Michael making love in this godly place called home. This is an earth palace for the gods. May we hear the glorious birds sing! My favorite parts are around 4-5 minutes and around 10 minutes. Yes yes, this is not perfectly musical nor melodic. that wasn't my intent. my intent was to practice fluid changes and play with transforming colors, shapes and textures of sound. Rhythmically kind of boring and on beat, but that's alright. I am so thankful to be here. Thank you god for allowing me to exist. And thank you gaia for giving soul this body! Michael Conover: Information Visualization for Large-Scale Data Workflows
Presented at SF Data Mining on Oct 9, 2013 The ability to instrument and interrogate data as it moves through a processing pipeline is fundamental to effective machine learning at scale. Applied in this capacity, information visualization technologies drive product innovation, shorten iteration cycles, reduce uncertainty, and ultimately improve the performance of predictive models. It can be challenging, however, to understand where in a workflow to employ data visualization, and, once committed to doing so, developing revealing visualizations that suggest clear next steps can be similarly daunting. In this talk we'll describe the role that information visualization technologies play in the LinkedIn data science ecosystem, and explore best practices for understanding the structure of large-scale data in a production environment. From hypothesis generation and feature development to model evaluation and tooling, visualization is at the heart of LinkedIn's machine learning workflows, enabling our data scientists to reason and communicate more effectively. Broken down into clear, structured insights based on proven workflow patterns, this talk will help you understand how to apply information visualization to the analytical challenges you encounter every day.

Analyzing and modeling complex and big data | Professor Maria Fasli | TEDxUniversityofEssex
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The amount of information that we are creating is increasing at an incredible speed. But how are we going to manage it? Professor Maria Fasli is based in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex. She obtained her BSc from the Department of Informatics of T.E.I. Thessaloniki (Greece). She received her PhD from the University of Essex in 2000 having worked under the supervision of Ray Turner in axiomatic systems for intelligent agents. She has previously worked in the area of data mining and machine learning. Her current research interests lie in agents and multi-agent systems and in particular formal theories for reasoning agents, group formation and social order as well as the applications of agent technology to e-commerce. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Cosma Shalizi - Why Economics Needs Data Mining
Cosma Shalizi urges economists to stop doing what they are doing: Fitting large complex models to a small set of highly correlated time series data. Once you add enough variables, parameters, bells and whistles, your model can fit past data very well, and yet fail miserably in the future. Shalizi tells us how to separate the wheat from the chaff, how to compensate for overfitting and prevent models from memorizing noise. He introduces techniques from data mining and machine learning to economics -- this is new economic thinking.

DEF CON 17 - Michael Schrenk - Screen Scraper Tricks Extracting Data from Difficult Websites
Screen Scraper Tricks: Extracting Data from Difficult Websites Michael Schrenk Screen scrapers and data mining bots often encounter problems when extracting data from modern websites. Obstacles like AJAX discourage many bot writers from completing screen scraping projects. The good news is that you can overcome most challenges if you learn a few tricks. This session describes the (sometimes mind numbing) roadblocks that can come between you and your ability to apply a screen scraper to a website. You'll discover simple techniques for extracting data from websites that freely employ DHTML, AJAX, complex cookie management as well as other techniques. Additionally, you will also learn how "agencies" create large scale CAPTCHA solutions. All the tools discussed in this talk are available for free, offer complete customization and run on multiple platforms. Michael Schrenk is a webbot developer and the author of "Webbots, Spiders, and Screen Scrapers" (2007, No Starch Press). He has also written for ComputerWorld, php|architect and Web Techniques magazines. Mike also gave presentations at DEFCON X, XI and XV. He works for a wide range of clients across North American as well as in Russia, Spain and The Netherlands. Stop by www.schrenk.com and say hello. ML Meets Economics New Perspectives and Challenges (Michael I. Jordan)
While there has been significant progress in the theory and practice in machine learning in recent years, many fundamental challenges remain. Some are mathematical in nature, such as the challenges associated with optimization and sampling in high-dimensional spaces. Some are statistical in nature, including the challenges associated with multiple decision-making. Others are economic in nature, including the need to price services and provide incentives in data-based markets. And others are systems challenges, arising from the need for highly-scalable, robust and understandable hardware and software platforms. I will overview these challenges, focusing on the economic issues. To learn more: https://databricks.com/product/getting-started-guide

Dr. Michael Gashler: Machine Learning for Non-Traditional Challenges | Nowhere Developers 2018
Watch University of Arkansas Professor, Dr. Michael Gashler and his full talk Nowhere Developers Conference 2018, titled "Using Neural Networks to Solve Non-Traditional Challenges". Abstract: It is well understood that deep neural networks can be highly effective function approximators, but it is less well known that function approximation is not the only thing they can do. Neural networks can also infer missing values in data, generate anticipated observations, estimate state in dynamic systems, remove noise from inputs, reduce dimensionality, and fuse information from different modalities. Applying neural networks in such atypical ways requires the user to have a little knowledge about how they work internally. This talk seeks to impart a little intuition for what happens inside a neural network, and will demonstrate how neural networks can be used in applications that require a more than just function approximation. The goal of this talk will be to enable the attendees to make more effective use of neural networks in non-traditional applications. Speaker Bio: Michael S. Gashler studies in the field of machine learning. His research interests focus on methods that enable machines to perceive and understand high-dimensional observations, and to operate effectively in circumstances that were not anticipated a priori by the programmer. Dr. Gashler earned his Ph.D. in machine learning with a focus in non-linear dimensionality reduction from Brigham Young University in 2012. Prior to his graduate studies, he worked for Microsoft where he helped to develop the security system underlying the Common Language Runtime. He is the architect of several open source projects, including "Waffles", a toolkit of machine learning and data mining algorithms. He taught himself to program when he was young by trying to build the video games that his parents did not give to him. He now hopes to inspire students to build technology that science has not yet given to us. In particular, his lab intents to narrow the gap between the cognitive capabilities of humans and machines. About the Conference: Nowhere Developers Conference 2018 brought together hundreds of developers and engineers from across the U.S. for a one-day, pure tech conference in Bentonville, AR on March 15. With a mission of showcasing the incredible development and engineering talent in middle America, the conference featured local, regional, and national speakers from companies like Google, Mozilla, Mailchimp, and Walmart speaking about the state of the industry, software engineering, emerging technology such as machine learning and cryptocurrency, and the region's growing technology ecosystem. For more information, visit www.nowheredevelopers.com or on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Follow the conference hashtags #NWD2018 and #nowheredevelopers.

Data management is an invaluable resource that businesses are not taking advantage of. Many companies aren’t aware that there’s a science behind the collection, transformation, and application of data to create business strategies and solutions. This process is called data mining, and it isn’t exactly a walk in a park. Data mining is an in-depth, highly involved, and incredibly time-consuming process that many companies just can’t execute in-house.

Drones and Data Mining: The Intelligence Transformation After 9/11
Data mining and drones have both sparked controversy, but have these tools given the US the upper-hand against our enemies? Must Americans give up a degree of privacy for the sake of national security? After 9/11, intelligence agencies have expanded their reliance on data-mining tools to amass and analyze metadata from around the world on suspected terrorists, world leaders, and ordinary citizens in an attempt to net useful tips. Drones have emerged as another critical instrument in the fight against Al Qaeda and jihadist extremists. But do these attacks keep us safe, or does the collateral damage breed more terrorists? Join John Moseman, former chief of staff to the Director of the CIA, and Andy Johnson, former staff director of the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, for an in-depth discussion of the transformation of the intelligence field and the debate surrounding these changes.
