An effort is under way worldwide to better manage our planet's forest resources and better enhance their role in mitigating climate change. Forest loss and degradation in developing countries account for nearly 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Monitoring and reducing these emissions has been the key goal for the international community in climate change negotiations and is important for the upcoming Rio+20 conference on sustainable development. Viet Nam is one example of a country that's taking important steps to manage and expand its forest resources. Previous loss of forested areas has been reversed and the country is now increasing forest area by about 1% every year.

During this series we interacted with a youth journalist working for an Indian news daily for over 10 years in Indian mountains. He writes on issues related to natural resources, people's rights, environment and developmental issues in the region on regular basis. We interviewed Mr. Deepak Benjwal on issues related to climate change including the environment and developments happening in the western part of Himalayan region of India. While he feels that Climate change in the region is not happening at the rate and situation has been exaggerated so. In this way he finds that with the access to various amenities people in urban centres in the Indian mountains have now become habitual of a number of luxuries and facilities like water heaters, coolers, air conditioners, among others, and they are using them, which is not exactly due to climatic change or rise in temperature. However, he observes that the agriculture productivity in the region has reduced a lot due to harsh weather conditions. On the issues of natural resources he mentioned that those river systems, land and forests belonged to the local people earlier, now have no rights on them due to government policies and actions. He finds that the national and state governments are working in such a way that people are not at all involved in decision making process of natural resource acquisition. He quotes example that, whenever and wherever the government wants to acquire or give land, forest or water body to a corporation or business it just gives one sided order to them to do so, while people are not asked during any such process. In many of the hydro-power and biodiversity conservation project the locals are totally alienated and their rights to natural resources have not been considered. As way forward he suggests that the primary issue in the mountains is related to migration of youth for employment and livelihood to other cities and that could stopped by developing employment and livelihood opportunities with in the region. Also the mountain people should be given priority in various jobs and opportunities by the government. He mentions that the forest and land related rights of local people's should be protected, as they need fuel, fodder and fiber on daily basis. He thinks that the governments have big plans in place towards energy security and conservation projects, but, in his opinion the way it's working, the local people are completely excluded.

Life is hard for rural women in Nepal. Many live in remote, rugged areas with poor access to social services, and their days are filled with a lot of manual work including collecting firewood, fodder and water, farming, and other household duties. They and their families depend on forests for natural resources and to reduce the risk of floods and landslides. But sometimes—due to lack of alternative opportunities to make a living—local communities overuse or destroy forests. And though we’ve seen improved management of community forests in recent decades, women are often not included in community decision-making processes about their forests even though they rely on forest resources. This is particularly so for women from marginalized and poor households. WWF and its many partners work with government and local communities to help improve lives and restore forests as part of overall strategies to conserve large-scale landscapes and wildlife in Nepal. We’re empowering women to participate in local decision-making processes and stand up for their rights to forest resources and the benefits they provide. We’re also introducing clean energy approaches to reduce the time women spend collecting firewood and ease the pressure on forests. Such approaches include biogas (gas produced from raw materials such as agricultural waste and manure), solar power, small hydropower plants, and fuel-efficient cook stoves. WWF is also helping women adapt to climate change. For example, in places where water sources are dwindling because of changing rainfall patterns, we’re improving water supplies to reduce the amount of time and labor expended to collect water. With the time and energy they save, women can focus more on childcare, start small enterprises to earn a living of their own, and manage their forests. All this improves lives and nature—and women are strong custodians of their local forests.

"In the spring of 2011, the Denman Forestry Issues Series was presented by the School of Forest Resources (SFR), College of the Environment, at the University of Washington. The series featured nine speakers celebrating the international contributions of SFR to the United Nations International Year of Forests 2011, which has the theme of raising awareness of sustainable management, conservation, and development of all types of forests throughout the world. “There’s not many places like this left,” says Chris Smith, wildlife biologist. With more than 35 years of experience, Smith heads Ducks Unlimited Canada’s boreal conservation programs, managing the nonprofit group’s science-based efforts to protect forest and wetlands in the region. The boreal region of Canada stretches across more than a billion acres, and is one of the largest intact forest ecosystems on Earth. Pew’s International Boreal Conservation Campaign encourages a balance between development and conservation and works with the people who live there to achieve that goal. People of the Boreal is a multimedia project that tells the stories of those who have the most to gain or lose from decisions about how the region is managed. We are not city people. We don't like the hustle and bustle. Having a peaceful place that's relatively untouched is very important to us. So for us, it was natural - the north was the place that we wanted to be. We've said many times driving from the south that, when we start to get into the bush, that it starts to feel like we're coming home. My name is Chris Smith. I work for the boreal program of Ducks Unlimited Canada, and I live in Cranberry Portage in northern Manitoba. One of the things that I really appreciate about living in the boreal and living where we are is the fact that it is quiet. You hear every footstep when you're walking through the forest. It's one of the largest intact ecosystems on the globe. Really, there's not many places like this left. Many people think of the boreal forest as sort of just being trees. Evergreen trees. That is in the northern part of Canada. The reality is that about 40 percent of Manitoba's boreal forest is made up of water and wetlands. Because I work for a wetlands conservation organization, I'm continually observing these wetland systems that are so prevalent, and continue to think about the values of these things. They filter and purify our water, they function almost like a sponge. So they're great for moderating floods. They create a lot of habitat for wildlife. Wetlands store more carbon than the terrestrial environments, and when you look at the size of the boreal forest in North America, it's regulating our global climate. More and more scientists are saying that. As Canadians, we have a huge responsibility, globally, to ensure that these wetlands remain intact, and functioning. For 10 years, I worked in forest planning, helping the company develop forest management plans. Given that I've worked for both conservation organization and in industry, I'm a strong believer in conservation. We also have to have a sustainable, sustainably developed, economy. The reality is, we're a natural resource-rich country, and many of those natural resources are in the boreal forest, and they contribute millions and millions of dollars to our national, provincial economies and local economies. It's unrealistic to think that we can conserve everything, or preserve everything, or develop everything. There's room for both. Increasingly, people living in the north are wanting to have a say in the way their backyard is being developed. The fact that so much of the boreal is intact, you have this unique opportunity to forward think. And say hey, how might we want to develop this area going forward - with this notion of conserving while developing. If people are willing to work together, wonderful things can happen. I’m very fortunate to have a wife that also enjoys living in the north. And she also gets inspired by the surrounding nature that we have here. We made a decision very early that we wanted to retain as much of the natural forest around our home as possible. The provincial park actually is the water line right in front of our home. And so the bay that we look across will never be developed because it's in a park. How do you put a price tag on that? After all these years, I've still remained curious. I guess that's part of being a biologist. Through my career, I've been very fortunate to have done a lot of aerial survey work and reconnaissance work. The first thing that really strikes me is how much water is out there, and how connected these systems are. The other really awe-inspiring aspect of flying over the boreal is just how big it is. It's pretty amazing. It sort of goes on forever.

Medardo Ortiz, one of the leaders from the community of Dureno in Ecuador's Amazon, explains the importance of forests to the A'i Kofán indigenous people. As he takes us on a tour of Dureno we learn about the close link between nature conservation and human well-being. From school and education, to taking care of its elders, and even a bit of home improvement, Medardo shares with us how his community is gaining by protecting its remaining forests. Dureno is one of the partners of Socio Bosque, a program jointly desinged by Ecuador’s Ministry of Environment and Conservation International, that provides direct financial incentives to farmers, indigenous peoples, and Afro-communities, who voluntarily conserve their forests. The financial incentive to Dureno is funded by the Chevrolet Sail Carbon Neutral initiative, which involves offsetting CO2 emissions from vehicles, through the conservation of native forests that are part of Socio Bosque.
