Infant Swimming Resource: "It's Really Magical"

15:25
The CrossFit Journal -- (http://journal.crossfit.com) Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 4 in 23 U.S. states. Nationwide, it ranks second only to vehicle accidents. On average, 11 children drown every day. "With ISR training, just because a child wanders to the pool alone doesn't mean he has to die there, and that's our mission," says JoAnn Barnett, Infant Swimming Resource president and CEO. Infant Swimming Resource, or ISR, is a 47-year-old program that aims to prevent pediatric drowning through instruction to children as young as 6 months. CrossFit Kids has partnered with the program. While in Santa Cruz, Calif., earlier this year, Barnett taught 7-month-old Estella—daughter of Jessica Wheeler and UFC fighter Gray Maynard—how to roll over and save herself in the pool. "She did cry through the learning process—and most children do—but once they're competent in the water, the crying goes away and you have a child who's a lot safer," Barnett explains. For Wheeler, the experience was intense. "But it's really magical to watch your child learn and be able to save themselves and survive in the water," she says. Video by Dave Leys. CrossFit - "Infant Swimming Resource: Teaching Progression" with Harvey Barnett

08:22
In this video, Harvey Barnett, founder of Infant Swimming Resource, demonstrates the progression of teaching a child how to save herself in the pool. He starts with getting the child to learn how to breathe underwater, then he shows her how to hold on to the wall. "Next you teach a child to float on the back," Barnett says, noting you must teach good head orientation. The difference between a child floating face down versus face up is a matter of life or death, he says. He then takes the child further away from the wall and has her swim to it. "This is a situation where, due to the density of water, it slows the process down a bit and she has an opportunity to see and practice how various other aspects of her movement or her lack of movement influence the environment that she's in," he says. The sequence ends with the child swimming toward the wall, turning over on her back and then grabbing hold of the wall. 8min 21sec

Our son Parker Newkirk was in a story that Live 5 News (WCSC) did on July 4th, 2012. My son and I were in a story that Live 5 News did on ISR after seeing a youtube video of my son floating at 10 months in his ISR class. The story discussed ISR (Infant Swimming Resource), and how it saves children's lives. This same story will air on "America Now" on CBS in a month. I'll update with the video they do on it. ISR teaches babies and small children survival skills if they should fall in the water by themselves. infantswim.com Not one more child drowns.
Pediatric Aquatic Therapy

04:45
http://www.cpdiscovery.com, http://www.rehabmart.com Aquatic Therapy or pool therapy, as it's often called, consists of an exercise program done in the water. The buoyancy of the water supports the weight of the child and allows him/her to move in ways that would be impossible on land. Physical Therapists insist the pool relaxes muscles and reduces the force of stress placed on the joints . This, in turn, makes it easier to work and strengthen muscles. In this exclusive segment produced by CP Discovery, Physical Therapist, Susan Cook demonstrates how aquatic therapy works and discusses it's benefits. Aquatic Therapy may be used in conjunction with other therapies for children with Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Down's Syndrome and a number of other childhood diagnosis. Children with fevers, infections, or bowel/bladder problems may not be able to participate in Aquatic Therapy. Local woman teaches infants life saving swim skills

CLIFTON PARK -- Anthea Morris knows all too well the importance of swimming lessons. She runs Anthea's Swim Academy from her home in Clifton Park, teaching kids of all ages how to swim for fun, and to save their own life, and for her it's personal. My nephew actually took these lessons in Florida where drowning is one of the leading causes of death for kids, and when i saw him fall into my moms pool, and immediately flip over, onto his back and breath, and start yelling for my sister, i said i need to do this for my kids, Morris tells us. But here's the twist, she starts teaching kids to survive in the pool at the age of 6 months. Now, the 6 month old babies aren't necessarily learning the back-stroak they are learning survival techniques and how to float to safety here's how it all works: We put them in different scenarios where they have to be able to get onto that back float from any position, so they need to already be rolling, and crawling, and moving around so they have that core strength, Morris explains. Like any new trend, this method of teaching comes with it's critics. There was backlash after a father posted youtube video of his 16 month old daughter swimming across a pool. But the studies tell a different story, according to the American Adademy of Pediatrics, children under the age of 4 were less likely to

ISR - Infant Self Rescue - Infant Swimming Resource Max learning ISR. This is an important class for ALL children. They teach infants how to survive if they fall into a pool or any orther water source. There is no substitute to watching your children, however accidents happen and it is important they know what to do. THere is a misconception that this is hard on children, however Max LOVES going to his ISR classes. Honestly, it is harder as a parent to watch them do this then it is for the kid. They learn the muscle memory and skills to survive. a MUST for all kids. Video filmed at Desert Camp Community Center, in DC Ranch, Scottsdale Arizona

Cruise Tips TV - Cruising With Babies

04:31
Cruising with babies & toddlers: Hey cruisers, it's Sheri with Cruise tips TV! Cruising with infants and toddlers can be a great adventure, and a little preparation can go a long way. We've surveyed cruise-savvy parents and dug into our personal experiences to share a few tips: Tip #1: If possible, choose your Cruise Line carefully. This is likely the most important advice we can offer. While most mainstream cruiselines cater to kids, there's wide variance in the services they provide. Most will provide cribs or pack n plays for your bundle of joy, but some lines really knock it out of the park and offer free baby food, incredible childcare programs, and even special dining programs geared toward little ones. If having baby and toddler Childcare is important to you- you may want to choose a line like Royal Caribbean or Disney. They are among the few lines that provide child care options for babies under the age of 2. Disney also offers cabins with more space, and in many cases, and extra half bathroom. We recommend using resources like the family forums at Cruisecritic.com to research what line is best for you. One topic that we often hear a lot of complaints about is cruise ship swimming pool rules. Here's the deal -- the great majority of cruise lines will not allow babies and toddlers in diapers in the pools. AT ALL. Not even when they are wearing a swim diaper. Yes, there are baby pools on some ships, but they can be tiny and sometimes, very cold. There are exceptions to this, so again, if swimming or even wading in the onboard pool with your baby is important - jump online before you book and find out your ships policy. Tip #2: You'll want to pack plenty of diapers and basic medications for your baby -- such as fever reducer and teething aids. Most lines don't carry these items in their onboard stores and it's better to play it safe and pack anything your child may need to be comfortable if they become sick. We learned the hard way.... If your baby gets a fever onboard, even the ship's infirmary may not carry medication suitable for infants. Tip #3: If your cruiseline offers set dining times, You'll probably want to Choose an early dining time. Most kids are tuckered out from all the excitement of the day. Remember, room service and the buffet are a great backup option if you have little ones. Oh, and While we're on the topic of dining, we've found that packing disposable bibs is a life saver on cruises. Who wants to add to the already mounting pile of laundry while you're on vacation! Tip #4: Pack light and pack smart. You won't need a mountain of toys, books and gadgets on a cruise. Stick to the essentials, and rest easy knowing that your little one will be making new friends, exploring the ship and enjoying precious time with YOU. Stick to a few things- like their favorite stuffed animal, book or blanket. You might consider packing a small umbrella stroller for your baby, since cruise ships are giant these days. Changing mats are also a good idea on most ships, as you won't find changing rooms or changing tables in most cases. Our little man also liked to use his own baby food spoon on board. To sum it up, pack light, and Remember, its relatively easy to do a load or two of laundry on board most ships. Tip #5: Set sail with realistic expectations: No doubt, you may have those moments on any vacation with your baby where you ask yourself "what was I thinking??" But family cruises can be some of the most memorable. So, get out there, take lots of photos and cast your expectations aside. That's it for this episode. Be sure to check us out on twitter @CruiseTipsTV. Now get out there and cruise. If you like this video, please like and subscribe. And please, share our videos with fellow cruisers. We have more on the way. Until then, we'll see you with your little ones on the high seas.

4 Month Old Baby Typical and Atypical Development

12:02
***EDUCATIONAL VIDEO*** This footage compares the movements of two children at 4 months of age: one developing typically, and one developing atypically. This film goes through 8 different positions with the two children. Watch this video to see the eight positions healthcare providers use to determine if intervention is needed and what parents can look for in their baby’s development. Early detection and early intervention are best. For more information on infant development, please go to: https://www.pathways.org Download Accompanying Handout :https://pathways.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/4monthmotordelays_english.pdf All materials including videos are provided at no cost; no fees or charges may be associated with any of the Pathways.org materials without prior written approval. Each year, 1 in 40 children in the United States is born with an early motor delay, and an estimated 400,000 children are born at-risk for a delay. When healthcare providers know what to look for, they are better equipped to recognize the subtle signs of a delay in infants as young as 2 months of age, giving them the opportunity to receive early intervention services and thereby reach their fullest potential. We encourage you to use Pathways.org resources as a guide to identify potential early motor delays at each well-child visit. Child Swim Lessons Katy | Yves and Larry Stewart, Kameron's Story

05:52
At Texas Swim Academy, we strongly focus on drowning prevention and water safety. And we’ve made it our passion to empower swimmers with the skills they need to have a safe time in the pool. The Facts About Drowning Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death among children, especially for infants and children under 5. Most drowning accidents occur in swimming pools, ponds, rivers, lakes, and even bathtubs. It is important to know that children can drown in even one inch of water. Knowing how to respond in a drowning emergency situation can save a victim’s life and prevent damage to the brain and respiratory system. If drowning occurs, it’s important to act immediately. The American Red Cross recommends knowing how to recognize the signs of drowning. Active drowning victims are often vertical in the water and will try to press arms down in an attempt to keep their head above water. Passive drowning victims are motionless and float below the water’s surface. Other signs may signal that a child or adult is danger of drowning: Head low in the water, mouth at water level Head tilted back and mouth open Eyes closed or glassy, unable to focus Hair over forehead and eye area Not using legs – stance in a vertical position Hyperventilating or gasping for breath Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway Trying to rollover on back Appear to be climbing invisible ladder What to Do in a Drowning Emergency If someone is missing, check the water first. Reach for the victim or throw a life-saving device to the individual. Do not leave the victim. Administer CPR and rescue breathing immediately if the victim is not breathing on their own. The CDC says that starting CPR immediately, rather than waiting for emergency personnel, can reduce the chance of brain damage. While you are with the victim, send another individual to call 911 or the local emergency number. Those who have come close to drowning should complete a medical examination and should remain under observation for 24 hours if they inhaled water or lost consciousness to ensure that damage was not sustained by the nervous or respiratory system. Parents and guardians who would like to obtain CPR certification can find the nearest class here: http://www.redcross.org/ux/take-a-class Prevent Drowning Layers of Protection Drowning is quick and silent. Children slip under the water silently and within a matter of seconds. The best way to prevent drowning accidents from happening is by adding layers of protection. This includes: Close supervision at all times Installing barriers such as a four-foot-high, non-climbable, four-sided fence with self-closing, self-latching gates to completely surround the pool and prevent unsupervised access Installing alarms on doors leading to the pool area Installing a power safety cover Learning CPR and keeping telephone and safety equipment at poolside One of the first and best steps you can take is to learn how to swim or enroll your child in a survival swim program. Learn more about our swim programs (for both children and adults) as well as the Infant Aquatic Survival program here: http://texasswimacademy.com/our-programs/ For more swimming safety resources, please visit our resources page: http://texasswimacademy.com/swimmer-resources

Swimming Lessons for Kids | Stroke Development Program

01:09
Swimming Lessons for Kids http://texasswimacademy.com/ Our swimming lessons are a step-by-step plan of development wherein one skill is built upon another. The skills are practiced repetitively so your child learns each skill to a level of proficiency. We build self-esteem and confidence through repeated success and consistency with their training. We have broken down the step by step process into six different levels of classes. Age, maturity, physical strength, coordination and skills are all important factors in creating a safe and successful class. The requirements for every level become essential building blocks and bridges to the next skill. We also believe that every child learns at a different pace. There are no time limits for completion for each level. It will be up to your swim instructor to decide which level your child will be in and when they can move to the next level. Swimming is a lifelong activity. We strive to give each child the resources they need to be successful and independent in the water. Ages 4 and up Requirement: Child must be able to swim 15 feet independently with breath control. An assessment of their skills will be required for newly enrolled swimmers with no charge for the service. TEXAS SWIM ACADEMY is an infant, child and adult swim lesson facility. The academy strives to introduce children to water at an early age through INFANT AQUATICS, and to fully develop their swim stroke abilities through adulthood through STROKE DEVELOPMENT. Children are taught life saving swim safety skills and have the option to prepare for competitive swim team. Texas Swim Academy also offers PARENT-CHILD CLASSES to grow the bond between parent and child and to provide a seamless, comfortable introduction to water for children.
