Application of Principles of the Toyota Production System Our research organization has strived to build a lean culture via strategies such as structured problem solving, waste removal, process stabilization and quality improvements. The goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that reintroduction of our Continuous Performance Improvement (CPI) methodology in a systematic manner would facilitate engagement of vivarium employees in the development and sustainment of daily management system, visual systems and standard work. Based on Shewhart's Plan-Do-Check-Act process improvement cycle, specific attention was given to the importance of detecting and preventing errors. A 17% reduction in process frequencies was achieved by introduction and sustainment of biological kanbans, for example. Flow was advanced from push to supermarket-type pull. Additional examples of current, target and ideal states will be presented. The collective data indicated that the hypothesis was found to be true. The reintroduction of CPI into daily work is consistent with the 4P model of the Toyota Way and selected Principles that guide implementation of the Toyota Production System.

Not only are they necessary for the proper absorption, transportation and function of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, fats are used by the body to produce cellular components, hormones and other compounds that are essential to the proper functioning of the body. As well, a moderate intake of fat is essential for maximizing body composition and decreasing body fat. But while all fats, including saturated fatty acids, have an important role in energy metabolism and body functions, the most important fats are the essential fatty acids (EFA's) since the body needs them to survive. While the human body can manufacture most of the fats it needs from other fats, carbohydrates and protein, including cholesterol, saturated fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids, there are two groups of fatty acids, called essential fatty acids, based on linoleic acid (omega 6 group - which includes GLA) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega 3 group which includes EPA and DHA), which cannot be manufactured in the body. The body cannot make an omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acid because human metabolism cannot add a double-bond to a fatty acid that is more than 9 carbons away from the delta end. For the same reason, the body cannot interconvert omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3 Fatty Acids Omega-3 fatty acids are long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids that have biological functions because they are converted to a number of active substances in the body such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes and are involved in a number of metabolic events. Linolenic acid is an essential fatty acid since it cannot be synthesized in the body. Other omega-3 fatty acids can, however, be synthesized from linolenic acid. Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are precursors for hormones and determine the composition of our cell membranes, influencing the production of pro- and anti-inflammatory substances.12 Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oils (mainly EPA and DHA) and flaxseed oil, are useful in a wide variety of conditions:13 They have been shown to: Reduce oxidant stress14 (oxidative stress or free radical damage is a factor of importance in the development of inflammatory events). EFA's have been shown to assist in treating depression and other mental health conditions. Low levels of omega-3 EFA's are common in depression. In one 2002 study, researchers found that treatment with 1 g/d of EPA improved outcomes in patients with persistent depression.45 Another study found that EPA may prove an effective add-on treatment in schizophrenia.46 Besides all the health benefits above, the EFA's may also be useful in improving body composition and exercise performance. Drugs are bad. They are very bad! According to numerous studies, about 1 in 20 people in the world abuse drugs to some degree. That’s about 230 million people, and that is a lot of druggies walking around the planet. With new drugs being created and tested each day, it seems that there is no end to the infamous “War on Drugs” and it seems that we’re losing, considering the amount of people who abuse drugs. There have been countless arguments and debates over what exactly is a drug, since marijuana is illegal while nicotine and alcohol, which have shown to be just as addicted as illegal narcotics with similar withdrawal effects, are perfectly legal. When a drug is abused over time, such as methadone, or amphetamines, they create an altered euphoric state of mind that messes with the brain. These drugs can actually force the brain to become more dependent on elevated levels of various brain chemicals that it cannot produce on its own without drugs. See how these drugs can become addictive? What tragically happens often is that a drug abuser will go get treatment and get clean, then they go back to the original amounts of drugs they were abusing before and end up dying from an overdose. Many of these drugs can be created from household products like cough syrup and bleach. Or, they can be prescriptions from a doctor that end up getting overused and abused. The drug market has become one of the most dangerous businesses to get into, as numerous gangs and mafias use drugs to make money and fund their other illegal activities. The rise in the use of drugs inspired the United States to create the D.A.R.E. program, as well as create ads such as the iconic commercial of a girl happily singing a song while displaying clear effects of using meth. If you haven’t done a search on what people look like before and after drugs, then you will be astounded as to how much drugs can change a person’s appearance, let alone their mental state and brain function. For example, cocaine creates an extreme high that lasts for about 15-20 minutes and gives the brain an overload of dopamine. This overload causes the brains natural dopamine receptors to shut down. What ends up happening is that once the high is over, the body will start to crave more and more, and thus, beginning a cocaine addiction that is hard to shake. The same effect happens in crack cocaine as well, which is a free form version of regular cocaine. However, if there is one drug that is the absolute worse to get addicted to, then it is definitely heroin. It is considered to be one of the most addictive drugs ever created. It causes the brain to release 100 times the amount of dopamine than an orgasm, and creates a euphoric and numb high that can last longer than other drugs. About the Presentation A broad-based capacity for experimentation is critical for organizations to succeed because the systems in which people are embedded are increasingly complex and fast. For instance, medical treatment used to be accomplished by "going to the doctor," a sole practitioner supported by a handful of other professionals, who mastered a body of scientific knowledge through steady practice. Now, thanks to the tremendous advances in medical science and technology, diagnosis and treatment span myriad disciplines and countless professionals. Doctors have to be masters in their own fields and masters in coordinating care delivery tailored to individual patients' needs. Experience can no longer be steadily accumulated over time. Rather, teams must experiment off-line so they are prepared for the variety of situations they'll face in real time. The same challenge of having to build knowledge in particular disciplines and learn quickly how to pull the pieces together into coherent efforts is characteristic of manufacturing design and production, services, information technology, and more. Steven J. Spear's webinar will illustrate this migration from simple and stable to complex and fast, with examples of how organizations have learned to succeed by cultivating a capacity for high-speed, broad-based experimentation. A question and answer session will allow listeners to speculate about what would be involved in developing such a capability in their own organizations. About the Speaker: Operational excellence and innovation expert Steven J. Spear is a senior lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management, a senior lecturer in the MIT Engineering Systems Division, and a senior fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. His book, The High Velocity Edge, has won numerous awards, including the Philip Crosby Medal from the American Society for Quality in 2011. Spear is an internationally recognized expert in leadership, innovation, and operational excellence, and he is an authority on how select companies in high-tech and heavy industry, design and production, manufacturing and services generate unmatchable performance by converting improvement and innovation from the rare kiss of inspiration to repeatable, broad-based, skill-based disciplines. Spear's research has been exceptionally well acknowledged with five Shingo Prizes and a McKinsey award from Harvard Business Review. Spear's "Decoding the DNA of the Toyota Production System" and "Learning to Lead at Toyota," are part of the lean manufacturing canon. His "Fixing Healthcare from the Inside, Today" and articles in Annals of Internal Medicine and Academic Medicine have been on the forefront in healthcare improvement. He has contributed to the Boston Globe and New York Times, has appeared on Bloomberg TV and radio, CBS, and elsewhere. His clients have included well-known corporations like Intel, Lockheed Martin, Intuit, Novelis, Alcoa, General Electric, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Among other accomplishments, Spear helped the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative create its Perfecting Patient Care System. That has been credited with eliminating horrible complications like central line infections and thereby improving care quality while reducing costs. The Alcoa Business System, which he helped design and launch, is regularly credited with hundreds of millions of dollars in annual savings. Other clients have dramatically compressed time and costs for marketing processes, new product development, and software design. Session Abstract: With the surge of articles and books describing how Toyota became the leader in low cost, quality production by adhering to the Taiichi Ohno mantra "Without standards, there can be no improvement", the role of the TWI Job Instruction in developing and sustaining standard work at Toyota is becoming clearer. However, in spite of increased understanding of the TWI Program and its ability to generate lasting results, companies struggle to get TWI implanted in an organization due primarily to a lack of planning and commitment. In this session you will learn from both, Patrick Graupp TWI trainings and implementations from around the world and from John Vellema, and his experiences in driving Global TWI Projects. They will identify critical elements of a successful implementation and the challenges that arise and how they can be overcome by large and small manufacturers. The most prominent stumbling block to implementing lean is the inability of companies to standardize work, and when they do, they struggle with how to effectively sustain these standards as a basis to improve. Participants will learn how a major hospital eliminated the standard work stumbling block by providing their people with the skill of Job Instruction to standardize work, and then Job Methods to improve upon these standards. Lean Construction is a combination of operational research and practical development in design and construction with an adaption of lean manufacturing principles and practices to the end-to-end design and construction process. Unlike manufacturing, construction is a project based-production process. Lean construction is concerned with the alignment and holistic pursuit of concurrent and continuous improvements in all dimensions of the built and natural environment: design, construction, activation, maintenance, salvaging, and recycling. This approach tries to manage and improve construction processes with minimum cost and maximum value by considering customer needs. The term "Lean Construction" was coined by the International Group for Lean Construction in its first meeting in 1993. The Construction in "Lean Construction" refers to the entire industry and not the phase during which construction takes place.
