Free Trade, Flaws of a Market Economy, International Monetary Fund: Joseph Sitglitz (2006)

01:32:25
The first major protest in Seattle, Washington against the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its role in promoting economic globalization came as a surprise to many, considering the positive impacts globalization was supposed to bring. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0393330281/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0393330281&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=8f99f38c891c395fa4121f515b9a1fe3 According to Stiglitz, this was the first step in a widespread recognition that globalization was all "too good to be true." Along with globalization comes a myriad of concerns and problems, says Stiglitz. The first concern being that the rules governing globalization favors developed countries, while the developing countries sink even lower. Second, globalization only regards monetary value of items, rather than other factors involved; one being the environment. The next concern is how developing countries are controlled by globalization and the negative effects it can have on their democracies. Developing countries borrow a large amount of funds from other countries and the World Bank which essentially causes them to give up the benefits of their democracy because of the strings attached to the loan repayment. The fourth concern regarding globalization is the notion that it does not live up to its original expectations. Globalization was advertised to boost countries economically; however, it has not shown improvement in developed nor developing countries. Last but not least, the new system of globalization has basically forced a new economic system on developing countries. This new economic system is seen as the "Americanization" (Stiglitz, Page 9) of their policies as well as culture. This has caused quite a bit of resentment and financial damage. In addition to these concerns, Stiglitz highlights that individual persons and whole countries are being victimized by globalization. Globalization had succeeded in unifying people from around the world — against globalization. Factory workers in the United States saw their jobs being threatened by competition from China. Farmers in developing countries saw their jobs being threatened by the highly subsidized corn and other crops from the United States. Workers in Europe saw hard-fought-for job protections being assailed in the name of globalization. AIDS activists saw a new trade agreement raising the prices of drugs to levels that were unaffordable in much of the world. Environmentalists felt that globalization undermined their decade long struggle to establish regulations to preserve our natural heritage. Those who wanted to protect and develop their own cultural heritage saw too the intrusions of globalization. — Stiglitz, 2006, p. 7 Stiglitz then goes on to provide an overview of how we might "reform" globalization, by noting representatives of the world's national governments attended the Millennium Summit and signed the Millennium Development Goals, pledging to cut poverty in half by 2015. Additionally, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had previously been focusing more on inflation, rather than employment and income; however, they have shifted their focus in hopes of reducing poverty. Stiglitz states that countries who seek financial assistance have in the past been asked to meet an outrageous number of conditions, in exchange for the aid. This was one of the most common complaints towards the IMF and the World Bank. They have heard these complaints and have since greatly reduced the conditionality. The G8 group met for their annual meeting in 2005 and had agreed to write off debt owed by the 18 poorest countries in the world as an attempt to help with the global poverty issue. As regards the aspiration to make trade fair, originally, opening the market was done in hopes of helping the economy; however, the rights between the developing and developed countries have been skewed, and the last trade agreement actually put the poorest countries in a situation in which they were worse off than to begin with. Stiglitz focuses on the limitations of liberalization briefly to say the results of liberalization never lived up to the expectations; the developing countries were not able to follow through because their economic and political systems simply could not cope with the pressures. Finally, Stiglitz also argues that protecting the environment is one of the most important issues and countries must work together to lessen the effects of global warming. Successful development in countries such as India and China has only increased energy usage and also the use of natural resources. People from all over the world must adjust their lifestyle in order to reverse the effects of global warming. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Making_Globalization_Work Image By World Economic Forum [CC-BY-SA-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

Money and Finance: Crash Course Economics #11

So, we've been putting off a kind of basic question here. What is money? What is currency? How are the two different. Well, not to give away too much, but money has a few basic functions. It acts as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and as a unit of account. Money isn't just bills and coins. It can be anything that meets these three criteria. In US prisons, apparently, pouches of Mackerel are currency. Yes, mackerel the fish. Paper and coins work as money because they're backed by the government, which is an advantage over mackerel. So, once you've got money, you need finance. We'll talk about borrowing, lending, interest, and stocks and bonds. Also, this episode features a giant zucchini, which Adriene grew in her garden. So that's cool. The Secret World of Financial Institutions: World Bank, International Monetary Fund (2002)

01:20:13
The World Bank has long been criticized by non-governmental organizations, such as the indigenous rights group Survival International, and academics, including its former Chief Economist Joseph Stiglitz, Henry Hazlitt and Ludwig Von Mises. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0393324397/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0393324397&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=99285d2a11523ebfbf52191ec0a9b1ee Henry Hazlitt argued that the World Bank along with the monetary system it was designed within would promote world inflation and "a world in which international trade is State-dominated" when they were being advocated. Stiglitz argued that the so-called free market reform policies which the Bank advocates are often harmful to economic development if implemented badly, too quickly ("shock therapy"), in the wrong sequence or in weak, uncompetitive economies. One of the strongest criticisms of the World Bank has been the way in which it is governed. While the World Bank represents 188 countries, it is run by a small number of economically powerful countries. These countries (which also provide most of the institution's funding) choose the leadership and senior management of the World Bank, and so their interests dominate the bank. Titus Alexander argues that the unequal voting power of western countries and the World Bank's role in developing countries makes it similar to the South African Development Bank under apartheid, and therefore a pillar of global apartheid. In the 1990s, the World Bank and the IMF forged the Washington Consensus, policies which included deregulation and liberalization of markets, privatization and the downscaling of government. Though the Washington Consensus was conceived as a policy that would best promote development, it was criticized for ignoring equity, employment and how reforms like privatization were carried out. Joseph Stiglitz argued that the Washington Consensus placed too much emphasis on the growth of GDP, and not enough on the permanence of growth or on whether growth contributed to better living standards. The United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations report criticized the World Bank and other international financial institutions for focusing too much "on issuing loans rather than on achieving concrete development results within a finite period of time" and called on the institution to "strengthen anti-corruption efforts." Criticism of the World Bank often takes the form of protesting as seen in recent events such as the World Bank Oslo 2002 Protests, the October Rebellion, and the Battle of Seattle. Such demonstrations have occurred all over the world, even amongst the Brazilian Kayapo people. Another source of criticism has been the tradition of having an American head the bank, implemented because the United States provides the majority of World Bank funding. "When economists from the World Bank visit poor countries to dispense cash and advice," observed The Economist, as Jim Yong Kim said in 2012, "they routinely tell governments to reject cronyism and fill each important job with the best candidate available. It is good advice. The World Bank should take it." Jim Yong Kim is the most recently appointed president of the World Bank. Some critics,[60] most prominently the author Naomi Klein, are of the opinion that the World Bank Group's loans and aid have unfair conditions attached to them that reflect the interests, financial power and political doctrines (notably the Washington Consensus) of the Bank and, by extension, the countries that are most influential within it. Amongst other allegations, Klein says the Group's credibility was damaged "when it forced school fees on students in Ghana in exchange for a loan; when it demanded that Tanzania privatise its water system; when it made telecom privatisation a condition of aid for Hurricane Mitch; when it demanded labour "flexibility" in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the Asian tsunami; when it pushed for eliminating food subsidies in post-invasion Iraq."[61] The World Bank requires sovereign immunity from countries it deals with.[62][63][64] Sovereign immunity waives a holder from all legal liability for their actions. It is proposed that this immunity from responsibility is a "shield which [The World Bank] wants to resort to, for escaping accountability and security by the people."[62] As the United States has veto power, it can prevent the World Bank from taking action against its interests.[62] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Bank

Global Imbalances and Policy Spillovers: A New Approach at the International Monetary Fund

35:04
The Peterson Institute hosted an event on September 18, 2012, to discuss a major shift in the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) framework for identifying exchange rate and financial policies in member countries that may have harmful implications for global stability or adverse economic effects on other countries. The leaders of the IMF team for this revised strategy--Sean Hagan, Tamim Bayoumi and Steven Phillips--presented the key elements of their work, as published recently by the IMF, the Pilot External Sector Report and underlying External Balance Assessment methodology. PIIE Senior Fellows Joseph E. Gagnon and John Williamson led off with separate remarks on the IMF framework. The IMF's new approach focuses on the interconnectedness of all major economies and the spillovers that policies in each economy have on other economies. One of the key elements of this new approach is the External Balance Assessment methodology, which analyzes the sources of and cures to global economic account imbalances and volatile capital flows. Since economic recoveries have been sluggish in the advanced economies and global current account balances remain large despite the stated commitment of the leaders of the G-20 nations to narrow them, this new framework aims to provide more effective policy guidance to achieve balanced and sustainable growth. International Monetary Fund Quota || How Countries Become Members of IMF ||

11:22
Why the IMF was created The IMF, also known as the Fund, was conceived at a UN conference in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, United States, in July 1944. The 44 countries at that conference sought to build a framework for economic cooperation to avoid a repetition of the competitive devaluations that had contributed to the Great Depression of the 1930s and world War 2 About the IMF - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an organization of 189 countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world. - Created in 1945, the IMF is governed by and accountable by the 189 countries that make up its near-global membership. What is IMF Quota Important factor that helps the IMF’s functioning is the quota. This quota is basically money that a member country has to give to the IMF. As per the norms, each member has to subscribe a quota of the IMF. It is out of this quota which is basically money, that the IMF gives loans to its members. How Quota is determined The quota of a country depends on its economic importance. When a country joins the IMF, it is assigned an initial quota. The quota formula (applied for 14th quota review) is a weighted average of GDP (weight of 50 percent), openness (30 percent), economic variability (15 percent), and international reserves (5 percent). For this purpose, GDP is measured through a blend of GDP—based on market exchange rates (weight of 60 percent)—and on PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) exchange rates (40 percent).

IMF's SDRs, Gold, China & The New Emerging Monetary System

08:08
UPDATES & LINKS below... Effective October 1, 2016 the RMB is determined to be a freely usable currency and will be included in the SDR basket as a fifth currency, along with the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen and the British pound - http://www.imf.org/external/np/sec/pr/2015/pr15540.htm The IMF's SDR will soon become an intra-central bank reserve currency, denominating even new bond issuances. We'll still use our regional fiat currencies (dollars, euros, yen, pounds, yuan, etc.) for day to day transactions. The value of the original SDR was initially defined as equivalent to 0.888671 grams of fine gold which, at the time, was also equivalent to one U.S. dollar. After the final collapse of the Bretton Woods system with Nixon closing the gold window 1971... in 1973, the SDR was redefined as a basket of fiat currencies. Today the SDR basket consists of the 4 fiat currencies: the euro - Japanese yen - pound sterling - and U.S. dollar. Note there are 31.1034768 grams of gold in 1 troy ounce. Since 1973, the IMF 's SDR has lost over 95% of its value to Gold and Silver bullion. No matter how technocrats or the mass media dress up SDRs in convoluted financial speak, it is basically just another fiat currency folks. Many experts believe the IMF in concert with central banks around the world, will revalue Official Gold Reserves to give the next monetary system an appearance of legitimacy but don't be fooled. This organization's legacy throughout the 3rd world is awful. Of course precluding an IMF takeover of the world monetary system, we'll likely have to live through a G20 bank melt down via bad derivatives with BIS / FSB endorsed bank bail-ins, frozen financial accounts, etc. You may want to avoid derivative laden bank demand deposits (checking, savings, commercial, etc.). It is very possible in a crisis that banks would implement withdrawal rations of dollar bills from ATMs. Physical cash dollar notes held in a safe place may become very handy in the very real scenario of a sudden "bank freeze". For day to day expenses, cash may indeed be king in a world of digitized currencies. The Sunday following this underwhelming China Official Gold update, paper gold futures got hammered by $2.7 billion in selling pressure moving Gold down to 5+ year low of $1080 oz. It appears that China is not trying to rock the fiat price of gold higher, preferring to enter the IMF's SDR system without resistance acquiring more physical gold while the global fiat monetary system persists. ——————————————————————————————— GET THE 100% FREE BULLION BUYING GUIDE @ SDBullion.com Learn bullion buying fundamentals + critical actionable items like... - How to Avoid Counterfeit Coins / Bars. - How to Ship Bullion 100% Safely & Insured. - Which Bullion transactions are IRS Reported & which are Private? - How to spot a bankrupt coin dealer (e.g. Tulving, Bullion Direct, etc. ) before buying from them. The World Bank (WB) & The International Monetary Fund (IMF)

03:17
John Pilger on the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The World Bank is an international financial institution that provides loans to developing countries for capital programmes. The World Bank has a stated goal of reducing poverty. By law, all of its decisions must be guided by a commitment to promote foreign investment, international trade and facilitate capital investment. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is the intergovernmental organization that oversees the global financial system by following the macroeconomic policies of its member countries, in particular those with an impact on exchange rate and the balance of payments. It is an organization formed with a stated objective of stabilizing international exchange rates and facilitating development through the enforcement of liberalising economic policies on other countries as a condition for loans, restructuring or aid. It also offers loans with varying levels of concessionality, mainly to poorer countries. Its headquarters are in Washington, D.C., United States. The IMF's relatively high influence in world affairs and development has drawn heavy criticism from some sources.

International Monetary Fund | Living Green Episode 26 | Global Entertainment

01:01
International Monetary Fund | Living Green Episode 26 | Global Entertainment The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an international organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., of "189 countries working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world." Formed in 1944 at the Bretton Woods Conference, it came into formal existence in 1945 with 29 member countries and the goal of reconstructing the international payment system. It now plays a central role in the management of balance of payments difficulties and international financial crises. Countries contribute funds to a pool through a quota system from which countries experiencing balance of payments problems can borrow money. As of 2010, the fund had SDR476.8 billion, about US$755.7 billion at then exchange rates. Through the fund, and other activities such as statistics-keeping and analysis, surveillance of its members' economies and the demand for particular policies, the IMF works to improve the economies of its member countries. The organization's objectives stated in the Articles of Agreement are: to promote international monetary cooperation, international trade, high employment, exchange-rate stability, sustainable economic growth, and making resources available to member countries in financial difficulty. International Monetary Fund (IMF) And Pakistan (हिंदी)

06:21
International Monetary Fund (IMF) And Pakistan (हिंदी) The economy of Pakistan is the 25th largest in the world in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), and 42nd largest in terms of nominal gross domestic product. Pakistan has a population of over 207 million (the world's 5th-largest), giving it a nominal GDP per capita of $1,641 in 2018, which ranks 147th in the world and giving it s PPP GDP per capita of 5,709 in 2018, which ranks 130th in the world for 2018. However, Pakistan's undocumented economy is estimated to be 36% of its overall economy, which is not taken into consideration when calculating per capita income. Pakistan is a developing country and is one of the Next Eleven countries identified by Jim O'Neill in a research paper as having a high potential of becoming, along with the BRICS countries, among the world's largest economies in the 21st century. The economy is semi-industrialized, with centres of growth along the Indus River. Primary export commodities include textiles, leather goods, sports goods, chemicals, carpets/rugs and medical instruments. Growth poles of Pakistan's economy are situated along the Indus River; the diversified economies of Karachi and major urban centers in the Punjab, coexisting with lesser developed areas in other parts of the country. The economy has suffered in the past from internal political disputes, a fast-growing population, mixed levels of foreign investment. Foreign exchange reserves are bolstered by steady worker remittances, but a growing current account deficit – driven by a widening trade gap as import growth outstrips export expansion – could draw down reserves and dampen GDP growth in the medium term. Pakistan is currently undergoing a process of economic liberalization, including privatization of all government corporations, aimed to attract foreign investment and decrease budget deficit. In October 2016, foreign currency reserves crossed $24.0 billion which has led to stable outlook on the long-term rating by Standard & Poor's. In 2016, BMI Research report named Pakistan as one of the ten emerging economies with a particular focus on its manufacturing hub. In October 2016, the IMF chief Christine Lagarde confirmed her economic assessment in Islamabad that Pakistan's economy was 'out of crisis' The World Bank predicts that by 2018, Pakistan's economic growth will increase to a "robust" 5.4% due to greater inflow of foreign investment, namely from the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. According to the World Bank, poverty in Pakistan fell from 64.3% in 2002 to 29.5% in 2014. Pakistan's fiscal position continues to improve as the budget deficit has fallen from 6.4% in 2013 to 4.3% in 2016. The country's improving macroeconomic position has led to Moody's upgrading Pakistan's debt outlook to "stable".
The Bretton Woods Monetary System (1944 - 1971) Explained in One Minute

01:29
After World War 2, it was clear the world needed a new financial system and as such, 44 countries sent delegates to Bretton Woods, New Hampshire to work on just that. The Bretton Woods system lasted from 1944 to 1971, when Nixon ended it and thereby put the final nail in the coffin of not just the Bretton Woods monetary system but also to gold's monetary role. IMF warns of urgently needed reform in recession-hit Nigeria

00:45
The International Monetary Fund has warned Nigeria that its economy needs urgent reform. A report by the IMF published on Wednesday has highlighted the risks to growth for the recession-hit country and the dangers of a volatile foreign exchange market.[TAKE VO] The document could affect talks over at least $1.4 billion in international loans. It suggests Nigeria should lift its remaining foreign exchange restrictions and scrap its system of multiple exchange rates. Nigeria fell into recession in 2016, its first in 25 years, largely due to the impact of low oil prices and militant attacks on energy facilities in the Niger Delta oil hub. Crude sales account for more than 90 percent of foreign exchange earnings and two-thirds of government revenue.
