EXCHANGING & WITHDRAWING CASH WHEN TRAVELLING | BASICS OF BACKPACKING #5

04:32
Let's talk money in today's episode! In particular exchanging currencies and withdrawing cash abroad without the massive fees! It is a good idea to exchange a small amount of cash before you leave so you have some funds for taxi’s or a cheeky coffee at the airport. But don’t take too much cash, only enough to cover your first couple of days. Don’t carry anymore than you are willing to lose! Using ATM machines abroad can vary. Some countries will have next to zero ATM machines which will accept foreign cards, like Japan, which is why it’s good to have cash on you till you find somewhere to withdraw. Taking a travel card is a good idea which is where you pre-load money onto the card and spend it in different locations across the world. Some Travel Cards may freeze the exchange rate or have it flexible so you get the best exchange rate when you spend! Using your home bank card is a popular option but can incur some hefty fee’s. Here are some tips: If you need to withdraw cash then don’t take out $50 at a time. Cover yourself for a few days and try not to use EFTPOS machines! --------------------- Important stuff --------------------- Support me on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/psychotraveller DON'T FORGET TO BECOME A LITTLE PSYCHO: http://goo.gl/GnWOIt --------------------- Social media is sexy --------------------- Facebook: http://goo.gl/K0u8pa Twitter: http://goo.gl/FsbWJR Pinterest: http://goo.gl/qgRD4v Instagram: http://goo.gl/abzups SnapChat: @PsychoTraveller My blog: http://goo.gl/5zP0dG Business email: psychotraveller22 at gmail dot com --------------------- What I Film My Videos With --------------------- GoPro Hero 4 Silver: http://goo.gl/9AE4Yu Sony A5100: http://goo.gl/Fo1DDY --------------------- Some Sexy Stuff Right Here!! --------------------- Get $30 off your first stay on Airbnb: https://www.airbnb.com.au/c/aford34?s=8 Get $10 off GoPro accessories with the code “PsychoTraveller” here: http://www.sandmarc.com/ (Above are affiliate codes/links which mean if you sign up/buy a product, at no extra cost to you, I make a little bit of money to help me maintain my channel and blog!)

Using credit cards abroad

01:47
Card or no card? That is the question you may ask yourself frequently when traveling to some of the world’s hottest tourist destinations. While carrying just a credit card protects you from theft – there’s no risk of having your cash stolen and your card issuer won’t make you pay for fraudulent purchases – you may find yourself unable to pay for food in a foreign country at cash-only restaurants and coffee shops.

Warning: Using VISA Debit Cards for International Travel

01:08
VISA debit cards are a safe and secure way to have cash available while you travel internationally. BUT be advised, many parts of the globe are already using a "CHIP and Pin" system. Those card processing devices will require a card with an embedded security CHIP and require you to enter your PIN. DO YOUR HOMEWORK before you leave... verify with the bank or travel firm issuing you a travel debit card that the card will be CHIP enabled and acquire your PIN. Otherwise, be prepared to use your CHIP enabled credit card and pay the associated transaction fee for the required currency conversion.

As Fees for Using Cards Overseas, BestForeignExchange.com Advises Using Cash Instead

00:06
As Metro Bank Announces Fees for Using Cards Overseas, BestForeignExchange.com Advises Using Cash Instead Metro Bank has recently announced that a fee will be introduced for using their cards overseas effective from 18th March 2014. Now all banks charge a fee for overseas use of debit and credit cards. This added cost can affect holiday makers when paying for items abroad. PRWeb (London) 4th February 2014 In line with other banks in the UK, now Metro Bank has announced that it will start charging a fee for using its cards overseas. With this announcement, all banks now impose a fee or a monthly charge for using their cards on holiday and a higher exchange rate on foreign currency than the high street. "We have found that a lot of our customers are getting stung by high fees when using their cards on holiday. With Metro Bank's recent announcement, customers of all major banks will now face these charges," says Trevor Samuel, Marketing Manager of BestForeignExchange.com. There are many reasons for travellers to avoid using their debit or credit cards while on holiday. Paying by cash is more beneficial and cheaper than using your bank card overseas. South Wales Argus proposed a New Year resolution for travellers "not to pay more to pay" by using plastic. There are several reasons to use cash instead of plastic: 1. Most card issuers charge a cash withdrawal fee for using your card in overseas ATMs. The fees can vary from 1% to 3% based on your bank. This can increase the overall cost of holidays. 2. You will not be aware of exchange rates for your foreign currency purchases until you receive your bank statement at the end of the month and usually the card issuer keeps a margin of over 2.75% on top of the wholesale exchange rates. The Office of Fair Trade says "For all types of card transactions, an 'optional issuer fee' may be added to the wholesale exchange rate. This exchange rate fee typically ranges from 2.75% to 2.99%." 3. When using a prepaid card, you will be left with limited options to top up from a different service provider despite adverse exchange rates. There is no option to switch over to another card for free unlike buying currencies with the best exchange rate on a given day. 4. Unlike cash, it may not be practical to pay for small expenses such as taxi fares or meals using a card. According to MSN Money, "Apart from the risk of having your card stolen, restaurants are one of those rare places where someone actually walks away with your card and you don't see them for a few minutes. It is much better to use cash when dining out." 5. Your ability to control your expenses is limited when using cards. While it is easy to run up huge bills on your card, it can be much harder to repay it and this can take a considerable amount of time. "For these reasons and the fact that Metro Bank has joined the slew of banks charging for using cards on holiday, we recommend using a reputable foreign exchange company like bestforeignexchange.com," said Trevor Samuel. About Best Foreign Exchange.com Owned and operated by Thomas Exchange Global, BestForeignExchange.com offers the most competitive exchange rates in London and customers that reserve currencies online will be assured the same exchange rate until close of business on the particular day despite any adverse fluctuations. Quick Tips Vietnam - Visa, Currency, SIM Cards, and Other Travel Tips

11:24
Travel tips for traveling to Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi in Vietnam: 1. Visa - go to the link below to apply for a Visa online. For the photo you need to get an actual TWO copies taken at a store like CVS/Costco HOWEVER tell them not to cut it because the photo required for the Visa is a different size from a passport. Check out the Visa approval letter for instructions. https://www.myvietnamvisa.com 2. Immigration - for either Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi airports head towards immigration but before you get in line there's a separate area to get your actual Visa. Remember you only have an approval letter and not a Visa. You will need to give them your passport, letter and fee to be paid in US Dollars (the amount should be in your email or letter). Once you get your Visa head towards immigration as usual. 3. SIM cards - if your phone doesn't seem to work then I suggest you get a SIM card, granted your phone is unlocked. There are a lot of booths everywhere selling these. I got unlimited data for about a week for $9 USD. Other quick tip, bring a small paperclip with you so you can switch the SIM card back later for when you leave Vietnam. 4. Currency - you will need to exchange for local currency. I recommend using ATMs instead of the currency exchange for better rates. If there are multiple ATMs check out the fee for each before withdrawing. 5. How to get around - if you can't walk somewhere Uber was available at both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. 6. Where to stay - stay near night market. Check out below. Ho Chi Minh - I stayed at Majestic Saigon - was about 15 min walk to night market http://majesticsaigon.com Hanoi - I stayed at Emerald Waters - location, quality, and service was great. Within the old quarter and within walking distance of shops and street food. http://www.hanoiemeraldwatershotel.com 7. Crossing the streets - look both ways, be careful, be confident, and just go for it! 8. Be mindful of travel times - streets are very congested and a lot of traffic so make sure to allot extra travel time. 9. Street food and night market - see below. Note Hanoi night market is only Friday-Sunday but there are tons of street food all over the city either way. Ho Chi Minh - Ben Thanh market was where I went. Lots of shops and street food. Try the grilled seafood! https://goo.gl/maps/GezKMRL14vo Hanoi - I didn't go to the night market but just walk around the Old Quarter near St. Joseph's cathedral below on Nha Chung street. https://goo.gl/maps/g5mp3mXQi622 10. Halong Bay - there are a lot of tours available and I booked through Viator. Personally I think one night was enough on a cruise. I booked on V'Spirit Overnight Halong Bay Cruise. Note that while food is included in the cost, drinks are NOT, and this includes water and tea. **Airport Lounge Tips Ho Chi Minh - Priority Pass lounge is available at the international terminal. After security make a left and head towards gate 10-14. You will see an unassuming sliding door next to a small pop-up shop that will lead stairs. Head downstairs. It's called the Orchid Lounge. I did not check out the lounge in the domestic terminal but it looks like there's one. Hanoi - there are no lounges available for Priority Pass or Amex. ******************************** This video was shot on a GoPro Hero 6 Black Follow me on Instagram to stay up to date on my adventures: https://www.instagram.com/rhanzpants/

Roam Mobility - Prepaid USA SIM Cards for International Travellers

05:56
For some people, flying on an airplane scares them while for others it’s the thought of planning a trip that stresses them out. What gets me nervous is knowing that when I return home, there is going to be a bill from my local phone provider with a long list of extremely high data roaming charges, SMS fees and phone charges wait for me. What if I told you there was a service exclusively designed to offer Canadians competitive data, call and text rates when visiting the good ol’ U.S. of A. Let me introduce you to Roam Mobility, a service I’ve used twice on visits to New York City. The service worked so well I reached out to them to see if they would send me a SIM card and data for an upcoming trip to a TBEX (Travel Blogger Exchange) conference in Corning, NY. They were gracious enough to not only send me a SIM card they also sent a SIM card to the two travel bloggers I was driving down with. Can The Joemalian King Remain The Ruler? | Coup

24:45
Will Joe be dethroned? Find out in today's game of Coup! #coup #tabletop #strategy Subscribe ➜ http://bit.ly/JoinJKPFam 🎲 Game Rules ♟ In Coup, you want to be the last player with influence in the game, with influence being represented by face-down character cards in your playing area. Each player starts the game with two coins and two influence – i.e., two face-down character cards; the fifteen card deck consists of three copies of five different characters, each with a unique set of powers: Duke: Take three coins from the treasury. Block someone from taking foreign aid. Assassin: Pay three coins and try to assassinate another player's character. Contessa: Block an assassination attempt against yourself. Captain: Take two coins from another player, or block someone from stealing coins from you. Ambassador: Draw two character cards from the Court (the deck), choose which (if any) to exchange with your face-down characters, then return two. Block someone from stealing coins from you. On your turn, you can take any of the actions listed above, regardless of which characters you actually have in front of you, or you can take one of three other actions: Income: Take one coin from the treasury. Foreign aid: Take two coins from the treasury. Coup: Pay seven coins and launch a coup against an opponent, forcing that player to lose an influence. (If you have ten coins or more, you must take this action.) When you take one of the character actions – whether actively on your turn, or defensively in response to someone else's action – that character's action automatically succeeds unless an opponent challenges you. In this case, if you can't (or don't) reveal the appropriate character, you lose an influence, turning one of your characters face-up. Face-up characters cannot be used, and if both of your characters are face-up, you're out of the game. If you do have the character in question and choose to reveal it, the opponent loses an influence, then you shuffle that character into the deck and draw a new one, perhaps getting the same character again and perhaps not. The last player to still have influence – that is, a face-down character – wins the game!
