Understanding Profit Margin
http://www.MDTSeminar.com Profit margin is part of a category of profitability ratios calculated as net income divided by revenue, or net profits divided by sales. Net income or net profit may be determined by subtracting all of a company’s expenses, including operating costs, material costs (including raw materials) and tax costs, from its total revenue. Profit margins are expressed as a percentage and, in effect, measure how much out of every dollar of sales a company actually keeps in earnings. A 20% profit margin, then, means the company has a net income of $0.20 for each dollar of total revenue earned. While there are a few different kinds of profit margins, including “gross profit margin,” “operating margin,” (or "operating profit margin") “pretax profit margin” and “net margin” (or "net profit margin") the term “profit margin” is also often used simply to refer to net margin. The method of calculating profit margin when the term is used in this way can be represented with the following formula: Profit Margin = Net Income / Net Sales (revenue) Other types of profit margins have different ways of calculating net income so as to break down a company’s earnings in different ways and for different purposes. Profit margin is similar but distinct from the term “profit percentage,” which divides net profit on sales by the cost of goods sold to help determine the amount of profit a company makes on selling its goods, rather than the amount of profit a company is making relative to its total expenditures. Rarely can a company’s individual numbers (like revenue or expenditures) indicate much about the company’s profitability, and looking at the earnings of a company often doesn't tell the entire story. Increased earnings are good, but an increase does not mean that the profit margin of a company is improving. Profit margin is a useful ratio and can help provide insight about a variety of aspects of a company’s financial performance. On a rudimentary level, a low profit margin can be interpreted as indicating that a company’s profitability is not very secure. If a company with a low profit margin experiences a decline in sales, its profit margin will decline even further, leading to a very low, neutral or even negative profit margin. Low profit margins may also reveal certain things about the industry in which a company operates or about broader economic conditions. For example, if a company’s profit margin is low, it may indicate that it has lower sales than other companies in the industry (a low market share) or that the industry in which the company operates is itself suffering, perhaps because of waning consumer interest (or increasing popularity and/or availability of alternatives) or because of hard economic times or recession. Profit margin may also indicate certain things about a company’s ability to manage its expenses. High expenditures relative to revenue (i.e. a low profit margin) may indicate that a company is struggling to keep its costs low, perhaps because of management problems. This is an indication that costs need to be under better control. High expenditures may occur for many reasons, including that the company has too much inventory relative to its sales, that it has too many employees, that it is operating in spaces that are too large and thus is paying too much in rent, and for many other reasons. On the other hand, a higher profit margin indicates a more profitable company that has better control over its costs compared to its competitors. Profit margin can also illuminate certain aspects of a company’s pricing strategy. For example, a low profit margin may indicate that a company is underpricing its goods. Though profit margin is a helpful and popular ratio for gauging a company’s profitability, like any financial metric or ratio it comes with certain accompanying limitations that any investor should consider when considering a company’s profit margin. While profit margin can be very useful for comparing companies with one another, one should only use profit margin to compare companies within the same industry, and ideally with similar business models and revenue numbers as well. Companies in different industries may often have wildly different business models, such that they may also have very different profit margins, thereby rendering a comparison of their profit margins relatively meaningless.

Profit Margin Explained + Formula: How to Calculate & Use the Profit Margin
Profit Margin Explained + Formula: How to Calculate & Use the Profit Margin. The Profit Margin is a Profitability Ratio that can form part of Your Financial Statement Ratio Analysis. In this video, which is great for the investor, manager or student, you will learn the Formula, where to Find the Data Inputs, what is a Good or Bad Result and some Initial Questions for Your Analysis. Add to your accounting and finance knowledge now for better business decisions and improved stock selection. "The Profit Margin is one of the most popular of all the ratios out there, and for good reason. Ultimately, it tells us how much profit is generated from our sales, specifically the percentage of sales revenue that ends up in profit. It is a key ratio because a primary financial performance measure of a business is profit (it’s the bottom line!). And while profit can’t be generated without sales revenue (selling your product/service is why you’re in business!), expenses are another fact of business life and keeping these expenses as low as possible leads to profit being as great as possible (within your sales range). So if you’re in business or you’re an investor, you need to know how well the business in question keeps its cost under control and how much revenue (an often quoted figure) actually ends up on the bottom line. It’s also important as a measure of ‘pricing power’, i.e. the relative power of the business within its market to charge a premium price and maintain market share." In fact, for the first time in recorded history, U.S. consumers are spending more money at restaurants than at grocery stores. With the restaurant industry growing and becoming more prevalent every year, here are 5 things you need to know about the restaurant industry: Number one: In 2016 there were more than 1 million restaurant locations in the U.S. and they generate annual sales of $780 billion. Number two: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2017 the restaurant industry employed 12 million people—enough to fill Chicago’s Soldier Field almost two hundred times over. Number three: 425,000 of the 1 million restaurants located in the U.S. are either independently owned or ran by a franchisee—which means many of these establishments are considered small businesses. You see, while franchised restaurants are associated with a larger corporate body, the franchisee who owns and operates the establishment is not much different than the mom-and-pop diner down the street. Number four: The average profit margin for U.S. restaurants usually hovers between 4 and 6 percent—meaning for every dollar in sales, the business owner only collects 4 to 6 cents. However, profit margins have historically been known to drop to as low as 1.4 percent. Number five: 33 percent of restaurant revenue goes towards paying wages, which means that government mandated increases in the entry-level wage can be really hurt an independent restaurant owner or franchisee. A business owner can only raise prices so much before customers start going away. The restaurant industry plays a vital role in both the lives of ordinary Americans and the U.S. economy.

How to Calculate the Net Profit Margin
This video shows how to calculate and interpret a company's Net Profit Margin. The Net Profit Margin, sometimes referred to as simply the Profit Margin, is calculated as follows: Profit Margin = Net Income / Net Sales Thus, a company with a Net Income of $3,000 and Net Sales of $100,000 would have a Profit Margin of 0.03, which is then multiplied by 100 and expressed as a percentage to yield a Profit Margin of 3%. If the company's Profit Margin is 3%, this means the company generates 3 cents of profit for every dollar in sales. What is a good or bad Profit Margin depends on the industry. Grocery stores tend to have a lower Profit Margin but compensate for this with a very high sales volume (they make very little profit on each sales, but they make a very large number of sales). Margin versus Markup
Profit margin versus profit markup, or margin on selling versus markup on cost, is a distinction that is often misunderstood by small business owners, contractors, consultants, as well as employees in large corporations. With painful consequences! Margin versus markup is a fundamentally different approach to pricing and profitability. Let me walk you through the calculations and the underlying thinking. If you like my story and the explanation is helpful, then please press the like button below the video. Margin is profit divided by revenue, and markup is profit divided by cost. As an example, let’s take a revenue for your product or service of $100, a cost of $80, and a profit of $20. In both the margin and the markup calculation, the profit of $20 is the numerator in the equation. However, what you take as the denominator is different! When you calculate margin, you divide profit by revenue. When you calculate markup, you divide profit by cost. So for margin, we take $20 profit divided by $100 in revenue which equals 20%. For markup, we take $20 profit divided by $80 cost, which is a 25% markup. Philip de Vroe (The Finance Storyteller) aims to make strategy, finance and leadership enjoyable and easier to understand. Understanding Profit Margin To Make More Money
When consulting a moving company owner yesterday it became clear to me that he had no clue what profit margin was. He didn't grasp that understanding profit margin was the key to making more money. And also speaking with others that don't get that raising prices doesn't necessarily make you more money. If raise prices and lower costs or at the very least keep cost that same then you make more money. You raise your prices but your cost also increase then you do not make more money. While the concept seemed quite clear to me, it is evidently not as clear to others, so I thought that I would make this video to give you an idea of how to raise prices. THe biggest problem is that you don't seem to understand the difference between markup vs. margin. Profit markup is the percentage you have to raise your prices to earn the percentage of profit margin you desire. These will not be the same percentages and this is what confuses many of you. So I thought I would give you the formulas with examples of how to calculate these different concepts: How to calculate net profit: Revenue - Expenses = Profit (or Net Profit as it is sometimes called.) $500 Revenue - $400 Expenses = $100 Profit. How to calculate Profit Margin: Profit / Revenue = Profit Margin. $100 Profit / $500 Revenue = 20% Profit Margin How to calculate Markup: Profit / Cost = Markup. $100 Profit / $400 Cost = 25% Mark Up. How to get Profit Margin: Cost / (1 - Profit %) = Profit Margin. $400 Cost / (1 -20%) = $400 Cost / (1- .20) = $400 Cost / .80 = $500 Determining profit margin is simply using the above formula. David teaches real solutions to the biggest – and smallest – challenges in independent restaurants. Watch this video and then take action! ************************* Video Notes on How to Determine Restaurant Profit Margin Before you an determine where your restaurant's profit margin should be, you have to know your key numbers, including prime cost. Total cost of good sold plus your labor cost including taxes, benefits and insurance. If you have at least $850,000 in sales, you can aim for 55%. Right there you've spent 55%. Your occupancy rate should be 5-8% - 10% on the high side. You should budget for 3-4% in comps so your employees can compensate guests and reward them at their own discretion. And then you have a marketing budget at around 2-4%. The stats have given restaurant owners the baseline of 5-8% profit margin. Restaurants are hard to run and take a lot of work! I don't think 5-8% is worth it. If you work with our numbers and use our systems, your profit margin can be in the 15-20% range, when your sales are $850,000 or more. ************************* ************************* For more on this topic, visit our blog at http://bit.ly/2cbuMjp STAY IN TOUCH http://therestaurantexpert.com/free-e-newsletter/ FACEBOOK FOLLOW! http://facebook.com/therestaurantexpert SUSBCRIBE http://bit.ly/2cYOIfr

Gross Profit Margin Formula | Calculation (with Examples)
In this video we have discuss Gross Profit Margin Formula along with some simple practical examples. 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚 ------------------------------------------------ Investors must start investigating at every level. He or She needs to know how every part of the company works. When an investor evaluates the statement of income, it's not enough to check a profit ratio such as a net profit margin. Let us look at the formula of Gross Profit Margin Gross Profit Margin =Gross Profit / Revenue * 100 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚 ---------------------------------------------------------- Return on profit is an important factor for investors. The investors mainly look at the net profit margin and also the gross profit margin. The gross profit margin calculator is useful for investors because it can be easily compared with other similar companies by calculating the percentage. 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 ------------------------------------------------------------- Let us take a practical example to explain the formula of the gross profit margin. In its statement of income, Chocolate Pastries Ltd. has the following information- Net Sales – $500,000 Cost of Goods Sold – $300,000 To find out the year 's gross margin. First of all, we need to find out Chocolate Pastries Ltd's gross profit. Following is the calculation to find gross profit. Gross Profit = (Net Sales – Cost of Goods Sold) = $500,000 - $300,000 = $ 200,000. So, Using the formula of gross profit margin, we get – Gross Profit Margin = Gross Profit / Revenue * 100 = $200,000 / 500,000 * 100 = 30% From the above calculation of the gross profit margin percentage, we can say that Chocolate Pastries Ltd. 's gross profit margin is 30% each year. Profit margin/profit margin formula
The amount by which revenue from sales exceeds costs in a business is known as profit margin. This ratio also called Profit margin, net margin, net profit margin or net profit ratio. It is part of profitability ratios. Profit margins are expressed as a percentage. Formula The formula of profit margin is equal net income divided by net sales. For the calculation of profit margin, we need to find first net sales and Net income. Profit Margin formula = Net Income / Net Sales Net Sales Net Sales is calculated by total sales to subtract sale discount and sales return and allowance. Net Income Net Income is calculated by Net sales less total expenses of the business. Example for profit margin Let explain profit margin calculation with the help of real word example, Joney is doing Toyshop business. His business had net income $50,000 and Net Sales $120,000. The profit margin for Joney business is equal to 41.7%. The right way to calculate profit margin find out your COGS (cost of goods sold). For example $30. find our your revenue (how much you sell these goods for, for instance $50). calculate the gross profit by subtracting costs from revenue. $50 - $30 = $20 divide gross gain revenue: $20 / $50 = 1.4. express it as percentages: 0.4 * 100 = 40%. this is the place where you calculate profit edge. or simply use our gross margin car finance calculator! As can perform see, margin is a simple percentage calculation, but towards markup, it's based on revenue, but not on Cost of goods Sold (COGS).

How Does Costco Make Money?
Editor's note: The member figures in the video are in thousands, so the 51,600 member number cited is actually 51.6 million paid members. You might think that Costco is your average retailer… but it’s not. The “everything in bulk” store sells cleaning supplies, jeans, pet food, and anything in-between, but Costco doesn’t actually make much money on the merchandise it sells. In this video, we’re going to break down exactly where the cash really comes from for Costco. According to the company’s 2018 results, it sold $138 billion in merchandise – that’s a lot of Kirkland brand trail mix and discount prescription glasses. The products they sold cost the company $123 billion, leaving $15 billion for the business. BUT WAIT! We also have to account for all the company’s retail employees, pallet trucks, and store overhead expenses that enable Costco to sell those goods and give away those sweet, sweet free samples. All those costs combined totaled nearly $14B. So we’ve got: • Sales of $138 billion • Cost of goods sold of $123 billion • And selling, general, and administrative costs of $14 billion. That leaves us with just $1 billion dollars… but the company reported over $3 billion in net income for the year. So where’d the extra money come from? Costco’s real source of income, its memberships. In order to shop at Costco, you need to be a member, and annual membership costs either $60 or $120, depending on the benefits an individual or business chooses. Those membership fees add up over time, in the company’s 2018 results, they said they collected $3.1 billion in membership fees. A huge chunk of this revenue flows directly down to the company’s bottom line, because memberships are relatively cheap to create – all the company needs to do is give people a card, maintain a tracking system, and occasionally provide some customer service. All told, that’s a much higher-margin business than selling products to consumers, even at regular retail prices. If you look over the past few years, you’ll see Costco’s net income tracks pretty closely to the revenue it brings in from membership fees. Year Membership fees Net income 2016 $2.6 billion $2.4 billion 2017 $2.8 billion $2.7 billion 2018 $3.1 billion $3.1 billion The revenue from membership fees is what allows the company to offer customers the marked down prices and cheap private label goods they’ve come to expect. It also means that while merchandise sales matter for the company, the metrics that Wall Street tends to care about are mostly related to Costco’s member base. When the company reports earnings, investors want to see the company continue to add members, and over the past few years, it has: Year Paid members 2016 47,600 2017 49,400 2018 51,600 And the members the company brings in are generally pretty satisfied with what they’re paying for. Costco maintains a member renewal rate of around 90%. Satisfied members keep the money consistently flowing in, and it helps insulate Costco from the creeping competition of e-commerce. The membership model has helped Costco earn the “Amazon-proof” label, and kept the company’s brick and mortar business thriving even as online sales make up a larger portion of U.S. retail. Membership fees, it’s how Costco actually makes money. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subscribe to The Motley Fool's YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/TheMotleyFool Or, follow our Google+ page: https://plus.google.com/+MotleyFool/posts Inside The Motley Fool: Check out our Culture Blog! http://culture.fool.com Join our Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/themotleyfool Follow The Motley Fool on Twitter: https://twitter.com/themotleyfool
