Sverker Johansson: Writing Wikipedia articles by the million

01:05:17
Writing Wikipedia articles by the million A project for creating Wikipedia articles for all living species in several different languages is currently in progress. The project uses bot software to read biological databases and convert database entries to human-readable articles about each species. To date, about three million articles have been created in three different languages, and several more languages are in the pipeline. I will present my experiences in managing this project, as well as reflections on what can and cannot be done with bot software, and what should and should not be done. Bot writing and manual writing are complementary tools, that both have a place in making the sum of all human knowledge accessible to every single person. Describe yourself using a Wikipedia article

00:04
Wikipedia is the closest thing we have to a public internet. It contains multitudes, from medicine to mollusks to Mariah Carey, and it answers our questions whenever we need it. Today, most Wikipedia articles are in languages other than English—87% to be exact. From Abkhaz to Zulu, along with 281 more. We strongly believe that language should not be a barrier to good information, and that knowledge should be available to all people in the language of their choice. So tell us, which of the approximately 45 million[1] Wiki articles describes you the best? [1] https://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/TablesArticlesTotal.htm And please help us ensure that every single person in the world has access to free, reliable knowledge. How to make an author Wikipedia page for your books or writing (that gets approved quickly)

18:52
I made this video to share what I've learned after making my first wikipedia page. The code takes a little while to get used to but is actually pretty simple with their text editor. You should prepare before hand and write your unbiased article (which shouldn't be about yourself or your business - so get someone else to post it). You'll also need a lot of links to media references that show you or your subject is "notable" enough to be on Wikipedia. If you're a writer, this could included interviews, awards you've one, professional organizations, events you've been involved in, universities or writing classes you attended, etc.

Wikipedia classroom experiment

00:30
Full Title: Wikipedia classroom experiment: bidirectional benefits of students' engagement in online production communities Authors: Rosta Farzan, Robert E. Kraut Abstract: Over the last decade, a citizen science movement has tried to engage students, laymen and other non-scientists in the production of science. However, there has been less attention in citizen science projects to use the public to disseminate scientific knowledge. Wikipedia provides a platform to study engagement of citizen scientists in knowledge dissemination. College and university students are especially appropriate members of the public to write science articles, because of the course-work and mentorship they receive from faculty. This paper describes a project to support students' writing of scientific articles in Wikipedia. In collaboration with a scientific association, we involved 640 students from 36 courses in editing scientific articles on Wikipedia. This paper provides details in the design of the program and our quantitative and qualitative approaches to evaluating it. Our results show that the Wikipedia classroom experiment benefits both the Wikipedia community and students. Undergraduate and graduate students substantially improved the scientific content of over 800 articles, at a level of quality indistinguishable from content written by PhD experts. Both students and faculty endorsed the motivational benefits of an authentic writing experience that would be read by thousands of people.
