Neighbors exchange produce from their gardens
Need basil for a recipe? No need to run to the store when you can get it from your neighbor’s backyard. That is the idea behind grower exchanges that are popping up in neighborhoods like one in Baton Rouge. LSU AgCenter correspondent Tobie Blanchard has the story.

A permaculture exchange - a permaculture tour for a song from the Ubuntu Choir, Uganda
The gift economy is a beautfiul thing! In exchange for a tour of our permaculture garden exploring useful and accessible technologies such as compost toilets, wastewater gardens, permaculture food gardens, the extraordinary Ubuntu Youth Choir from Uganda offered a beautiful song. What an honour to have such gorgeous sounds flowing through the landscape on the 30th anniversary of the start of Crystal Waters ecovillage. I think the gardens will grow strong after this. The Ubuntu Youth Choir (http://www.kwaya.org/UBUNTU2018TOUR.html) is an amazing initiative that gives young Ugandans opportunities for education and leadership. Take a look at their website and see how you can support Ugandan children directly through their programs. The Permaculture Education Institute (https://permacultureeducationinstitute.org) offers scholarships to women and young people in need around the world, particularly in Africa. Morag and her family will be travelling to Uganda and Kenya soon to help build capacity of local permaculture teachers.
Trump has testy exchange, insults female reporter
(1 Oct 2018) During a Rose Garden news conference called to highlight the revamped US-Canada-Mexico trade agreement, President Donald Trump insulted a female reporter for ABC News telling her that she "never" thinks even before she had a chance to ask her question. As ABC reporter Cecilia Vega, turned to pick up a microphone, Trump joked in front of an open microphone that she was "shocked that I picked her. Like in a state of shock." When she replied, "I'm not, thank you Mr. President, " the president appeared to  mishear her and responded, "that's OK, I know you're not thinking, you never do." Vega responded: "I'm sorry?"   Vega tried to ask a question about the FBI investigation of sexual assault allegations against Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, but the president initially insisted she ask about trade. He returned to Vega later in the news conference for a Kavanaugh question. My First Ever Plant Exchange
Today was the Wood County Plant Exchange in NW Ohio - I am so glad I clicked on the event featured on Facebook a few months ago because I got a reminder this morning about the event. I was running a little behind and really had no idea what to expect so I grabbed a couple of little plants I had in 3” containers ( catnip, stone crop and foxglove ) and headed up to the fair grounds. GET THAT composter here: https://brenhaas.com/recommends/hot-frog-living-composter/ When I got there I couldn’t believe all the people that were there… they even had volunteers out in the parking lot directing traffic for parking! FIND ME ON SOCIAL... http://www.twitter.com/brenhaas http://www.facebook.com/brenhaas I wish I would have known this event was this huge… I would have brought more plants. They even had a drive through area where you could drop off your plants at the door. Once The volunteers check to be sure your plants were market….. You get a bracelet so you know what group of ‘plant exchangers’ you are in. Everyone gets 3 plants and you get an additional plant for everyone you bring. What a great way to start a garden - for free! NOT TO MENTION you get to chat with other plant geeks from your area. There was a few musicians entertaining before the event began and local organizations had tables set up with local gardening information, handouts and even more free plants! https://www.facebook.com/WCPlantExchange/ I share more images on my website at : https://brenhaas.com/my-first-every-plant-swap/

Cold Garden (Canada Exchange 2012/2013)
Before I left for Calgary I set up a blog (coldgarden.tumblr.com) to document my travels in the snowy city. The blog (named after the argued Nordic origin of the name 'Calgary') became a place for me to upload various travel shots. However, whilst I was over there it seemed to get kind of neglected. So, as an ode to the blog I have named this video after it. Between September 2012 and April 2013, I studied at the University of Calgary but this video also features footage from Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. Once I'd finished at university I then went on to travel (via Vancouver) the United States. The latter half of the video shows what I got up to then. Without being too much of a sentimental git, I just want to share with you just how great of an experience this was. Not only was I fortunate enough to witness a variety of breathtakingly beautiful landscapes but I also met a fantastic bunch of people along the way so shout outs to them. Hope you enjoy the video. Watch it in high definition if you can. Song: Breakers by Local Natives I do not own or hold any rights to the music used. NO copyright infringement is intended! Seed Exchange
More info and links here: http://www.ecobold.com/seed-savers-exchange/ I came across Seed Savers Exchange at the Green Festival, they are perfect for anyone who has a garden or is thinking of having one. Here you can either exchange seeds that you have too many of or, if you don't have any to exchange, you can buy seeds from others! What a great idea. They started this non-profit organization about 35 years ago in order to help farmers grow and save seeds, so they started a group of people who would grow each others seeds as a back up system. The organization grew so much that they got into a point where they needed to keep the seeds in one place, so they started a seed bank and began releasing a catalog to support the seed exchange. Today they have over 13,000 members across the country and every year they release a new catalog with a listing of all varieties their members want to share with people. You can also find the list and buy seeds on their website. They have several kinds of seeds in their catalog, including vegetables, herbs and flowers. I also came across a very cool program they launched called "Sell seeds instead of candy bars!". Here's a quick intro to it: Seed Savers has developed a new fundraising program as a healthy, sustainable alternative to other school fundraising programs. Benefit your school, your students, and the gardening public. Give children seeds to sell and they will grow, too, in the process. Seeds to Grow is a project of Seed Savers Exchange that promotes heirloom gardening. A little story about them, from their site: Seed Savers Exchange is a non-profit organization that saves and shares the heirloom seeds of our garden heritage, forming a living legacy that can be passed down through generations. Our mission is to save North America's diverse, but endangered, garden heritage for future generations by building a network of people committed to collecting, conserving and sharing heirloom seeds and plants, while educating people about the value of genetic and cultural diversity. At the heart of Seed Savers Exchange are the dedicated members who have distributed hundreds of thousands of heirloom and open pollinated garden seeds since our founding 35 years ago. Those seeds now are widely used by seed companies, small farmers supplying local and regional markets, chefs and home gardeners and cooks, alike. Seed Savers Exchange was founded in 1975 by Diane Ott Whealy and Kent Whealy to honor this tradition of preserving and sharing. Their collection started when Diane's terminally-ill grandfather gave them the seeds of two garden plants, Grandpa Ott's morning glory and German Pink tomato. Grandpa Ott's parents brought the seeds from Bavaria when they immigrated to St. Lucas, Iowa in the 1870s. Today, the 890-acre Heritage Farm, near Decorah, Iowa, is our home. We maintain many thousands of heirloom garden varieties, most having been brought to North America by members' ancestors who emigrated from Europe, the Middle East, Asia and other parts of the world. Unlike Fort Knox, Heritage Farm is not surrounded by security fences and guards. Our perimeter is patrolled by bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, deer, raccoons and other wildlife. The farm is ringed by hiking trails that take visitors through majestic scenery, past our certified organic preservation gardens, historic orchard and ancient White Park Cattle. They even give tours of their farm. Way to go Seed Savers Exchange!
