Redefining Learning & Teaching using Technology. | Jason Brown | TEDxNorwichED

09:52
"Did you know that 16% of 8-11 year olds own five or more media devices and 72% of 12-15 year olds own three or more media devices? 51% of households with a child aged between 3 and 15 have a tablet compared to 7% in 2011. No matter where you look, children and students are using technology more and more because it is becoming more accessible. What is the education system doing to respond to this? Does technology have a place in schools? How can technology be used to effectively improve teaching, learning and productivity in the classroom? " Jason is a Year 13 A level student studying at Wymondham High Academy. He is passionate about technology in education and has been working with Microsoft to promote technology in education since November 2013. Part of his role as a Worldwide Microsoft Student Ambassador is to promote and advocate the use of technology such as smartphones and tablets in the classroom and inspire students to make the most of the technology they have. He has presented at events in Seattle and London about technology in education. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. We will discuss a particular model of learning – the Growth Zone model – as a framework for understanding varying reactions to change and challenge. The webinar will suggest a set of strategies for moving teachers out of their ‘Comfort Zone’ to a place where they can expand their range of skills in the classroom. We will also look at what online help is available for more technophobic or techno-sceptic teachers. For teachers who are mainly comfortable with technology but are contemplating undertaking something new with their students, the webinar will propose a strategy to ensure that any ‘risky’ venture turns into a greater level of skill and personal development. We will end the webinar by discussing how teachers can share their journeys and reduce the element of anxiety and risk for their colleagues. Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund 2014 Project Lead: Cork Institute of Technology Other Partners University College Cork Tralee Institute of Technology University College Dublin Dublin Institute of Technology Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) in 3rd level education continues to grow unabashed. As noted by Donnelly et al (2013), teaching and learning will need to adapt. Technology will need to become an ever-bigger part of the learning process. What is key to the growing development of this is the education of those who would use this technology for the purposes of teaching and learning – teacher education and development are central to the more successful national ICT interventions. (Hanafin, 2008). Donnelly & ORourke (2007) identified that – In the Republic of Ireland, as elsewhere, the use of online technologies has become an increasingly important challenge in academic staff development. However, without adequate training and an awareness of how to effectively implement these tools, the effectiveness of these tools can become diluted and may even become counter-productive. ODonnell et al (2012) emphasised that once tools become available, it is imperative that instructors receive adequate training, to ensure that they can achieve effective use of these tools. This is in keeping with Recommendation 11 of the High Level Group on the Modernisation of Higher Education. Effective pedagogy is key to this construct. Though a large number of open-source and commercial TEL tools exist; without sufficient training on how to put these to practical use, they may in the main be incorrectly used and/ or under-utilised. ODonnell and Sharp (2012) reported that “In order for e-learning to be a success university management and staff must take ownership of e-learning and satisfy themselves that pedagogy can be maintained, even though the medium of delivery is changing.” This project proposes to develop teaching and learning resources that will equip instructors with the tools and knowledge required to utilise tools and resources for TEL in an effective and practical manner. Resources will focus on assisting instructors in identifying different teaching approaches and the technologies that can support and enhance those approaches. TEL Tools will cover practical pedagogical principles for TEL, based on best international practice and theory, as reflected by all partners experience in TEL. The resource will clearly outline the key benefits to those TEL tools, placing them in the context of useful and effective modes of assessment and learning (e.g.: independent learning, work-related learning, peer- assessment, etc.). Real-world case studies (e.g. Capturing reflective learning using video or, Promoting learner autonomy through media design and online delivery) will be researched and reported throughout the project, exemplifying the use of TEL tools and contextualising the use of them in third level. Content in the platform will consist of a series of short, media-rich learning objects (Bricks). Each of these bricks will focus on a specific practical aspect of implementing effective TEL. These bricks will be available for individual viewing, but bricks will also be organised into Stacks. These stacks will string together a series of learning bricks which will have a larger learning objective. Users will be able to create their own strands using bricks for active, self-orientated learning.

“Places like Ouagalab will take forward the digital economy in Africa,”

01:07
Guiella Gildas, an IT engineer, is co-founder and president of Ouagalab. Launched in 2011, Ouagalab provides a space for young people to access and learn about digital tools, no matter their resources or level of skill. It is also a meeting place and incubator for innovation, prototyping and collaboration, and is intended to stimulate entrepreneurship. “Places like Ouagalab will take forward the digital economy in Africa,” says Gildas. “This is happening in places where young people are using what little resources they have to be able to do big things.” After finishing school, Gildas was unable to pursue his own passion for electronics as no tertiary institution in his country offered that specialization. Instead, he trained in IT and telecoms. ‘I didn’t get a computer until quite late because my parents couldn’t afford one. I’m sure there are thousands of children who have had to wait even longer than I did or who have never had one,’ says Gildas. This is why he asserts that old IT equipment should be reused and not discarded as waste. Knowing that many children do not have access to computers, Gildas refurbishes old equipment – alongside young people – in order to set up IT rooms at their schools. ‘We need to implement actions that enable other people to find their voice. This is why we like using these digital tools with children, so they can they grow up believing there are no obstacles,’ adds Gildas.
