In November 2009, Eco-Justice Collaborative (www.ecojusticecollaborative.org) traveled with representatives of Topless America and the Sierra Club to central Illinois to take a first-hand look at longwall mining. This highly-mechanized form of mining includes planned subsidence, causing land to drop from 4 to 6 feet. It is occurring under some of the best farmland in the world, trading prime farmland for cheap coal. As land subsides, foundations crack and septic systems and wells are affected. Residents often leave their homes and farms, depopulating and destroying what used to be cohesive communities, rather than negotiate repairs with mining companies. Longwall mining is Illinois form of mountaintop removal mining. As with mountaintop removal mining, toxic chemicals are used to process coal. Evidence suggests that these chemicals are leaching into ground water and water supplies at selected locations. This video highlights impacts in central Illinois Macoupin County, and takes an initial look at the proposed Deer Run Mine in Montgomery County which, if constructed as planned, will be the largest coal mine in the U.S. To learn more, contact Pam or Lan Richart at [email protected] or Citizens Against Longwall Mining: [email protected]

Here are 11 of the most unusual findings deep in the earth like ancient and time primate fossils or trapped toads alive in rocks!! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr # 7 Toads found in Rock One strange phenomena that still doesn’t have an explanation are toads that find themselves entombed deep into stone and continue to live. For years quarriers and miners have discovered to their surprise, live toads inside of the rocks they crack open. In some cases the toads are found 5, 10, and even 20 feet deep inside of rock. In all cases, they have no visible way in or out and yet in all cases they are all still alive. This bizarre phenomena is often called “toad in the hole”. No one knows how these toads find themselves in the rock, or how they survive without any water, food, or air. # 6 Ghost Miners in Mponeng The world’s deepest gold mine called the Mponeng Mine located in South Africa runs so far into the ground with so many winding tunnels that it’s almost like a dark underground city. The expansive, dark, and hot mine is almost impossible to completely keep watch over so every once in awhile an illegal squatter will be discovered. Mponeng squatters are called “ghost miners” and will find empty caverns to make their home in, illegally mine gold to sell above ground, and will even meet with prostitutes in the mines. # 5 The Bold Travelers of Mponeng - Desulforudis audaxviator In the world’s deepest gold mine, a new species of bacterium was discovered called Desulforudis audaxviator. Audaxviator translates to “bold traveller” which refers to the fact that the bacteria was found 2 miles below the surface of the Earth and is the only organism in its ecosystem. The strange bacteria has evolved to live without sunshine or oxygen. Instead, it lives off of hydrogen and sulfide as food, which come from the breakdown of radioactive elements. Basically, it’s a nuclear waste eating bacteria. It’s the only one of its kind and have amazed scientists with its complete solitude underground. # 4 Giant Roach Fossil Found in Ohio Coal Mine Geologists were combing through an old coal mine in an area known for its plant fossils when they discovered an extremely rare fossil. It was a giant roach fossil - about 4 inches long and twice as big as most modern American roaches. The fossil is rare because it’s completely in tact, while most insect fossils are only partial imprints. Fossils in the cave also preserved some of the smallest cockroach fossils ever found and their color patterns. Inside the coal mine, even more rare insect fossils were found including a rare ancient arachnid and a 60 inch long and 12 inch wide centipede. The chemistry of this coal mine in Ohio somehow preserved these insects with extreme detail that is not seen anywhere else. # 3 Dead Body found in Ghost Town Mine Hobby adventurers had the scare of their life when they were exploring an abandoned ghost town called Whroo in Victoria, Australia. The two were in the ghost town’s abandoned mine when they found a dead body covered in plastic and shoved into a deeper hole inside. The victim was a 50 year old man in a Neil Young shirt and the perpetrators were later found to be a 26 year old man and 30 year old woman. The details on this case are scarce, but it has all the makings of a really good CSI episode. # 2 Four Square Miles of Carboniferous Forest Discovered The fossils of almost an entire forest from the Carboniferous period was uncovered in the ceiling of two adjacent coal mines in Illinois. This discovery is the largest single-period fossil discovery in recorded history. Archaeologists delved into the 250 feet deep mine to explore and record the fossils. There were upwards of 200 specimens of detailed shrubs, trees, flowers, and even insects. # 1 Tiny, Strange Primate Fossil In the Krabi coal mine of Thailand, archaeologists uncovered a new species of a teacup sized primate. They found mandibles that belong to the pea-sized primates called Krabia minuta. Krabia minuta were native to Asia and are the ancestors to all monkeys, apes, and humans. They were impressively able to make it to Africa despite being separated from a body of water at the time that was bigger than the Mediterrenean sea. This bizarre find is very important for archaeologists, because it indicates a period of extreme evolution of primates in the area and will continue to yield more discoveries in years to come.

As the dust of globalization settles, Americans in the so-called Middle America are feeling left behind. In this film, we hone in on Saline County, a small community in southern Illinois where natural disasters and local coal mine closures have left residents economically disadvantaged and in need of help. We examine what led these traditionally blue-dog Democrats to vote for Donald Trump, and why their future — and who they vote for next — still matters.

On the site of the famous Cherry Coal Mine disaster, in 2002, where 259 miners lost their lives in Cherry IL at the St. Paul mine in 1909. At the time, there where still remnants of the coal mine left and I felt a great need to document it before the State reclamation project came in and leveled the site and buried the structures. They did just that, a few years after this video was made. The only thing that remains are the slag pile hills and the back wall of the boiler house which was converted into a wooden garage port long ago and up to this point. I would not be surprised if these get leveled too as they did at the mine site a few miles south of Cherry, in Ladd IL. Lets hope the slag piles remain to be seen for many miles in the distance as a reminder to those who perished there back in 1909. In 1998 I became obsessed with the topic, and being a model builder, I thought it would be a great idea to build a replica of the ole mine site as it once was in 1909, so I got permission and the funds from the Cherry Booster club, and it was to be displayed permanently in the Cherry Library. Several thousands have visited to see the model and it is something I will always be proud of. I also cut an album about the Cherry Mine, but I do not have it available on the internet. You will have to contact me personally to get a copy. Anyway, I was going through some VHS tapes and seen this footage of me explaining a few things about the coal mine. I thought it wasn't too shabby and decided to put it up for posterity's sake and for someone who may be interested. If you would like to know more about this story please check out http://cherrycoalminedisaster.tripod.com Thank you. Special Thanks to Matt Phalen for being the videographer

When I uploaded this video to YouTube, I wasn't exactly sure where I shot this video on July 4, 1990 of derelict stripping shovels, a drag line and a bucket wheel excavator at a closed coal strip mine. However, Bob Cebuhar commented here that this was the Freeman United Coal Buckheart Mine south of Canton, IL. Much of what's seen here in terms of earth moving or coal mining equipment is enormous. Unfortunately, there isn't anything like a car or truck next to these machines to lend an idea of scale. But, if you look at some of the catwalks and doors on these behemoths, that should give you an idea of how truly massive some of this excavating equipment was. I believe today all this has since been scraped and the mine land reclaimed.

A national program to remediate safety and environmental hazards from past coal mining was created by the passage of federal law -- The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA). SMCRA, Title 4, Abandoned Mined Land Reclamation http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/uscode/30/25/IV The administering agency is the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE or OSM) within the U.S. Department of the Interior. See: http://www.osmre.gov/aml/AML.shtm More about SMCRA and OSMRE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uq7YI8AHnQ Abandoned Mines: Stay out, stay alive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EsZqik612U (I was with OSM from April 1978 to May 1995; this helped get me to leave): On the night of March 4, 1995, an entire eastbound lane of Interstate 70 in Guernsey County, Ohio suddenly collapsed into a 10-foot crater swallowing a car and nearly several others plus a semi-truck --- the entire interstate being closed for six months until $4.4 million in repairs were made. On September 15, 1994, Robert Mooney, an acting field director for the federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, had sent the state a letter expressing concern for a worsening situation. The state ignored his request for an investigation of voids in the abandoned coal mines beneath the highway. More: http://groups.google.com/group/bob-mooney/web/i-70-collapse 1/13/2011 - Interstate-72 bridge damaged by mine subsidence http://www.sj-r.com/carousel/x512656240/I-72-bridge-damaged-by-mine-subsidence (Excerpts) A routine bridge inspection last fall showed damage from mine subsidence under the bridge on the east side of the river, said Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Josh Kauffman. He said the subsidence has had "a very slight impact" on the bridge, which was built in 1974. "It is still able to carry the loads it was built for," Kauffman said. "It is a very small dip." IDOT is coordinating efforts with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' Office of Mines and Minerals. "We have devised a plan to stabilize the structure by drilling a series of bore holes to the depth of the abandoned mine and injecting a concrete grout mixture to fill any voids left from coal mining operations," Kauffman said. Department of Natural Resources spokesman Chris McCloud said the agency's Abandoned Mined Land Reclamation Division said a DNR contractor will be at the bridge Monday, weather permitting, to begin filling the area east of the river with concrete.
