People who use these techniques routinely are the highest achievers in all walks of life, from business to sport to public service. Managing time well enables you to be in control of your life; it allows you to act on situations rather than react to situations. When reacting to situations you are ill-prepared and under stress so your action is far from your optimum capacity. Whereas, when you act on situations it is well planned and thus allows you to function at your highest. At the heart of time management is an important shift in focus: Concentrate on results, not on being busy. This is a one of the most important time management skills. Many people spend their days in a frenzy of activity, but achieve very little because they are not concentrating on the right things.

What are they going to do? And what will people say when they are discovered in there? I have a feeling we're about to find out… Denise Goodness, what's that? Anna is that you? And is that you Tom? Anna Yes, help! We're locked in. Denise Don't panic, I've got the key. There. How on earth… Tom …it's not how it looks Denise. We were just… erm… Anna …just looking for envelopes. Denise Really?! Anna Yes, yes, really. The door slammed shut and locked from the inside when Tom walked in. Tom Yeah, she's right. Just walked in, and shut the door and bang. Denise Hmm. Let's just keep it our little secret shall we. (Aside to Anna) I thought you had better taste Anna! Paul Ah there you are Anna, I need a word with you… Oh, you look like you've been caught doing something you shouldn't! Ha ha. Anna …but I haven't. Paul Just joking Anna. Now could you step in to my office, we need to touch base about the European marketing strategy. Anna Are we playing baseball?! Narrator No Anna! Touch base. He wants to catch up with you, probably to see how you're getting on. Go on Anna, let's see what he has to say. Anna Oh I see. That door doesn't lock does it? Paul No, I don't think so. Right Anna. Biscuit? These new peanut ones are quite nice. So how are things with the project? Anna Well, I've done some cold calling and have an order from a company in France. Paul I see. Very impressive but have they signed on the dotted line yet? Anna The dotted line? Paul Have they actually signed the contract yet? Anna Well, no, but… Paul …that's the problem. There's a rival company who's also targeting the European market called Tutti Fruity - and they'll do anything to steal our customers. Anna Oh I see. Paul So, to keep our head above water, we need a clear strategy… and that's why I've put you in charge. So what shall we do? Narrator I've a feeling Paul hasn't a clue – that's why he wants you to come up with the ideas. Anna I think you're right – but I don't know what to say. Narrator Tell him we need to price the rivals out of the market, that means offer the lowest prices so nobody wants to buy plastic fruit from our rivals. You could say that we need to corner the market, that means Tip Top Trading dominates the plastic fruit market. Anna Oh, thanks. That's very useful. Paul So Anna, any thoughts? Anna Lots Paul. I think we've got to compete on price. Paul Oh yes? Anna We need to price Tutti Fruity out of the market. We need to corner the market so that everyone knows we are the best choice for good quality, good value plastic fruit. Paul I like it! Anna And… and… Narrator Tell him we need to build good relationships with our customers – that means we give them good service. Anna …we need to build good relationships with our customers. Talk to them regularly, send them gifts… go and meet them face to face. Paul Face to face? Yes, great idea – just what I was thinking. If we follow this strategy I reckon there could be a bonus for us all by Christmas. Narrator Well done Anna. Very convincing. If you can put your ideas into practice you'll save the company. Let's remind ourselves of the words you used to create the European marketing strategy… We've got to compete on price. We need to price the rivals out of the market. We need to corner the market. We need to build good relationships with our customers. Narrator Well, things seem to be going well for Anna… or are they? Denise Anna! Anna! That man from France has called again and left a message. He's not happy this time. Something about us trying to rip them off! Anna What? Rip them off? Denise It means over charging them or giving them poor quality goods. Anna That's not fair. I'm going to have to sort this out. Narrator That's it Anna – go and build a good relationship with your customer! Bye for now.

In this series you will learn how to take general English and upgrade it to business English. Okay? And we'll be doing that by looking at different verbs that you can use, adjectives, nouns, and so on. Okay? But today in this lesson we will be focusing on eight verbs. But you might be asking: "Only eight verbs and I can become a manager?" Well, yes. "Why?" Because I'm going to show you how these eight verbs, to start with, can actually be used in hundreds of ways, in different collocations or combinations of words, so therefore you'll be able to use them in all kinds of situations. Definitely in professional situations, but also in social situations or personal situations. Okay? So, let's start right now. Okay. So let's suppose what you want to say in general English or regular English is something like this: "I need to find out what's wrong." Okay? Now, on this side is all the regular English or the general English. Okay? And on this side we're going to express the same idea, but in higher English, in more advanced business English or more professional English. And you're going to help me because I didn't write the word in yet. You're going to help me because perhaps you already know some of these words, but even if you know them you might not realize how many different ways we can actually use those same words, and that's what I want you to be able to do. Okay? So suppose your idea in your mind is that: "I need to find out what's wrong." So how can we say that in more professional English? "I need to", the verb starts with "i": "I need to _______ the problem. I need to identify the problem." Okay? So, our first word today is "identify". Say it after me: "identify the problem". Good. Now, suppose the idea you're trying to convey is: "I need to fix the problem." Okay? "Fix" is a very ordinary word, so what better word could we use here? "I need to _______ the issue or the issues. I need to", you might know this word. "I need to resolve", okay? So, "resolve" is just like "solve", but usually we say: "Solve the problem", but we might say: "Resolve the issue". And "resolve" is an even higher, more advanced word. And the higher vocabulary that you use, the more professional you will sound. Okay? And that's what our goal is. Right? Okay, next: "I need to give people confidence." So what's a good word or verb for that? "To give somebody confidence" is to, something starts with "m": "I need to _______ my employees. I need to..." Do you know this word? I'm sure you've heard it. "Motivate". Okay? Say it after me: "Motivate" or "motivate". You can say the "t"; sometimes it's easier and clearer for people to understand you when you say the "t". So let's say the "t" now: "Motivate. I need to motivate my employees" or: "I need to motivate my employees." Okay? Instead of saying: "I need to give people confidence", because you see that all the verbs here are very ordinary, everyday verbs, and those are higher-level verbs. Next: "I need to give clients my attention." Again, we have a very weak verb here, so how can you say that: "I need to give my attention to my clients or give clients my attention"? The word... The verb starts with "f": "I need to _______ on our clients." What's the verb? Do you know it? "I need to focus", okay? Say it after me: "Focus". Be careful how you pronounce this word because otherwise it can sound improper. All right? "I need to focus on our clients." Sounds a lot better than saying: "I need to give my attention to my clients." Okay? "I need to focus". Next: "I need to spend as little as possible". "Spend as little" means spend as little money. So what's one word that captures that idea, to spend as little as possible? It starts with "m": "I need to _______ our expenses or our costs." Do you know what it is? Okay? So the word is "minimize". These small vocabulary changes will make a huge difference in your English level. Today, you're going to learn how to speak more professionally in business situations. Now, at times, it's all right to use informal language. It's acceptable in everyday situations. But there are times when you'll want to create a more powerful impression. And at that time, you'll want to be able to use business English. What's the difference between general English and business English? Well, sometimes, there's not very much difference. Sometimes, general English is used in business contexts. But sometimes, you use a higher-level word. And that's what I'm going to teach you in this lesson. Let's look at some really easy, common examples. For example, if you say -- or if you want to say, "I got your email", in regular English, you might just say, "I got your email." What would you say if you want to make it business English? You would say -- I'm giving you a clue. The word starts with R. Instead of saying, "I got your email"; "I received your email." Okay? Now, it becomes more formal and more business-like. Suppose you want to tell someone, "I need your help" or, "I need some help." What word could you use that starts with R instead of "need"? "Require." So instead of saying -- and you can also change more than the verb. The verb is the key, but you could say -- instead of saying, "I need some help", you could say, "I require some assistance." Now, you've changed two words, the verb and also a noun. Let's try another one. "Let's talk about it later." Which business word could you use? "Let's discuss -- let's discuss it later." That sounds much more professional than saying, "Let's talk about it later." Next one. "How do I get in touch with her?" What word could you use instead of that? "How do I contact her?" Okay? Good. "Please make sure you arrive on time." Which business word could you use instead of "make sure"? "Please ensure you arrive on time." "Please give her your travel plans." Instead of saying "give", you could say, "Please provide her with your itinerary." There, we've changed another word. Instead of saying "travel plan" or "travel plans", you could use the word "itinerary". An "itinerary" is usually a piece of paper or a document that lists your travel plans, when you're departing, when you're arriving, where, when, and so on. "Please let them know when you will be arriving." "Please let them know" -- instead of that, you could say, "Please inform them of your arrival." Okay? Good. "Please tell me why you've made this decision." "Please explain your decision." "Could you please talk some more about that subject?" "Could you please elaborate? Could you please elaborate on that." Now, this is actually a very useful word if you go to a conference or a meeting and you want someone to speak some more about a particular point or issue. It's a good, kind of, question to learn. "Could you please elaborate on that?" So "to elaborate" means to speak more or talk more, give more information. "How are you going to fix this problem?" Better than using the word "fix" is the word "solve". "How are you going to solve this problem?" All right? So try to do that for every simple word that you know and basic word that you know in general English, try to find a slightly more formal version, which will be your business English word. Are you in sales and find it difficult to manage your time? Are you usually putting out fires rather than finding new customers? It's essential to manage your time well in order to be successful in sales. When you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Time management will allow you to focus on the aspects of your job that drive revenue for your company, not to mention your own income. First, start with the big picture. Outline your goals for the entire year - both business goals and personal goals. Having a balance between your life and your work will create a more conducive environment for success. Write down things like the income you'd like to make, vacations you'd like to take, and time you'd like to spend with your family. Next, break it down into monthly, weekly, and daily goals. Some daily activities to consider are actions to work towards your account, revenue, and income goals like 30 minutes of planning, schedule prospecting, schedule sales time, schedule proposal writing, sending and responding to email, and schedule voicemail time. Ask for help from your sales manager or customer support team to put out fires so that you can focus on selling. When you succeed to plan, you plan to succeed. Example: It seems we’ve been playing some phone tag, so I hope you can call me back so we can figure this out. Piggyback: Means steal an idea or a thought and give no credit for. Example: I’d really like to piggyback on your marketing idea and propose the same in the meeting tomorrow. Per se: Means in itself or by itself. It is used when you want to refer to a particular thing on its own. Example: The song, per se, wasn't a bad choice; it was your singing voice that wasn’t so good. When you try to transfer a call to your colleague who is not answering, politely tell the caller that the concerned person is not taking calls now. Also, you could offer to take a message on behalf of your colleague. Example: Jonathon is out today. Can I forward you to his voicemail? If you know your colleague is not in the premises, offer to forward the caller to your colleague’s voice mail. Transferring/connecting the caller to another person: Example: Please hold while I connect you to him. This phrase is mainly used by front line staff. Be polite soft and gentle while speaking. Use voice modulation. Example: I’ll put you through Mr. Sevan’s phone. If you get disconnected for some reason, his direct extension is 4562. When you use such a phrase, you are being polite and going out of your way to help the caller. You are helping the caller with the extension number in case of any issues. Problems during a call: Example: I’m sorry I can’t hear you. At times, there may be a lot of disturbance and lack of clarity while speaking. If you are taking messages over the phone and are unable to hear clearly, do not hesitate to express it. But do it politely. Example: Could you please spell that for me? Many times you take a note of the caller’s name and may find it difficult to spell it correctly. You could ask the caller politely to spell it for you. Example: I am sorry you have the wrong number. At work, you may be answering plenty of calls who have the wrong number. However annoying this may be, do not snap. Be polite and let them know that they have the wrong number. Ending a call: Example: Thank you for calling North Star roofing. Have a nice day. Example: Thanks for calling, Mr. Fernandez. Is there anything else I can assist you with? Ending a call is as important as answering or starting one. It is imperative that you maintain the politeness while speaking. Let the caller know you were pleased to speak to him. Ensure you end the call in such a way that the caller never hesitates to call again.

You don't need negative people around you. 4. Do not wait for the perfect time - When you set your goals, you need to understand that there is no perfect time to start. Perfectionism is one of the biggest reasons for procrastination. One should re-clarify your goals. Often times we outgrow our goals so it is important for us to re-clarify it to ourselves. Also, share your goals with your friends and family workers so that the next time they meet they will ask about your accomplishments - this works as a reminder for you. It is a great way to keep yourself accountable to your plans. Hope these tips help you to overcome procrastination. While strategizing and planning helps - taking the action is within you. So just get a grip and do it. This will help you to stop procrastinating.

Plan something Rewarding at the end of your stressful day Rewards like taking a hot water bath or half an hour of reading a good book or even watching your favorite T.V show helps. So basically I am talking about some me time. Put aside work , housekeeping and family concerns for brief period before bed time. 5 tips To Make a Killer First Impression - personality Development & English lessons by Niharika Most people will judge you within the first few seconds of meeting you and their view will most likely never change. Making a good first impression is utmost important, because you only get one chance at it. It takes just a quick glance, maybe three seconds, for someone to evaluate you when you meet for the first time. In this short time, the other person forms an opinion about you based on your appearance, your body language, your attitude, your mannerisms, and how you are dressed. So, whether they are in your career or social life, it's important to know how to create a good first impression. This lesson by Niharika provides some useful tips to help you do this. 1. Set an intention. The most important thing to do for giving a good impression is to set your intention. This is especially important before any kind of big event where you would be meeting a lot of people — i.e. conferences, networking events or friend's parties. As you get ready or when you are driving over think about what kind of people you want to meet and what kind of interactions you want to have. This can be an incredibly grounding experience and works very well to focus on what kind of energy you want to have for your event. 2. Present Yourself Appropriately Of course physical appearance matters. The person you are meeting for the first time does not know you and your appearance is usually the first clue he or she has to go on. But it certainly does not mean you need to look like a model to create a strong and positive first impression. The key to a good impression is to present yourself appropriately. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and so the "picture" you first present says much about you to the person you are meeting. Is your appearance saying the right things to help create the right first impression? Start with the way you dress. What is the appropriate dress for the meeting or occasion? In a business setting, what is the appropriate business attire? Suit, blazer, casual? And ask yourself what the person you'll be meeting is likely to wear -- if your contact is in advertising or the music industry, a pinstripe business suit may not strike the right note! For business and social meetings, appropriate dress also varies between countries and cultures, so it's something that you should pay particular attention to when in an unfamiliar setting or country. Make sure you know the traditions and norms. And what about your grooming? Clean and tidy appearance is appropriate for most business and social occasions. A good haircut or shave. Clean and tidy clothes. Neat and tidy make up. Make sure your grooming is appropriate and helps make you feel "the part". Appropriate dressing and grooming help make a good first impression and also help you feel "the part", and so feel more calm and confident. Add all of this up and you are well on your way to creating a good first impression. 3. Be Open and Confident When it comes to making the first impression, body language as well as appearance speaks much louder than words. Use your body language to project appropriate confidence and self-assurance. Stand tall, smile (of course), make eye contact, greet with a firm handshake. All of this will help you project confidence and encourage both you and the other person to feel better at ease. Almost everyone gets a little nervous when meeting someone for the first time, which can lead to nervous habits or sweaty palms. By being aware of your nervous habits, you can try to keep them in check. And controlling a nervous jitter or a nervous laugh will give you confidence and help the other person feel at ease. 4. Be Courteous and Attentive It goes without saying that good manners and polite, attentive and courteous behavior help make a good first impression. In fact, anything less can ruin the one chance you have at making that first impression. So be on your best behavior! One modern manner worth mentioning is "turn off your mobile phone". What first impression will you create if you are already speaking to someone other than the person you are meeting for the first time? Your new acquaintance deserves 100% of your attention. Anything less and you'll create a less than good first impression. 5. Close on a good note. Keep them wanting more. Show that you had a really good time and would like to see them again. Maybe even text them saying so when you get home. People on a first date not only want to have a good time, but they want to know that you did as well. They want that reassurance. So, in this lesson, I'm going to give you some phrases that you can use in a job interview, and I'll also be giving you... We'll also be looking at what grammar you should be using to answer common job interview questions. So I'm going to break it down so you know what to expect when you have that job interview in English, maybe for the first time, or maybe you've already had a couple of interviews in English but you just want to improve your performance. So let's start by talking about before the interview. So when you get there, there's always, like, that bit of small talk. Maybe you find it awkward, maybe you're a pro at small talk, but I thought I'd just give you some phrases so that you've got something to say, at least. So, when you get there, it's polite to say something like: "Thanks for inviting me to interview." If you feel like initiating small talk, you could say something like: "Is the position based in this office?" or "building", wherever you are. You might also want to say: "Oh, how many people work here?" Just sort of general things, nothing personal going on there. Or you might make an observation about what you see about the building or the workplace. You could say: "The offices are impressive." Now, clearly, if the building isn't very nice, and there isn't anything remarkable about it, then I probably wouldn't say something like this. It's better to make no observation than say one that's not true, or one that sounds a bit strange because the place is a real dump. You don't want to say it's great in your phrase. But maybe the area's nice, so then you could say: "What a great location!" This is an exclamation. You say it with some kind of enthusiasm. Or you might say, as you're walking to the interview room: "Ah, I see you have an open plan office." That means where everybody works together in the same room. Or you might say: "I see you have a staff canteen." That's where you get your food. Okay? So, all suggestions for general small talk. The interviewer may, however, initiate small talk with you, in which case, general things they like to talk about in England... Our... Our favourite topics of small talk are the weather, so you could say something like: "It's chilly today." That means it's a bit cold. Or mild. "Mild" is... "Mild" is when the weather is better than you would expect for that time of year. So if it's winter and it's mild, it's not as cold as you would expect it to be. Yep. So we love to talk about the weather, you know that about British people. Did you also know we like to talk about the traffic or the tube delays and things like that? So, perhaps they'll say: "How was the traffic? How was your journey here?" You can tell them about your journey. Say: -"Oh, it wasn't bad." -"How was your journey?" -"Not bad." That means it was okay. Or you could say: "It didn't take me too long." It didn't take me too long. Now, just a tip: You don't want to say: "It was a nightmare; it took me hours", because they'll probably want to employ someone who can get to the job easily.
