Watch This Video Before Pouring A Concrete Foundation – Construction Tips

07:45
http://www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/foundations/index.html Click on this link for more videos on construction, building foundations and concrete. Here's a video I wish everyone who ever poured a concrete building foundation would watch at least once before pouring the concrete and then wondering why they had problems that could have been solved with a little information. I see this all the time and will probably see it for years to come, but once the concrete is dry, any excess bulges will probably need to be chipped away with the chipping hammer or jackhammer and this isn't going to be easy.

How to Build a Concrete Floor - Foundations

05:48
Subscribe for Part 2 :) When we bought the farmhouse, it came with barns previously used for storing livestock. Having no livestock, and needing space to put all the machinery and tools required for restoring the house, we turned it into a workshop. Unfortunately the original concrete floor was very thin, totally wonky and had no hard core underneath. So we had to dig out and fill back in to create the level surface needed. We split it into 2x3 pads as we wanted to save money on ready mixes. This is us digging out 1 row of 3. We had to split it in half so we had covered space to store the tools. We haven't done the other 3 pads yet, but when we do I'll show the finished floor. Make sure to subscribe for more parts!

Two Ways To Make Stronger Wood Framed Shed Foundations – Design And Building Ideas

This video was inspired by a question I received from someone wondering how to build a stronger foundation for their shed in areas where it snows. Snow loads on the roof can create additional weight for the foundation and might require larger structural beams or more concrete footings.

Garden Room Workshop: Part 4. Setting out & Foundations

11:16
Part 4 of a video series about how to self-build a timber-framed garden room office (aka tiny house)/wood workshop in the UK. This video covers setting out the garden room's perimeter and the foundations. The purpose of this video series is to provide all the information required for viewers to build their own garden room rather than just a montage of the building work. It took me months of research to learn everything in these videos so I hope to save people time and money. The videos are a mix of theory and footage of the build including all the mistakes I made along the way. I am not a builder or tradesman, just a keen DIY-er with some basic tools. Everyone can do this! In the longer term, I hope to turn this channel into a community for garden room self-builders and to eventually evolve into a woodworking projects channel- the real purpose of my garden room! Safety: dust mask, gloves Materials: 7N dense concrete blocks (£1.44 each) Floor timbers (see next vid for more info) Hardcore Portland cement Sand Weed fabric and plastic pegs Thermolite blocks for retaining wall as can be cut with a saw unlike dense blocks. If I were doing this again, I’d use a bed of mortar instead of sand on top of the hardcore as this would make it easier getting the first block level. I used a 1:4/1:5 cement to sand mix- the less cement, the stronger it cures. The less water used, the stronger it cures. I added just enough to make it pliable in order to level the blocks. I sprayed the mortar with water for a couple of days to slow the curing time which also makes it stronger. Shipping Container Home: Foundation Types - best type of foundations for container homes

08:46
When building a shipping container home, you need to lay a foundation which the containers can be placed upon. The foundation ‘type’ you can use will vary depending on: your budget, structural requirements, local soil type and local building conventions. You need to make sure you choose the right foundation type for both your budget and the local environment. Getting the decision about the type of foundation to use wrong can be devastating and it can bring your entire project to an abrupt holt- in fact this is one of the biggest mistakes people make when building a container home. Shed-Building Methods: On-Grade Foundations

04:51
The methods used to build a shed can be divided into four construction phases: foundation, floor framing, wall framing, and roof framing. For each construction phase there are several options, but you might not be able to choose a specific construction method. That’s because the local building department often dictates the type of foundation or method of framing the walls or roof. The building inspector will also approve the most-appropriate spot on your property to build the shed.

Building a Shipping Container Home | EP01Permits and Foundation Design

13:01
In Episode 1 we will go over the basic considerations for buying shipping containers, explain how we got building permits for a shipping container house and show how we constructed the concrete foundations. Link to the company i bought my shipping containers from: https://www.containerdiscounts.com/shipping-containers-for-sale-home-made-modern Follow us on instagram for project updates: https://www.instagram.com/benjaminuyeda/ Shop the Container Home: https://www.homedepot.com/c/openhouse Explore the Container Home: http://www.uncontained.house/ We are still working on getting the website for this project up and running so please be patient. Buying the Shipping Containers: We purchased one trip condition hi-cube containers. California requires that shipping containers used for homes have documentation showing that have not had toxic or radioactive materials in them. This normally means that you need one trip condition containers with appropriate certificates. I bought my containers from https://www.containerdiscounts.com/shipping-containers-for-sale-home-made-modern and paid $4800 each for the 40-foot hi-cube containers and $3250 for the 20-foot hi-cube container. Hi-cube containers are a foot taller than typical shipping containers. Permits: I recommend going in person to the local building department showing them the survey and asking them for a checklist of everything that needs to be completed to get building permits. The survey is important because it shows the building dept both the physical nature of the property and documents its legal boundaries and history. I explained that I wanted to build a shipping container house and asked for a complete checklist of everything I would need to get done and submit in order to get building permits. Architectural Design I used the architecture firm I co-founded, ZeroEnergy Design, to produce the architectural drawings. Even though I am a co-owner I made sure to pay the firm for the hours of preparation that this task would take. It would be unfair to my partners if I used firm resources for my own personal project. I paid $5000 for the creation of the architectural drawings. Structural Engineering I sent the architectural drawings over to the structural engineering firm I hired, and they created the structural details and created a package of calculations showing that these details would meet all code requirements and result in a safe and strong building. This package of drawings and calculations was required by the building dept. My architecture firm primarily practices on the east coast and does not have a stamp in California so I had the structural engineering firm stamp the drawings. The building dept gave me the option of having either the architecture firm or the engineering firm stamp the documents. Foundation design: We ended up building a monolithic on slab on grade concrete foundation. We worked on designs for some piers that would have saved in material costs but then the space underneath the container would have been classified as a crawl space and the bottom of the container would have to be 18” off the ground at a minimum. This would mean I would have to build stairs and railing for all the decks. Grading the site and excavating for the foundation I rented a bulldozer and hired an operator to level a portion of the site where I wanted to place the house. I then rented a back hoe to dig out the footings for the foundation. Building the forms The forms were built out of 2x8s screwed to steel stakes that we hammered into the ground. Reinforcement We used #4 rebar to reinforce the concrete. This was wired together to match the structural drawings. Concrete Day Concrete day was pretty exciting. We had to pump the concrete to one of the foundation slabs because the truck couldn’t get close enough without driving over the other forms. Building Concrete Machinery Foundations

02:53
Some machines require a custom foundation with clearance pits, water, and drainage. Other machines are so heavy they require a reinforced foundation with additional concrete, just to support the weight. This foundation needed pits, water drainage, and a lot of extra concrete. It will hold a BIG machine! See some demolition work, removing a roof from a building: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY2tcKJS0Ag

Building an Extension #1 - How to set out

12:54
The Extension Project is a brand new series from Skill Builder following the build of a side and rear extension on a semi-detached house. In the first instalment of the series, Roger provides an overview of the project and explains the setting out process. Setting out footings for an extension “It’s very important when you’re building anything that you set things out properly because if you get it wrong at the setting out stage it has implications throughout the job. “In other words, if you start right; you finish right". “It doesn’t matter if you spend a day setting out footings for an extension, this is an investment. “This setting out stage is not the line of the brickwork – that can be done at a later stage using a laser level, this stage of setting out footings for an extension focuses on working out the line of the brickwork – in other words where it is going to be and how far away from the existing building so we can get it in an absolutely straight line. “Start by taking a couple of battons and work out where the extreme edge of the brickwork might be but use something more substantial for the cross piece to avoid rocking because if it rocks even slightly you could throw your brick line off.” “Take the drawing and work out how far away from the building the line needs to be and stick a screw into the form at this spot. We know that the brickwork is 300mm overall: 100mm for brickwork, 100mm for cavity and another 100mm for brickwork so we can also mark the inside edge of the wall on our cross piece. “Repeat this step at the other end. Run a line in between the screws at the oiter edge of each forms. Then run the inside line; the lines should then be parallel and the same distance off the building – if they are not it is possible the building is not straight in itself. “The next thing we do is mix up some mortar, slap it onto the foundation and take our spirit level, line it up and mark it off at the bottom. “We can then begin to put the corners up on either end of the building and then get the laser level and level through and then run the brickwork between the two corners laying to the line.” =================================================== Don't forget to stay up to date with Skill Builder! NATURAL BUILDING - FOUNDATIONS AND MATERIAL OPTIONS

05:31
Get the full video course here: http://www.members.thiscobhouse.com/online-cob-house-workshop/ The first part of building your cob home will be the foundation. This is the first detail to consider for building any structure, and the information presented in this video is relevant to just about any natural building you might construct. The foundation is a unified, stable base which holds the weight of your walls, upper floors, roof, and any live loads. It also distributes the weight of the house over a large area and prevents it from sinking into the ground, which can be catastrophic to a building’s structure. You must build on solid, dry ground. Foundations can be built using a variety of materials, such as: stone, concrete, and gravel. A good foundation is vital to the life of your building and it should be given the consideration it deserves as a critical piece of the structure. Foundations for cob buildings can include the rubble trench below ground and the above-ground stem wall that holds the cob walls. The rubble trench below ground level works with the stem wall to further distribute the weight of the building evenly, to provide water drainage around the structure, and to anchor the building into the ground which limits movement of the building’s walls. The stem wall, which sits above ground on top of the rubble trench, extends up at least 1 ½ feet. The stem wall acts as protection for the walls and floors from water damage. It acts as a moisture break so that water does not seep up from the ground into the walls. Water runoff along the ground is not able to touch the cob portion of the walls, and water splash back from rainfall cannot reach that high. Its important for your foundation to protect your walls from water since your cob walls will deteriorate if they are soaked by it. Even in arid climates, it is not recommended to build the cob walls starting at the ground level as this shortens the life of the structure. Especially for massive earthen building, the importance of foundations cannot be overemphasized. Do your due diligence and plan for a solid, strong foundation. If your foundation is well designed, your building will enjoy a much longer life. From here on, we will be focusing on how to build a simple, yet effective, continuous (monolithic) foundation consisting of a rubble trench and a stem wall.
