Mica is a naturally occurring mineral that is widely used in makeup for its shimmery quality. It makes eyeshadow dazzle and gives foundations a sought-after natural glow. You would be hard-pressed to find a brand of cosmetics that doesn’t use it today. However, its procurement is often illegal, involves child labour and is associated with health and safety risks. More films about India: https://rtd.rt.com/tags/child-labour/ This is the situation in India, where 60% of the world’s mica is produced. The impoverished population of Jharkhand State mine for mica despite it being banned. This is destroying the state’s nature reserve, but the world’s growing interest in mica-based cosmetics means production continues. For many locals it’s their only source of income. Even though there are serious occupational health hazards linked to mica production, whole families work in the industry, including very young children. Not a month goes by without somebody dying in the mines. Child slave labour is shockingly common here. Forced to work and deprived of education, these kids are left with only one option – to remain stuck forever in this dangerous and underpaid job. While many big cosmetic companies refuse to buy mica directly from illegal mines, they don’t question where the processing plants they shop at get their supplies from. Meanwhile, the vast majority of the mines in Jharkhand are illegal. RT Doc travels to Jharkhand to discover the unsightly side of mica’s glitter. The class they aim to certify is the 100 000+ current and former gold mineworkers who contracted Silicosis (black lung) and are still suffering from its devastating consequences. In the alternative, they seek certification of classes of employees of individual mining companies. Hundreds of thousands of workers have died of this entirely preventable disease over the last 130 years as their lives were not valuable enough for mining companies to incur the costs necessary to eliminate it.

Michael Jackson's official video for "Man In The Mirror" In keeping with the lyrical message of "Man in the Mirror," which was strongly identified with Michael Jackson and reflective of his own philosophies, the short film features powerful images of events and leaders whose work embodies the song's message to "make that change." Rolling Stone praised the short film in 2014 as "a powerful statement to deliver to personality-driven MTV." From the album Bad, released August 31, 1987 Released as a single January 16, 1988 THE SHORT FILM Director: Don Wilson Michael Jackson's short film for "Man in the Mirror" was the third of nine short films produced for recordings from Bad, one of the best selling albums of all time. The "Man in the Mirror" single hit No. 1 in four countries in 1988, topping the charts in the United States, Italy, Belgium and Poland and reaching Top 5 in Canada, Ireland and New Zealand. In the U.S., "Man in the Mirror" was the fourth of five consecutive No. 1 singles from one album on the Billboard Hot 100-making Michael the first artist to achieve this milestone. "Man in the Mirror," written by Siedah Garrett (Michael's duet partner on "I Just Can't Stop Loving You") and Glen Ballard, is one of only two songs on Bad not written by Michael Jackson and, even though it wasn't a song he wrote himself, it was a message that was strongly identified with him and reflective of his own philosophies, as demonstrated through his actions and expressed in some of his own lyrics. "'Man in the Mirror' has a great message," he wrote in his 1988 memoir Moonwalk. "I love that song. ..Start with yourself. Don't be looking at all the other things. Start with you. That's the truth." A review of Bad in Rolling Stone in 1987 called the song "among the half dozen best things Jackson has done." In contrast to Michael's other short films of the Bad era, "Man of the Mirror" tells a story not through performance, but through powerful images of oppression, homelessness, hunger, police brutality and other ills of the world, as well as events and leaders of the 20th century whose work is reflective of the song's message to "make that change." (22 Aug 2012) The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is expected to vote on Wednesday on the final version of US legislation on 'conflict minerals', precious minerals used to finance local wars like the 'blood diamonds' of West Africa. The Frank-Dodds Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of July 2010 requires American companies using materials vital to modern high-tech industries to reveal their supply chains. The rules governing how companies should comply with its Clause 1502 on conflict minerals - due-diligence regulations to be set by the SEC - have still not been defined. With the high-tech industry now under pressure from consumers, many companies have just stopped buying from areas like the Eastern Congo rather than face accusations, unfounded or otherwise, of using conflict minerals. And the mining communities of Eastern Congo blame that legislation for an economic disaster. The small town of Nyabibwe lies on the shores of Lake Kivu, around 60km (37 miles) to the south west of Goma in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It's a mining town which once prospered thanks to the abundant minerals crucial to the world economy that were found in the nearby hills. But while local shops still offer boots and shovels, but no one has bought mining equipment for months. The nearby government tin mine tells a sad story. Only a handful of workers remain, idly crushing stones to extract cassiterite, the primary ore of tin. Like many Congolese mines, activity has come to a standstill over the past two years and the miners blame the US legislation. They keep on working but hardly make a living. Mining is not mechanised and artisanal miners carve holes in hard rocks using shovels and pickaxes. The wells and tunnels that perforate Nyabibwe's mountain are narrow and pitch black; air is scarce and there is always the threat of being buried in a landslide. The price of tin from has plunged to an amount almost not worth working for. The mine used to attract more than 1,000 miners, the backbone of the economy. Today, only a few hundred remain. Given the corrupt and freewheeling world that makes up Congo's lucrative mining sector, with many mines controlled by armed groups, from foreign rebels and local militias to the Congolese army, the immediate future looks bleak. Back-to-back civil wars killed an estimated 5 million people in Congo in the 1990s. The fighting deteriorated into a greedy scramble for Congo's massive mineral wealth that drew in the armies of eight African nations. While the conflict ended in the rest of this sprawling nation in 2002, armed groups drawing on the underground wealth have continued to operate in the mineral-rich east of the country. Miners say they are not opposed to the law, but resent the 'unforseen consequences'. In fact many appreciate the fact that fraud and militarisation are being tackled. A recent Enough Project investigation said the Dodd-Frank Act has led to a 65 percent drop in armed groups' profits from the mineral trade. Rebel groups like the FDLR, or the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, seen here in rare footage obtained by the Associated Press, are at the heart of the never-ending violence in eastern Congo. These rebels are led by Rwandan Hutus, the instigators of Rwanda's genocide who escaped over the border. From here they continue to terrorise the population and vie for the control of natural resources worth millions of dollars. Congo's unpoliced and porous borders allow minerals to be easily smuggled into Rwanda and injected into a supposedly "clean" supply chain there. I struggled to come up with a descriptive title for this video. How to explain that incredible quartz vein – narrow, pure and running up so high that it went out of sight – that the gold miners chased? To me, it really did seem as if it ran to the sky… I have seen where miners have chased rich veins of quartz for impressive distances before, but I have never seen a quartz vein that was a solid slab running vertically to the heights that this one did. Another differentiating factor is that this vein must have been full of gold. One sees sections of quartz in many lode gold mines, but it is barren and so the miners leave it behind. This was different. In this mine, the miners cleared the whole vein out! Consider the – not one, but two – stamp mills outside, consider the effort the miners expended to reach that quartz vein and then to chase it up (the miners would have been drilling overhead the entire time in a space not much more than three feet wide), consider the expensive rail in this mine… The old timers were not stupid. They would not have spent that much money, they would not have done that much work and they would not have taken out that much quartz unless the gold to be found in that incredible quartz vein was worth it. And remember, that quartz vein was the only part of the mine where the miners took any ore out. Yet, they still required two stamp mills! I did not locate production numbers for this mine, but one can only imagine what was taken out. I don’t know how the miners discovered this deposit, especially as they located it before modern drilling and other technology the miners of today have at their disposal. I hiked down from the direction this mine runs and there was no sign of that quartz deposit on the surface. There were the remains of even older mining operations on the way down – the faint remains of a stamp mill, bits of metal, some surface work - and so maybe the miners had an inkling there was something below, but I don’t know what gave them the confidence to start blasting back for thousands of feet in a perfectly straight line. That was a major effort! Abandoned mining equipment is always interesting to me, but I was even more taken with the equipment at the outside of this mine as I had not heard of either of those companies – Krogh Manufacturing and Globe Iron Works – before. Usually, one will start to recognize the familiar names like Ingersoll Rand or Miners Foundry, but those names were new to me and, therefore, presumably older. The dates of the patents would seem to confirm this. The oxygen meter I was using at the time I explored this mine would alert when oxygen levels fell below 19.5%. However, it did not display what the actual percentage of oxygen was. Lower levels of oxygen are tolerable, but not MUCH lower levels. Without knowing what the actual percentage of oxygen was, I had to just judge the oxygen levels and safety by the symptoms I was experiencing. That’s pushing it a bit, but you’ve got to want it to see the treasures in life. I was alone on this trip, but with bad air it hardly matters if you are one person or a hundred. If you collapse from bad air, the guy behind you can’t grab you or he’ll succumb too. You’re done. It’s not like falling and breaking your leg or something where having someone else there will make a difference. So, it is important to pay close attention to the symptoms... With this particular oxygen meter it would stop working after alerting and being reset several times in the low O2 environment. Fortunately, the O2 meter I use now shows the exact percentage of oxygen so I can make a more informed decision on whether to proceed or not. In this mine, the low oxygen was almost certainly caused by the rotting timbers. I am glad that I didn’t turn around. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference. You can see the gear that I use for mine exploring here: https://bit.ly/2wqcBDD You can click here for my full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines

Chinese photographer Song Chao’s powerful black-and-white portraits of Chinese miners feature prominently at the COAL+ICE exhibition. Song grew up in a coal-mining district called Yanzhou, in China’s eastern province of Shandong. He started working in the mines as a teenager. When he was 23, he met a photographer who encouraged him to document the lives of his fellow workers. Few people know anything about what it’s like to be a miner, except that it involves hard labor in dangerous working conditions. But Song Chao’s perspective is unique. His portraits of miners are remarkably intimate. They capture the personalities of every miner: some defiant, others meticulous. His photos capture humor and life in the people who provide the coal that powers millions of Chinese homes.
