Stephen holds Minister to account on cuts to Youth Services

01:06
On Monday, Stephen Timms asked Home Office Minister Victoria Atkins to acknowledge the problems caused by drastic cuts in youth service funding since 2010. During the exchange, Stephen pointed out that the London Borough of Newham has recently appointed 30 additional youth workers to deal with the problems associated with this shortfall. In her response, Victoria Atkins thanked Stephen for the work he has done in promoting youth services. Speaking after the exchange, Stephen said: 'The Minister's response was full of warm words, but it failed to recognise the damage done by cuts to youth services over recent years. These cuts have been devastating to the fabric of our local communities and I call on the Government to reverse them without delay'. The discussion came as part of an Urgent Question on Violent Crime tabled by Jim Fitzpatrick MP.

The project stimulated and encouraged the cooperation, exchange of experience, skills and good practices between the participants and their youth organizations. The project took place in the city of Gabrovo, for a period of 9 days, in October 2016. It consisted of 34 participants from Bulgaria, The Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, Poland and Croatia. The main aim of the project was to show the participants how Internet and the social media can be used as a way for encouraging the active European citizenship and entrepreneurship amongst young people. The participants in the exchange learned how the social network services can be used for organization of activities, events, groups, discussions and promotion of particular matters and opinions in the area of youth work.
The project K E Y – Knowledge Exchange about Youth Participation

02:29
The project K E Y – Knowledge Exchange about Youth Participation was first project of EUNET Working Group: Active participation of Youth – Exchange among organisations that was supported by Erasmus+ programme. Goal of the working group is to enhance cooperation among member organizations of EUNET and contribute to further development of our everyday work (especially with young people) thanks to the exchanges of good practice among member organizations. Highlight of the project “KEY – Knowledge Exchange about Youth Participation” was seminar that took place from June 24th to July 1st 2016 in Cologne. Project KEY was focused on the exchange of knowledge, experience, and know-how in the field of non-formal and informal civic education of the youth. Main organiser and coordinator of the project was Czech NGO EUTIS, o.p.s. (www.eutis.cz), project partners were other EUNET members – Karl-Arnold-Stiftung e.V. (Germany) and Centrum pre európsku politiku (Slovakia). Twelve experienced and younger professionals from all three organisations participated in study visit to Karl-Arnold-Stifung e.V. Programme included various activities – presentation of partner organisations and forms of civic education in Germany (more specifically North Rhine-Westphalia), the Czech Republic and Slovakia and role of our three organisations in civic education. Participants spent two days with German high school students from Erftgymnasium Berghaim. First day they took part in a simulation game “Destination Europe” organised by Karl-Arnold-Stiftung e.V. at school. For second day was planned study trip to Brussels, where participants visited European Parliament and Parlamentarium and they have discussed various issues with German MEP Herbert Reul. We had time as well for sightseeing of Cologne and learning more about its rich multicultural history. Thanks to the experiences of German partner that is involved in education of asylum seekers coming to Germany, participants from the Czech Republic and Slovakia had unique opportunity to get more information about real situation in Germany in the field of migration. According to German colleagues we need to face refugee crisis as a challenge that Europe can cope with, but for now they still miss solidarity from other members of the European Union. Therefore it was important to talk about this topic and to explain different positions of our countries together with different historical context. Thanks to this project participants gained new experiences, skills and methods of youth work (they already tried some of them during seminar). Seminar has as well contributed to improvement of current and future projects of all involved organisations thanks to the possibility to use simulation game “Destination Europe” for activities with Czech and Slovak participants.

MMRTI Culture and Media Exchange: Ethiopia and U.S Youth

03:59
Multimedia Resource and Training Institute (MMRTI ) is a non-profit and non-political institute founded by a group of professionals, technologists, educators, parents, and youth in the Greater Seattle Area to prepare the under served immigrant youth in the community for success in multimedia technology locally, regionally, and globally. MMRTI has an exciting opportunity this summer for young people who are born and group up in the United States. For the month of July, we will be traveling with MMRTI to several Ethiopian cities to teach media production, media ethics, and media literacy to about 100 Ethiopian young people. The trip will be a cultural exchange, where we teach about tolerance, integrity, diversity, as well as creating well balanced, factual stories. In exchange, we will learn about Ethiopian culture and values. The Ethiopian youth will learn some American values, such as the importance of: • Creativity, through their media production • Diversity and tolerance, by working with others who are not like them • Volunteering, by creating media for social good • Entrepreneurship, by publishing and promoting their work The American youth will learn some Ethiopian values, such as the importance of: • Community, by seeing how Ethiopians work together and value each other • Culture, language, and history, by being immersed in another country • Respect for elders, by seeing how Ethiopian youth treat their teachers and other adults in their community. The US Embassy American Spaces in Ethiopia is providing funding to cover costs in Ethiopia, as well as providing computer labs for the classes in their centers called American Corners. But we still need to raise money to cover travel and other costs, including bringing some equipment for the Ethiopian students. We will be taking 8 to 10 students and staff and traveling to four locations: Col. John Robinson American center in Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar American Corner, Jimma American Corner and Gondar media and resource center. We hope that you will help us with our efforts to strengthen the connections between Ethiopia and the US. Please help us make this trip possible. Youth Exchange - Apply for a job (Murter, Croatia)

06:28
"Apply for a Job" was a project with one main aim - to increase youth employability, to stimulate the mobility of youth and their active participation in society through helping them to understand how they are going to create businesses in a sustainable way, through helping them learn how to design a competitive CV, write a good motivation letter, prepare for a job interview etc. Our objective was to encourage development of "summarized" skills and behaviors among young people and help them in face the world of employers. 40 youngsters from six EU member states (Croatia, Spain, Greece, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria) and two non-EU member states (Serbia & FYR Macedonia) have worked together for 9 days in Murter on the Youth exchange "Apply for a Job" on a common European problem we all face nowadays -- unemployment. They learnt how to write successful CV, prosperous motivation letter, how to be appropriate dressed and prepared for job interview etc. During the Exchange participants visited regional info center "Info zona" in Split where they had workshop "Organized Youth Information Work in Croatia" through which they acquired basic knowledge and skills from field of youth work which now they can implement in their own communities. Through implementing team-building games, simulation exercises, competitions, presentations, open discussions, facts and figures, outdoor activities and creative work this project succeeded to motivate youngsters to be active and to understand their role in today society. A combination of educative and creative artistic workshops resulted in performing flash mob in the center of Murter that spoke about employment problem. Final results of the exchange was brochure designed by participants themselves -- a tool for others that will learn also important tips on how to face employers. The exchange was filmed and short movie dedicated to the youth unemployment was published and delivered to all promoters and others interested in the topic. Whole project and especially project activities have gathered group dependent knowledge and raised it; and became a platform for a further cooperation in a youth field.

"Erasmus+ is the European Commission's Programme for education, training, youth and sport for the period 2014–2020. As an integrated programme, Erasmus+ offers more opportunities for mobility of learners and staff and cooperation across the education, training and youth sectors and is easier to access than its predecessors, with simplified funding rules and a structure which aims to streamline the administration of the programme. The Programme is open to students, apprentices, teachers, lecturers, young people, volunteers, youth workers and people working in grassroots' sport. Approximately two-thirds of the budget is allocated to learning opportunities abroad for individuals, within the EU and beyond; the remainder will support partnerships between educational institutions, youth organisations, businesses, local and regional authorities and NGOs, as well as reforms to modernise education, training and youth systems."
