The UUID for my Windows boot partition wouldn’t show up with the command you provided, so I had to look up a different command to list UUID’s. Otherwise, this guide worked perfectly!! Thank you!!!

Glad to be of help. Could you please share the command that you used?

how can I edit grub so that windows OS is the default first option?
deatylipingu (1 year ago)
it worked. thanks
Nehal J Wani (1 year ago)
To be honest, I haven't tried this with oracle Linux, but it should mostly be the same procedure. Try it out in a VM and let me know if it works for you? :-)

Worked as written for windows server 2016 r2 and redhat 7.3. My user had a windows 2016 system in place and then wanted linux. Since it only had a single raid 0 disk in place, the only optino was to shrink the windows partition, then perform all the changes in this document... rebuild grub and it worked! Thanks for saving me time and headaches... Note: when i chose the new partitions i created a simple partition on the windows side, unformatted and no drive letter as the linux installer didn't see it without this. In the installer there is an option top format the new partition which i did for the boot using ext4. thats the only difference I think in how i completed this versus the video.

1: Are you sure you are following the right video? If Windows is installed in Legacy Mode, only then follow this video. Otherwise, follow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAFwX3P6CJY 2: :wq works after pressing escape inside vim.

Hahaha.. It's fine. I'm happy with this. Tons of thanks buddy. :-)
Nehal J Wani (3 years ago)
+Ashish Chavan There is a complicated way to do that. But I'd say pressing F9 is simpler :) You may wanna fiddle with the command efibootmgr in RHEL

Deepanshu Agrawal (4 years ago)
Hi Nehal Thank you for this video I have seen this video and completed all steps and windows 8.1 worked properly but There is a problem when we free space from any partition then this will goes to GRUB Rescue mode.I think grub file is corrupted. Is there any permanent solution for this or Please tell commands for rescuing from GRUB. Thank You.
Nehal J Wani (3 years ago)
+Deepanshu Agrawal You can't exit from rescue prompt and just continue. You need to reconfigure grub. Read http://unix.stackexchange.com/a/148042/24475
Deepanshu Agrawal (3 years ago)
+Nehal J Wani I haven't played with linux partition but formatting a unallocated space gives me this rescue prompt. Please tell me how to exit from rescue prompt.
Nehal J Wani (3 years ago)
+Deepanshu Agrawal It depends on which partitions you perform these operations. If you move a partition, or shrink it, or something else, you mess up with the GRUB configuration, because it doesn't match and hence give you a rescue prompt.
Deepanshu Agrawal (3 years ago)
+Nehal J Wani its not compulsary on deleting partitions but on every operation of partition it enters into grub rescue mode.
Nehal J Wani (3 years ago)
+Deepanshu Agrawal Why do you keep deleting partitions?
Vivek Reddy (4 years ago)
Thanks for the clear explanation.
Vivek Reddy (4 years ago)
+Nehal J Wani Alienware m15x
Nehal J Wani (4 years ago)
+Nehal J Wani BTW, what is the make/model of the computer you are using?
Nehal J Wani (4 years ago)
+Vivek Reddy To remove that error, just remove the line containing the term "makeactive" from 41_custom
Vivek Reddy (4 years ago)
+Nehal J Wani Yeah!! Its working. Thanks a lot. You are Genius. But I am getting error: command makeactive not found. But its not a big deal. I am able to run MAC.
Nehal J Wani (4 years ago)
+Vivek Reddy Okay, try this: cat <<EOF menuentry "Mac OS X" {      set root='hd0,msdos8'      makeactive      chainloader +1 } EOF Replace 8 with whatever is appropriate.
