#iitutor #English #CriticalThinking https://www.iitutor.com/ Feature articles are a forum for a writer to express their opinion using a fact-based argument geared toward a particular agenda. They use a different pattern than newspaper reports. The Writer The writer is as much a part of the article as its content. Many represent ‘larger-than-life’ people Personal Agenda Personal beliefs are very much a part of an article, with commentary as important as facts Language and Structure Feature articles are a free-flowing conversation, with use of figurative and emotional language. Big Bold Headline! A feature article usually starts with a very short sentence to get the reader’s interest and state the issue. However, this can vary. Argument begins here. Feature articles will interweave facts and/or statistics. Quotes are not quite as important. Usually directed toward a point. May have single line statements to hammer a point home. Continues on a powerful conclusion. No Formal Structure There is no formal structure, and sequencing is ordered by argument rather than events Provides Background Generally will discuss an issue with background and links to many sources and analogies Circular Usually finishes where it begins, and takes an argument full circle Conversational A feature article will address its audience, often directly referring to them as ‘you, we, us, our’ Like an essay, a feature article is directed towards constructing an argument using facts, evidence and discussion. Unlike an essay, however, it features a personal conversation between writer and the audience. While there is no formal structure, it uses specifics and evidence to justify its opinion. It works like a public debate. Feature articles usually have the following characteristics: Use figurative and speculative language Often use humour, analogies or puns Incorporate facts in argument Anecdotal and conversational Often speaks to audience – uses 2nd person syntax (“you”) Use emotional language Feature articles are personal arguments Use their own structure and style Address an audience directly

#iitutor #English #TextTypeStudies https://www.iitutor.com Writing about Newspaper Articles You can write about newspaper articles in a number of ways: and not just comprehension. To fully interpret the validity, effects and techniques of a news article, you need to ask some questions. How do they Grab Attention? An article can grab attention through a headline, an image, or both. The relationship between headline and image attracts a reader through by interest or emotional response. The first line of the article is important for maintaining this interest, or getting them to ‘click’. Are they Truly Objective? This bias can be seen in any way that a journalist adds personal opinion, be it political, social, cultural, religious or ideological. While many articles are completely objective and impersonal some do indicate bias or emotion. You must analyse what effect this bias has, if any, on the trustworthiness and validity of the article, and be critical. What Sources do they Use? A good test of the trustworthiness of a news article comes from the evidence or source that a news story uses. Some are generally trustworthy such as: Government spokesperson, police, professors, scientists, the subject of the article, photographic evidence Some are less than trustworthy, such as: Witnesses, ‘a source close to’, unrecognised ‘experts’, the subject of the article, ‘man on the street’ What Kind of Story is it? Not all news stories are the same. All stories connect and attract readers in different ways. They can be humorous, scandalous, sensational, fear-mongering, heart-warming or reflective. All stories want to connect with reader in some way, and through this, they appeal directly or indirectly to emotions and interests. How does it use Language? The final question you should ask is how techniques are used, such as: Exaggerated or sensationalist choices of language Emotional or figurative language Formal or colloquial style of language in reporting Puns or rhetorical questions in headline Any distinct layout or visual choices The file name must be E06103.flv

Are you afraid of alien invasions or giant meteors rushing toward Earth? Oh, forget about them! There’s something much more dangerous lurking in space, and it’s called "strange matter." While people don't know much about it, experts are sure that under particular conditions, this stuff would be able to eat our planet alive! Imagine a jar of honey that suddenly goes nuts and decides to consume everything around: the table, plates, your kitchen, you, the whole galaxy! That's exactly what may happen if the strange matter was left to roam on its own. But would there be a way to stop all this from happening? Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Imagine this: a super powerful and massive star is reaching the end of its life. If the star had been massive enough, it’ll produce a black hole. But if it wasn't that big, a neutron star will appear in its place. - Scientists say that one day these neutrons can get tired of holding all that weight, and the structure keeping the entire thing together will collapse. This leads to the appearance of a quark star. - The pressure inside a quark star is getting stronger. As a result, things called “strange quarks” can appear in its core. They’ve been dubbed “strange” because, well, they don’t behave like normal quarks. - But strange matter – oh, that's a bundle of chaos! Here’s where the “strange” part comes in. Its quarks have no boundaries – they just run totally amok wherever and however they want. - When two neutron stars collide or when a neutron star crashes into a black hole, these strangelets break free. Sadly, a strangelet wouldn't care whether the object it's encountered is a star or a planet full of life! - To get rid of strange matter, the only thing we could do is toss it into a black hole. But this escape plan raises all kinds of questions itself. - But as soon as you get to the black hole’s edge, aka the event horizon, you won't be able to turn back because it’s the point of no return. - Everything that approaches a black hole gets broken down into individual atoms. And we become long thin pasta. - At this point, strange matter is just a theory that hasn't been confirmed yet. Physicists have considered creating strange matter in a particle accelerator. Luckily, they later came to the conclusion that it's impossible to do since particle accelerators get so hot that they’d immediately melt any appearing strangelets. Have you heard about Game of Thrones? Of course, you have, even if you haven’t seen it. And have you ever wondered if the great ice wall from the show could exist in reality? If you’re interested, let’s find out together! In a 2017 interview, Professor Martin Truffer from the University of Alaska Fairbanks says that the main problem with ice is that it flows. Having studied the glaciers of Antarctica for many years, he knows that sheer walls of ice tend to crumble down under their own weight — and none of them are nearly as tall as the wall from Game of Thrones. But could such a wall stand in any other way? Other videos you might like: 7 Mystery Riddles Only the Smartest 5% Can Solve https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0zrRIN_T5E& The Great Pyramid Mystery Has Finally Been Solved https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sONLWHuYo7w& Who Lives at the Bottom of the Bermuda Triangle? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOHVIMUuOPk& TIMESTAMPS: What exactly the wall is 0:22 What about the laws of physics? 1:19 Could the wall stand in any other way? 1:46 Oh, this idea's rather plausible! 2:52 The show VS. the book 3:51 A simple way to make the wall last longer 4:12 #gameofthrones #whitewalkers Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - What exactly is the wall? Well, it’s an enormous structure standing in the North of the fictional continent of Westeros created by George R. R. Martin. It’s said to protect the southern kingdoms from the dangers that lurk beyond it — White Walkers, undead, wildlings, and whatnot. - Legend has it that the wall has been around for nearly 8,000 years, which is a pretty long time. For a structure 700 feet (213 m) tall, 300 feet (91 m) thick, and 300 miles (483 km) long, that’s an even more impressive feat. - There’s a scene in the show where wildlings are somehow able to shoot arrows at the Night’s Watch men standing atop the wall. If the Earth’s laws of physics apply to Westeros, then arrows wouldn’t be capable of flying such distances. - If the base of the wall was much wider than its top, gravity would play a much lesser role because the pressure would be balanced. The wall could indeed stand for centuries without much crumbling or flowing. - Yet another solution to the problem of pressure is to build the wall in several steps, like the pyramids of Maya, for instance. And the steps don’t have to be low. - By the way, have you noticed that the top of the wall is shown a lot narrower in the series than it’s described in the books? They say that a dozen mounted knights could ride abreast on the top. In the show, though, it’s quite clear that there’s only space for about four people on foot. - It’s also worth mentioning that in the books, the Night’s Watch constantly makes rounds on the wall, and men throw gravel and spill water on top of it. They do it to gradually restore the wall, in fact. - Professor Martin Truffer, whom I mentioned earlier, says there’s yet another way to make the wall last longer. And that’s by making it colder outside! - To stop ice from flowing, it should be as cold as in the coldest parts of Antarctica — and that’s about -100°F (-73°C)! A few years ago, a new synthetic drug called Flakka appeared in Florida. It wasn’t long before viral videos and sensationalized news reports of alleged Flakka overdoses started to spread across the internet, and people began comparing its effects to that of a zombie outbreak. One supposed incident involved a person who allegedly ate off a homeless man’s face on the side of a highway. The drug’s effects are often compared to that of bath salts, and include hallucinations, “superhuman" strength, and a state of “excited delirium” that is credited with driving the lunatic actions of some users. However, Flakka can be easily altered or changed, and reports have emerged that its recent incarnation has surfaced under a slightly new chemical—and just as dangerous—structure. VICE’s Matt Shea travels to Florida to meet both users and distributors to discover what’s really behind this zombie drug. Over four decades have passed since researchers discovered two continent-sized blobs wrapped around Earth's core, and they're still trying to figure out what they are. Here's what they know so far. There’s a Subterranean Biosphere Hiding in the Earth’s Crust and It’s MASSIVE - https://youtu.be/9h7DSJVeSG8 Read More: The Unsolved Mystery of the Earth Blobs https://eos.org/features/the-unsolved-mystery-of-the-earth-blobs "Part of the reason for this mystery is what Earth scientists have always struggled with: They will never be able to visit the inside of Earth. “We know less about what’s deep below our feet than the surface of the Sun or the Moon or Mars,” said University College London researcher Paula Koelemeijer. Scientists are constantly trying to come up with new ways to peek inside Earth indirectly" Continent-sized anomalous zones with low seismic velocity at the base of Earth's mantle https://www.nature.com/articles/ngeo2733 "However, the origin and composition of the anomalous provinces is uncertain. These zones have long been depicted as warmer-than-average mantle materials related to convective upwelling. Yet, they may also be chemically distinct from the surrounding mantle, and potentially partly composed of subducted or primordial material, and have therefore been termed thermochemical piles. " Origin of the LLSVPs at the base of the mantle is a consequence of plate tectonics – A petrological and geochemical perspective https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1674987118300847 "In studying the petrogenesis of intra-plate ocean island basalts (OIB) associated with hotspots or mantle plumes, we hypothesized that the two large-low-shear-wave-velocity provinces (LLSVPs) at the base of the mantle beneath the Pacific (Jason) and Africa (Tuzo) are piles of subducted ocean crust (SOC) accumulated over Earth's history. This hypothesis was formulated using petrology, geochemistry and mineral physics in the context of plate tectonics and mantle circulation. Support Stated Clearly on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/statedclearly You've probably heard about GMOs or Genetically Modified Organisms but what exactly is a gene and what does it mean to modify the genes of a plant or animal? We hear about DNA and genes all the time in the news and in our biology classes but very few of us can actually explain what a gene is? This short film is designed to help. Here we discuss a basic definition of a gene, show what a gene looks like, what it is that genes actually code for, and the basic idea behind Genetically Modified Organisms. The video also briefly mentions one of the ways DNA strongly suggests that all living things are related and share an evolutionary history. Even though the content given here is just a simplified overview of genetics, after watching this video (along with our first video on DNA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwibgNGe4aY) you should be able to easily follow any news article, basic conversation, or 100 level college course lecture on genetics, even if you've never taken a biology course or studied genetics in the past. Venezuela is in chaos. How did we get here? Correction at 1:58: The Supreme Court tried to strip the country’s National Assembly of its powers in March 2017 and not 2016. We regret the error. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Venezuela was once the richest country in Latin America. It has the largest known oil reserves in the world and its democratic government was once praised world wide. But today, Venezuela’s democratic institutions and its economy are in shambles. The country has the highest inflation in the world, making food and medicine inaccessible to most Venezuelans. Over the last four years, its GDP has fallen 35%, which is a sharper drop than the one seen during the Great Depression in the US. The country’s murder rate has surpassed that of the most dangerous cities in the world. These conditions have sparked months of protests against the president, Nicolas Maduro. And it’s easy to see why: the country has become measurably worse since his election in 2013. The Do Nothing Machine, built by Lawrence Wahlstrom, plus stationary engines by Rudy Kouhoupt at the end. Craftsmanship Museum, Carlsbad, CA. From the museum website at www.craftsmanshipmuseum.com - According to a newspaper article (paper unknown) from about the early 1960's, the inventor of this engineering marvel was Lawrence Wahlstrom, a retired clock maker. He worked in the newspaper business and for the telephone company, while also acting as caretaker and landscape gardener for a Beverly Hills estate for 40 years. He always enjoyed tinkering with clocks and had attended a clock school to learn about their repair. Somewhere along the line he acquired a fascination for gears. After coming across a surplus WWII bomb sight containing a complicated cluster of gears, he got it working again. He also realized that people prefer to be entertained rather than educated, so he began adding more and more gears to his assembly over a 15-year period starting in about 1948. The first known publicity photo of it appeared in 1950. Over the years, the number of gears continued to grow, reaching either 744 or 764 depending on which account you read. Like the motion of the machine, the actual figure is somewhat fluid. It attracted a lot of media attention over the years, appearing in magazine articles and on TV shows. It was seen on both the Art Linkletter show and the Bob Hope show. The family archives also contain a telegram arranging for Mr. Wahlstrom to appear on the Garry Moore show in November, 1954. Life Magazine gave it a full page in the April 20, 1953 issue, and Popular Mechanics gave it ½ page coverage in the February, 1954 issue. In February, 1955 it was also featured in Mechanix Illustrated magazine. There were also many other newspaper and magazine articles documenting its constant evolution. Called by its inventor variously a "Flying Saucer Detector" or other nebulous and facetious descriptions, his goal was to add at least 50 gears each year to the constantly growing project. As noted in Popular Mechanics in 1954, "We all know someone who works harder doing nothing than most of us work doing something, but we can't possibly know anything that works harder at nothing that a machine built by a California hobbyist. The machine has over 700 working parts that rotate, twist, oscillate and reciprocate—all for no purpose except movement." At some point after the Do Nothing machine came into the possession of the Antique Steam and Gas Museum in the Joe Martin Foundation's home town of Vista, CA. It was put up for auction, where Mr. Wolf purchased it in about 2003, repaired it and for years took it to several shows a year for the public to enjoy.

Nineteen Eighty-Four, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by English author George Orwell. Concepts starting at 'The Book' 6:17:32 War is Peace 6:53:30 Ignorance is Strength 7:09:03 Party Structure 7:19:02 Doublethink 8:35:00 Nature of Reality 8:47:00 Martyrdoms 9:08:45 Power 10:02:45 Chestnut Tree Café 10:27:12 Newspeak Nineteen Eighty-Four, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by English author George Orwell published in 1949. The novel is set in Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and public manipulation, dictated by a political system euphemistically named English Socialism (or Ingsoc in the government's invented language, Newspeak) under the control of a privileged elite of the Inner Party, that persecutes individualism and independent thinking as "thoughtcrime." The tyranny is epitomised by Big Brother, the Party leader who enjoys an intense cult of personality but who may not even exist. The Party "seeks power entirely for its own sake. It is not interested in the good of others; it is interested solely in power." The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, is a member of the Outer Party, who works for the Ministry of Truth (or Minitrue in Newspeak), which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. His job is to rewrite past newspaper articles, so that the historical record always supports the party line. The instructions that the workers receive specify the corrections as fixing misquotations and never as what they really are: forgeries and falsifications. A large part of the ministry also actively destroys all documents that have been edited and do not contain the revisions; in this way, no proof exists that the government is lying. Smith is a diligent and skillful worker but secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion against Big Brother. Orwell based the character of the heroine of the novel, Julia, on his second wife, Sonia Orwell. As literary political fiction and dystopian science-fiction, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic novel in content, plot and style. Many of its terms and concepts, such as Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, Room 101, telescreen, 2 + 2 = 5, and memory hole, have entered into common use since its publication in 1949. Nineteen Eighty-Four popularised the adjective Orwellian, which describes official deception, secret surveillance and manipulation of recorded history by a totalitarian or authoritarian state. In 2005, the novel was chosen by TIME magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. It was awarded a place on both lists of Modern Library 100 Best Novels, reaching number 13 on the editor's list, and 6 on the readers' list.

The evidence is OVERWHELMING that what we were taught in school about ancient human civilization, particularly about the Ancient Egyptians is FAR from accurate, specifically that, our true history was far older, and advanced than we ever thought possible… And the most recent scientific evidence further demonstrates that the Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt WAS NOT a tomb built for the Pharaohs, but is literally a massive technological structure that is beyond our current understanding. You may have seen the news articles that reported on a recent study Published in the Journal of Applied Physics, which was conducted by researchers and Physicists from Germany and Russia, which provided scientific data based on calculations which showed that the Great Pyramid can concentrate electromagnetic energy inside of its internal chambers as well as under its base and inside the subterranean chamber. The significance of this discovery cannot be overstated, because we NOW have scientific data which supports that the Great Pyramid of Giza was a technological structure of some kind. People learned to build bridges many centuries ago. At first, they were questionable constructions made of stones, wood, and even tree roots. But nowadays, bridges have turned into magnificent structures able to withstand huge strain. And still, some bridges are so bizarre and scary that not everyone would dare to step on them! #dangerousbridges #scaryplaces Other videos you might like: 14 Roads You Would Never Want to Drive On https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uq7mztW1knU& How Deep Can You Possibly Dig? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zU_CiB2GnQ 11 Mysteries of Famous Icons People Don’t Know About https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxnSirwp-2c TIMESTAMPS: The scariest bridge in America 0:43 The longest curved suspension bridge 1:34 The highest bridge in the US 2:17 The tallest bridge in the world 3:08 One of the oldest teakwood footbridges 3:56 The world's longest glass bridge 4:52 Walk of Faith (another glass bridge) 5:45 The largest rigid-frame bridge 6:32 The Drunk Bridge 7:09 Seven Mile Bridge 7:43 Preview photo credit: A tourist walks on a pavement built with glass on the cliff at the national forest park in Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, central China's Hunan Province, Nov. 9, 2011. To improve the sightseeing experience of tourists, a 60-meter-long glass pavement built on the cliff of Tianmen Mountain with an altitude of about 1430 meters was put into use recently. Tianmen mountain is a popular tourist destination in China and is famous for its natural beauty: By Xinhua/Ding Yunjuan/Eyevine/EAST NEWS, https://www.eastnews.ru/pictures/picture/id/14176051/i/0/t/0 Aerial view of the 100-meter-long and 1.6-meter-wide glass skywalk on the cliff of Tianmen Mountain (or Tianmenshan Mountain) in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in Zhangjiajie city, central China's Hunan province, 1 August 2016. A 100-meter-long and 1.6-meter-wide glass skywalk in Zhangjiajie Tianmenshan National Park opened to visitors on Monday (1 August 2016). The Coiling Dragon Cliff skywalk is the third glass skywalk on the Tianmen Mountain (or Tianmenshan Mountain) in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in central China's Henan province. It oversees the "Tianmen Tongtian Avenue" (Avenue toward Heaven), featuring a total of 99 road turns, layers after another, known as "the first highway wonders": By Shao Ying - Imaginechina/Associated Press/East News, https://www.eastnews.ru/pictures/picture/id/48593996/i/0/t/0 Animation is created by Bright Side. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - #1. The construction looms 186 ft above the water’s surface, and they say that when the weather is bad, you can't see the shore from the middle of the bridge. All things combined, it creates an eerie feeling of being suspended in some kind of nerve-racking limbo. - #2. At 410 ft long, this is the longest curved suspension bridge in the world. The deck of Sky Bridge is 2,170 ft above sea level, among the mountain peaks, and boy, that's a sight to behold! - #3. This bridge held the title of the world's highest from 1929, when it was completed, till 2001, when Liuguanghe Bridge in China surpassed it by 19 ft. - #4. The tallest bridge in the world seems to be floating over the river Tarn's gorge valley in southern France. The total length of the bridge is 8,070 ft, and its maximum height is a whopping 1,125 ft above the ground! - #5. This is one of the longest and oldest teakwood footbridges in the world. Besides, it's probably one of the most photographed as well! - #6. The world's longest glass bridge, opened in 2017, hangs over a picturesque canyon in the Hebei province of China. About 1,600 ft long and more than 700 ft high, the bridge is paved with 1,077 glass panels! - #7. The walkway isn't particularly long, only 200 ft, but the view that is waiting is breathtaking. Everyone using the pathway has to wear special anti-slip shoe covers. - #8. This is the largest rigid-frame bridge in Japan, even though it looks more like a twisted roller coaster for drivers! The structure has incredibly steep inclines on both sides, and at first sight, you may doubt that a regular car is able to climb the bridge. - #9. The locals call this construction "the drunk bridge." Its length is only 850 ft, but the curve of the bridge that protrudes over the Norwegian Sea plays a funny visual trick on motorists. -#10. The modern version of the Seven Mile Bridge was completed in 1982, and its construction cost was about $45 million. It's the centerpiece of the largest and most expensive private real estate development in American history: "Vessel," a 150-foot-tall sculpture in the middle of Hudson Yards, a new 16-building complex on the West Side of Manhattan. The honeycombed flight of fancy, made of 154 flights of stairs, was conceived by 49- year-old British designer Thomas Heatherwick, who has put his stamp on some of the most provocative buildings and public projects around the world.
