Creating a content marketing strategy can be an incredibly difficult process, especially if you’re unsure of you you’re targeting, or what you’re trying to achieve. An effective content strategy is an invaluable resource, helping to structure and drive your content campaign. In this video, James explains everything you need to know about creating a winning content marketing strategy, and how you can go about putting together a plan that works for your business. Target Audience Firstly, James explains the importance of understanding your target audience. Whilst there are countless methods of targeting the right audience, a few highlights James includes are creating buyer personas and utilising data from Google Analytics. You can use tools like YouGov Profiler: https://yougov.co.uk/profiler#/ to gain a clearer view of your audience’s interests, likes and habits, and apply this information to different stages throughout your buying cycle. You can also pull audience reports from Google Analytics, which provide valuable key demographic data, including location and the sites your audience are also visiting. Building Goals Now you understand who it is you’re going to be aiming your content towards, you can formulate worthwhile goals and objectives for your content marketing campaign. These goals will vary depending on your own business values and marketing plans, as well who you’re trying to reach with your work. Your content marketing goals could be targeted towards gaining more followers, increasing traffic, boosting social shares or driving conversions; it will all depend on your business’ needs. Whichever goal you select, you’ll then need to formulate objectives to help you achieve them. You goal is what you’re aiming for; your objective is how you’ll get there. Social Media James also explains the importance of establishing social profiles on popular social media platforms, in order to further build your brand, and boost your content promotion efforts. By engaging with key users and influencers on social and sites such as these, you can begin to build a loyal group of followers with an active interest in your brand. As part of this, you’ll also want to carry out a competitor content analysis on three or four of your key competitors, in order to get a better idea of what your competition are doing to gain traction. SEO For Beginners: 3 Powerful SEO Tips to Rank #1 on Google in 2019 Are you new to SEO and want to rank #1 on google this upcoming year? Here are 3 SEO strategies that will boost your rankings! #1: Focus on content Google has this update called Hummingbird, and with Hummingbird, websites who just have content on everything won't do as well as sites which focus on one single niche and are super thorough. You want to be VERY thorough with your SEO content. Poke holes in your content and fill them all up, so then that way people are like, "This is the end all site "that you should end up reading "if you're interested in dating online." #2: Optimize your title tag and your meta description Have you ever done a Google search, and noticed that every time you do it, there is this link at the top, and then there's this one sentence with a link at the top is called the title tag. And the description below is called the meta description. Now think of it this way, if you search for the phrase online dating, and you don't see the word online dating in neither the title or the description, are you going to click on the result? Well if you are, there's something wrong, because why would you click on a result that isn't related to what you're looking for? In addition to that, have you ever searched for a term like online dating? And have you ever noticed that the word isn't in the title or description? That's because Google tracks who's clicking on what listing, and they've learned that when a keyword is in the listing, that same keyword that you're searching for, they know you're way more likely to click through. So in your title tag and your meta description, make sure you include the keyword. But you can't just add the keyword, "online dating," right? The easiest way and what I would do and I wish it was this simple; I will just put "online dating, online dating, online dating, online dating." If I could put it 20 times so people would know that the article is on online dating, I wish I would get more clicks. But it's not that simple. Yes you have to include the keyword in your title and your description, but it has to be appealing. If it doesn't flow in a sentence, it's not easy to read, and it's not appealing or evoking curiosity, no one is gonna click through. #3: Use Google Search Console Did you know that Google gives you a tool that teaches you how to rank number one on Google? Yes I know that sounds ridiculous but it is true, and it's called Google Search Console. If you're not already a user of it, sign up. It doesn't cost a dollar. You're missing out if you're not using it. I can't emphasize that enough. So now that you're using Google Search Console...give it a few days because it takes some time to populate data. You'll see a screen that shows Search Analytics and this shows you all the pages on your website that are getting you traffic. But the cool thing about Google Search Console is they also show you which articles are getting impressions. Take all the keywords you're getting impressions for and start adding them to your copy. Now we have an article on Instagram, and it teaches you how to get over 300 targeted Instagram followers per day. The article is around 10,000 words. When I first wrote that article, it wasn't 10,000 words, it was roughly 2,500. I went to Google Search Console, I saw all the people that are searching for terms related to the article, I added them within that article. I made it more thorough and you know what? My SEO traffic more than tripled to that article. Yes it is that simple. And when I made that change, it didn't happen right away, but I noticed the results within 50 days. That's not a long time. Now that you've learned these three tips, I challenge you in which I want you to take these tactics and implement them, and then after you implement them, in the next 45 days I want you to leave a comment with your results. One of them is what you already have (the “about us” page, or your “mission statement”). The other bucket is – what people want. They want what they’re searching for. So again – what is content marketing? It’s creating valuable, relevant, and consistent content in order to attract a specific audience. ------- How To “Do” Content Marketing? 1.Have a content platform Now that you know what it is, how do you actually “do” content marketing? It starts by having a platform. You need a content management system – think WordPress, Drupal. 2.Create regular content You have your platform, and now it’s time to start playing the game. Think about your audience. What do they need? What do they fear? Find the value that they’re looking for that helps them, informs them, or in some way improves what they’re already doing. 3.Create “evergreen” content Think of an evergreen tree. It’s green all year, it doesn’t shed, but at certain times of the year, like during Christmas, thousands of people are looking for evergreen trees to put in their homes. Think about content that could be relevant year-round, but also have episodic spikes of interest throughout the year. That’s the type of content that will produce the most value. 4.Have “hooks” to build an audience you can talk to As a nonprofit – you’re probably giving away free content, and free things all the time. Well, you will lose money if you continue to do that. This is why you need a “hook”. In other words – “why would somebody give you their information?” For this example, let’s think about an e-mail. If you get the person’s e-mail, and that permission to talk to them, the next time you put out free content you can reach out to them. You can also contact them the next time you do a fundraiser, or when looking for volunteers, etc. That’s how you build your audience. This is the most valuable asset that your organization will have. 5.Content distribution You created all this amazing content, now how do you get it out there? There are two simple ways. One is SEO – Search Engine Optimization. You have to build your site using the right keywords, and put it where people can find it. The other way to distribute your content is through SMO – Social Media Optimization. You can talk to anybody you want on social media. Create relationships. Perhaps you’ve written an article that highlights a different organization, or a product? Let them know! At some point they might feature your organization on their site. That’s the cycle you want to create. ------- You Must Measure It! This is the most important. How will you know if what you’re doing, is right? Look at your Google Analytics, and check what the data say. Then – adjust based on the results. Look for how people are searching for your types of content, and mimic what’s out there.
