What is a Mutual Fund | by Wall Street Survivor

01:55
What is a mutual fund? Learn more at: https://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com A mutual fund is a professionally managed investment vehicle that pools money from many investors to purchase securities (stocks, bonds, money market instruments etc.). A money manager then decides how the funds are invested so you don’t have to – but you pay for it. A mutual fund’s management and operational fees, known as the management expense ration (MER), are deducted from the return on your investment. While it is tempting to think that a mutual fund is a hedge fund…it’s also incorrect. Mutual funds aren’t hedge funds because mutual funds can be sold to the general public - unlike hedge funds. There are many kinds of mutual funds:  Specialty funds that focus on particular market sector (energy, health, etc.)  Index funds (which track a market index like the S&P 500)  Real estate funds

Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds, Oh My!

03:44
Recently, I was visiting my parents at their home and I found a note card in my old room with my CFP study notes. On the note card was details about "calls" and "puts," which are fancy words for trading strategies in the financial world. When I saw the note card I realized how confusing financial lingo can be and got really annoyed. Why? Well, I was annoyed at the fact that so much of the lingo is nonsense that just tries to overcomplicate strategies so people feel overwhelmed and paralyzed by the information. But instead of staying annoyed, I decide to do something about it. It inspired me to make a video describing the basics of stocks, bonds, mutual funds and ETFs. Although you may know the differences between them already, it never hurts to have a review to really understand how they work. I find that once you're educated about investing, you can make informed decisions to start investing for your financial future. So in today's video, I explain the difference between a stock, bond, mutual fund and ETF. The Difference Between Bonds vs Stocks vs Mutual Funds

02:14
How are bonds, stocks, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds different? In this video, Pure Financial's Director of Research, Brian Perry, CFP®, CFA® explains. Read the full blog: http://bit.ly/StocksBondsMutFunds Transcript: So, today we're going to talk about stocks, and bonds, and mutual funds. And stocks and bonds are investment asset classes. Stocks enter into a portfolio in order to provide growth, but they are volatile - they move up and down. Over the long term, they should provide higher returns than bonds. Bonds in a portfolio are there to generate income, but also stability and diversification. Oftentimes, when stocks go higher, bonds fall. And so the idea of combining stocks and bonds in a diversified portfolio makes sense for the vast majority of investors. Mutual funds, on the other hand, are not an asset class. They're an investment vehicle. And so, when it comes time to decide how to invest in the stocks and bonds you're going to own, you have three choices: you can buy individual securities, you can buy mutual funds, or you can buy ETFs - Exchange Traded Funds. The choice varies, depending on what you're trying to accomplish and the asset class, but broadly speaking, individual securities are where you go out and you buy Microsoft or GE, or you buy a municipal bond, and you own just that. There are no ongoing fees associated, but you are responsible for doing your own research and monitoring. And it can be hard to be fully diversified. Mutual funds and ETFs provide professional management diversification. And although there are ongoing costs, with many mutual funds, the costs can be quite low. As with most aspects of investing, the choice of a mutual fund, an individual security, or an ETF isn't a straightforward or simple one, and the choice is going to ultimately depend on you, the investor. But it's definitely worth considering because the vehicle you use is going to impact your investment returns. Importantly, and in conclusion, if you buy a mutual fund, an individual of security, or an ETF, you still own stocks or bonds. So when you're working on your asset classes, and your asset allocation, don't worry so much about what vehicles you've used. Think of it as "how many stocks do I own" and "how many bonds do I own." And then a separate, discrete decision will be, individual securities, mutual funds or ETFs. For more on stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, look at the blog on PureFinancial.com. Money and Finance: Crash Course Economics #11

10:36
So, we've been putting off a kind of basic question here. What is money? What is currency? How are the two different. Well, not to give away too much, but money has a few basic functions. It acts as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and as a unit of account. Money isn't just bills and coins. It can be anything that meets these three criteria. In US prisons, apparently, pouches of Mackerel are currency. Yes, mackerel the fish. Paper and coins work as money because they're backed by the government, which is an advantage over mackerel. So, once you've got money, you need finance. We'll talk about borrowing, lending, interest, and stocks and bonds. Also, this episode features a giant zucchini, which Adriene grew in her garden. So that's cool. Special thanks to Dave Hunt for permission to use his PiPhone video. this guy really did make an artisanal smartphone! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eaiNsFhtI8 Crash Course is on Patreon! INVESTING IN A STOCK, MUTUAL FUND OR A BOND IS RISKY... -ROBERT KIYOSAKI

02:01
Most financial experts want you to believe that investing is risky. Well, the Rich Dad company says, "Investing is not risky." What is risky is not improving your financial intelligence or your financial IQ, having no financial education. So let me give you a few examples. There's two basic types of investors. One is fundamental. I would say Warren Buffett is a fundamental investor. That's income, expense, assets, liabilities. Most people, since they can't read a financial statement, really don't understand the fundamentals. That's what the CASHFLOW game teaches people, is how to be fundamentals. We all know markets go up and markets go down. Markets go up and markets go down. So the reason the average person thinks investing is risky is because prices go up and then they lose everything. The reason investing is risky is that to be a professional investor, whether it's fundamental or technical, is you have to use insurance. Look, Ladies and Gentlemen, you do not have a car without insurance. You don't buy a house without insurance. Yet the average person putting their money in a stock or a mutual fund or a bond, they don't have insurance. That's what's risky. If you're going to be a professional investor, you have to understand markets up and down. That's not news. But when markets are up, you buy an insurance policy here in case it goes down. For some people, that's called a put. Or you can put a stop. In real estate, my banker requires me to have disaster insurance. So a point here, Ladies and Gentlemen, is this: is that investing is not risky. It's taking advice from people who don't know what they're talking about a lot of the time, or people who don't sell you the insurance. That's risky. To put yourself in a stock or a mutual fund without insurance is absolutely risky. It's no more sense than buying a car and not having insurance. So Ladies and Gentlemen, investing is not risky. Being financially not sophisticated, not educated, and taking advice from people who also believe investing is risky is the riskiest part of investing. And that's what makes the Rich Dad company different. Best known as the author of Rich Dad Poor Dad—the #1 personal finance book of all time—Robert Kiyosaki has challenged and changed the way tens of millions of people around the world think about money. He is an entrepreneur, educator, and investor who believes that each of us has the power to makes changes in our lives, take control of our financial future, and live the rich life we deserve. With perspectives on money and investing that often contradict conventional wisdom, Robert has earned an international reputation for straight talk, irreverence, and courage and has become a passionate and outspoken advocate for financial education. Robert’s most recent books—Why the Rich Are Getting Richer and More Important Than Money—were published in the spring of this year to mark the 20th Anniversary of the 1997 release of Rich Dad Poor Dad. That book and its messages, viewed around the world as a classic in the personal finance arena, have stood the test of time. Why the Rich Are Getting Richer, released two decades after the international blockbuster bestseller Rich Dad Poor Dad, is positioned as Rich Dad Graduate School. Robert has also co-authored two books with Donald Trump, prior to his successful bid for the White House and election as President of the United States. http://www.richdad.com Facebook: @RobertKiyosaki https://www.facebook.com/RobertKiyosaki/ Twitter: @TheRealKiyosaki https://twitter.com/theRealKiyosaki Instagram: @TheRealKiyosaki https://www.instagram.com/therealkiyosaki/

Does index fund investing work for bonds?

03:47
Index fund investing is often most associated with stocks, however the same passive strategy can also be used for bond investing. Scott Donaldson of Vanguard Investment Strategy Group says index fund investing can be equally as effective for bonds. **For more information about Vanguard funds, including at-cost services, visit vanguard.com or call 877-662-7447 to obtain a prospectus. Investment objectives, risks, charges, expenses, and other important information about a fund are contained in the prospectus; read and consider it carefully before investing.** All investing is subject to risk, including possible loss of principal. Past performance is no guarantee of future returns. The performance of an index is not an exact representation of any particular investment, as you cannot invest directly in an index. Bond funds are subject to the risk that an issuer will fail to make payments on time, and that bond prices will decline because of rising interest rates or negative perceptions of an issuer's ability to make payments. © 2014 The Vanguard Group, Inc.
