I understand what Lincoln did, for a unified country; well if some day one powerful man wants to unify the whole world, i am fighting for him, even his is dictator!
Eric Louclair (1 month ago)
Well, law or constitution is guaranteed by armed forces! Not blank paper!

Lincoln is a hero. He was also an attorney and a good one. This lady would not qualify to bring him water. And she's wrong, besides.
nora22000 (1 month ago)
+Konrad Ford Do you have any sources for that?
Konrad Ford (1 month ago)
He was a failed attorney.

The Southern planters were disloyal to the government that gave them all they had. They fired on Ft Sumter. That was far more horrible than suspending habeas corpus as being fired at is worse than being arrested. It's like police shooting at suspcts and killing them instead of arresting them. Their rights are completely violated, because they themselves are dead. Just like the 660,000 soldiers violated and killed because the Southerners shot at people to get what they wanted. So if you wanted Lincoln to leave the law alone, why didn't you ask the insurrectionists to leave their guns at home?

+Konrad Ford Lincoln was racist until he issued that Emancipation Proclamation and saw so many slaves free themselves, especially the 200,000 Colored Troops who only got three months' training but kicked confederate ass back to their plantations for the final two years of the war. Lincoln and the. US Congress learned to see blacks as just as good as whites. Maybe you could learn, too, and quit defending the racist, slavemongering confederates.

+Konrad Ford They got thier asses handed to them, they were soundly whipped and lost their slaves. I don't think they will try secession again. But if they do, they will be whipped and the leaders will be jailed for life or executed next time, so that they don't get a chance to be so ungrateful as the confederates and their sympathizers.

+nora22000 Incorrect again, grant and other northerners still owned slaves. The emancipation proclamation did not free a single slave and neither did it in the North. The North did not embark on some noble mission to free slaves out of the goodness of their hearts. They were seen as subhuman, Lincoln himself thought they were. The slavery issue was nothing more than a political weapon in his arsenal to keep the states on the union by force so he could be a dictator while the war was going on. He wasn't he originally going to touch the issue. Thaddeus Stevens was the one that truly drove the issue and Lincoln had to do it kicking and screaming until it was politically expedient to do so. And don't sit there trying to make the North noble. They heavily taxed slavery to fund their projects that only benefited the North, they certainly had no problem making money of it. Same North that continued to use child labor well into the 20 century, same North that continued to use the courts to chip away what powers the states in the federal govt union had to run their affairs not spelled out specifically by the consitution. Shit, the federal goverment doesn't even print it's own currency, a right it has, a private bank called the "federal reserve" does. The union interferes not just in the south but all states. And secondly, don't sit there and act like every where else is so advanced. The South is not Mogadishu nor are the states on the north the bastion og knowledge and advancement. Your ignorance and bigotry to people who merely live in the south if hypocritical. Go suck on your govt goodies. Also it was family first, then states. Life was hard work back then. How dare you shit on people carrying out their duties to take care of their own. Lincoln deserved to be shot.

+nora22000 incorrect again. The Confederate military WAS the US military in the south! They seceded. That was their organization assets, NOT the Union's.

+Konrad Ford You walk up to any US Fort, Post Office or other installation and tell 'em you pay taxes and you're taking over. They will squash ypu like a bug. It will take less time than it took to rein in the confederates, but just the same as they said to them they will say you started it and that you were asking to be put down and they'd be right. The rebel flag and it's "I do as I damn well please, right or wrong" attitude is why the South is still a backwater of poverty and ignorance, because what you please follows planter, rebel values and is not good for you. Even if the rebels had paid every dime of federal taxes they were unsophisticated, rural planters unable to lead an industrial economy and were also not fit to rule their own agrarian countrymen because they were too greedy and stingy to take care of anyone but themselves. If they felt taken advantage of, then they should have invested some money in Northern industries instead of getting all hostile about it. There were Northerners who owned both plantations and slaves that sold both as soon as the war started because they were Americans FIRST. They were not overcommitted to money or slavery.

The suspension clause of article 1 section 9 of the constitution clearly states that the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended unless in times of rebellion and/or invasion where the public safety may require it
nora22000 (1 month ago)
Andrew Donnelly There was a war on. Lincoln did so much better thsn anyone else could have done. I would have put a bounty on all the ringleaders' heads and kept them in prison for life or hanged them for treason. No confederacy. And freed the slaves, sent them to the territories. Cut up the plantations and gave the land to the poor whites. Done. No more Southern angry fight culture. No more problem.

+Konrad Ford No pact was ever mentioned. The Union was permanent and forfeiture of sovereignty agreed. They wrote it down and ratified it, then fought a war over it. The state sovereignty side lost.
Konrad Ford (1 month ago)
The union was voluntarily crated as a pact, not a suspension of state sovereignty. The federal government has morphed into a behemoth which threatens and bends the wills of states at a whim.

Wasn't the confederates' secession a rebellion?
Kurt Sherrick (7 months ago)
Lincoln imprisoned much of the Maryland Legislature to keep them from voting to Secede. Lincoln flooded the state with Federal Troop's. He was a tyrant and that's why Booth shot his sorry ass. Sic Semper Tyrannis( Ever thus to tyrants. Booth did what Brutus did to Juluis Ceasar. Killed a tyrant and it caused their second civil war. First was Julius against Pompey. Julius did the same thing Lincoln did. Attacking his own Countryman. Joshua Chamberlain( one yankee I have a lot of respect for) quoted the same Speech that Julius gave to his troops before they crossed the Rubicon to war against their own countryman. Burnside crossed the Rappahannock into Fredericksburg VA. Chamberlain quoted Julius waiting to lead his men across the river. It was in Gods and Generals. There were more troops at Fredericksburg than any other battle during the war. Chamberlain lost 700 of his 1,000 men running up Maryes Heights. The Confederates mowed down about 15 charges. They were almost outnumbered 3 to 1. Lee made the same mistake charging over two miles of open ground although they did reach the Union line but they didn't have enough men left to push the Union of off three hills. The Union didn't have one soldier get closer than 50 yards of the stone wall. If not for Richard Kirlkland the Confederate Soldier who jumped the wall with canteens of water to give to the Union wounded and dying the next morning Burnside would have attacked again. After thousands watched this Confederate for a few hours giving water to his enemy and under fire until the Union sharpshooters realized he wasn't robbing the dead but giving water Burnside changed his mind. That impact of valor saved thousands of lives until the next battle. Maybe if Kirlkland didn't do that the war may have been over. There should have been a treaty after Fredericksburg. Damn Lincoln! He is responsible for over 750,000 Americans deaths. We lost the best on both sides.

Kurt Sherrick Lincoln wanted to save the Union. He did a good job. He was a kind man. I would have hanged 'em all and gave their plantations to the poor whites.
Green Man (1 year ago)
Lincoln "convinced" Maryland to stay in the Union?  Federal troops and cannon kept Maryland in the Union by FORCE!
nora22000 (3 months ago)
Green Man It was better than what happened in the South though. He convinced the confederates to come back too but it took a little longer.
Brian Blair (1 year ago)
