Brexit LIVE: Parliament debates Brexit preparations

03:29:25
THERESA May is set to ask the EU for a short Brexit delay today as Brits are "fed up" with politicians' dithering more than 1,000 days after they voted OUT. In a sign that the PM is confident she can get her deal pushed through on the third time, officials said today she won't be asking for a long delay to add more wasted time to the process. A No10 official said this morning: "PM won't be asking for a long extension. "There is a case for giving Parliament a bit more time to agree a way forward, but the people of this country have been waiting nearly three years now. "They are fed up with Parliament's failure to take a decision and the PM shares their frustration." A long extension could have been up to three YEARS - with a break clause if a deal is finally done... Theresa May loses her voice at Brexit debate

03:06
THERESA May faces a moment of truth today after finally securing changes to her Brexit deal hours before MPs vote on it. The PM won last-minute tweaks to the Irish backstop plan which she says will stop Britain being tied to the EU. But it's still not clear whether or not the fix will be enough to convince rebel Brexiteers they should support her in tonight's crunch vote. This evening the House of Commons will vote for a second time on whether or not to approve Mrs May's deal. If she wins, Britain will be on track to leave the EU with a deal in 17 days' time. But if the deal falls, MPs are then likely to delay Brexit by up to three months in a further vote scheduled for later this week. Senior Brexiteers such as Jacob Rees-Mogg and Iain Duncan Smith warned the jury is still out and refused to say how they will vote tonight... Monumental defeat for Brexit sparks chaos

15:04
Theresa May's Brexit deal has been crushed by a record margin as British lawmakers rejected it by 432 votes to 202. After eight days of parliamentary debate and 200 speeches, members of the House of Commons ignored the Prime Minister's final pleas and delivered a humiliating verdict on her plan to take Britain out of the European Union. The result -- the worst parliamentary defeat for a British government in the modern era -- means the Prime Minister now faces a deep political crisis, with no clear path out of the mess. Speaking moments after May's humiliating defeat, opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn put forward a motion of no confidence in May's government. Corbyn said the challenge would allow the Commons to "give its verdict on the sheer incompetence of this Government." Brexit live replay: MPs vote to request Article 50 extension

09:07:45
THERESA May is set to bring her Brexit deal back from the dead - holding a third vote on it as a last-ditch bid to avoid a delay of up to two years. Following a night of political chaos and a shock Tory rebellion, the House of Commons is almost certain to vote to delay Brexit today - meaning the UK won't quit the EU on March 29 as planned. Mrs May warned that the Commons will now have to choose between a "short technical extension" to give her the chance to get her deal through at the third time of asking - or a long delay which would see Britain taking part in the next European Parliament elections. She hinted she will hold a third "meaningful vote" on the Brexit deal next week in a last-ditch bid to convince Tory rebels they must back her or risk Brexit never happening. In chaotic Commons scenes, Mrs May lost control of the Brexit process again in the face of a massive Remainer rebellion. The Prime Minister backed a motion which would have ruled out a No Deal Brexit on March 29 but left it open for a later date. But in a shock move, MPs instead voted for a more hardline amendment from Tory ex-minister Caroline Spelman, stating that the UK should NEVER leave the EU without a deal... House of Commons debate on extension of Article 50

03:49:25
Today is the third of three days of big Brexit debates in the House of Commons this week. On Tuesday, MPs rejected the Government’s Brexit deal in the second ‘meaningful vote’. This was followed by a debate and votes yesterday in which MPs voted against leaving the European Union without a deal. Now MPs are considering extending Article 50. Article 50 of the 2009 Lisbon Treaty sets out how a member state leaves the European Union, with a two year period between the member state "triggering" the Article and the day that the state leaves the Union. The UK Government triggered Article 50 on 29 March 2017 so is due to leave the European Union on 29 March 2019. If the Article 50 period is extended, the UK would remain a member of the European Union during this period. Brexit: Commons reacts to Bercow's ban on meaningful vote

05:11:10
John Bercow today refused to explain his controversial Brexit blocking - or apologise for meddling. The Commons Speaker made a string of sarcastic jokes when he was approached by the BBC this morning. He ignored repeated questions about his controversial move to stop Theresa May holding a third vote on his Brexit deal. Mr Bercow was filmed walking to work in Parliament and asked: "Can you explain to the public what you did yesterday?" But instead of responding, he said, "I really feel you ought to get yourselves some coffee or tea" - then made a joke about the reporter's hat. Pressed on the issue, the Speaker sneered: "I'm sure people are so very grateful to you for showing such interest at this time in the morning - very grateful to you, very well done." As the camera crew crossed the road with him, Mr Bercow snapped: "Careful, careful! There are cars coming along here, I'm not going to sacrifice myself for your benefit. "I know that you attach great weight to what you think, but perhaps you'd be kind enough to allow me to proceed." May's Brexit deal defeated by 149 votes (Live replay)

11:54:50
BRITAIN was tonight plunged into chaos once again as MPs voted to kill off Theresa May's Brexit deal by 391 votes to 242. Now 993 days after the referendum, and with just 17 days before Brexit, Brits are still in the dark about when or if we will ever leave the EU. Furious MPs blasted the uncertainty - saying the "wretched soap opera of Brexit continues" as the country heads "back to square one". Parliament has repeatedly voted against Mrs May's strategy for leaving the EU on March 29. But without a clear alternative on the table, the latest defeat opens the door to a range of wildly different outcomes - from a cliff-edge No Deal to a second referendum which could cancel Brexit entirely. Tomorrow MPs will vote on whether Britain should quit the EU without a deal in 17 days' time. But they are expected to oppose the idea - and will instead back a delay to Brexit in a further vote likely to take place on Thursday. Tory MP Bob Seely, who voted for the deal, warned that tonight's result would "prolong the Brexit purgatory" and "grab defeat from the jaws of victory". He added: "This entire episode is becoming a shambles that reflects appallingly on this current House of Commons. There are now no good options." And Lib Dem Layla Moran, a backer of the pro-EU Best for Britain group, told The Sun: "The Prime Minister has failed the country. Three years on and we're back to square one. It's humiliating." She said Mrs May should "hang her head in shame" and called for an immediate delay to the Article 50 process... Brexit deal: final day of Lords debate | House of Lords

08:15:35
From 3pm: the House of Lords is debating the negotiated withdrawal agreement and framework for future relationship with the EU. Members have had their say over three days of debate in the chamber. Members are debating two connected motions. The first motion, put forward by the government, proposes that the House takes note of the negotiated withdrawal agreement and framework for the future relationship with the EU. The second motion, proposed by the opposition, notes that the House of Commons must determine the matter, but that the House of Lords emphatically rejects a no deal outcome to negotiations with the EU. The opposition motion also regrets that the withdrawal agreement and political declaration would do grave damage to the future economic prosperity, internal security and global influence of the UK. If the government motion passes, it will fulfil the House of Lords' obligations under the EU (Withdrawal) Act, section 13(1)c. If the opposition motion passes, it will not stop the House taking note of the agreement and fulfilling the obligation under the EU (Withdrawal) Act, but would provide an opportunity to put the opinion of the Lords on record. MPs vote on No Deal Brexit | 13.03.19 Live replay (part 2)

07:51:31
THERESA May was today hit by a Brexiteer rebellion as more than a dozen ministers teamed up to hijack the crunch vote on No Deal. The PM will tonight enrage many Tory MPs by backing a delay to our EU exit - rather than quitting without a deal on March 29. Even Mrs May's allies admitted the move will massively split the party - complaining: "We're totally f***ed." Hours before the vote, Mrs May was forced into a climbdown over a Brexiteer "Plan B" as ministers warned her they would quit if ordered to vote against it. As many as 15 members of the Government told the PM she must offer a free vote on an amendment which would see Britain strike a transition agreement with the EU even in a No Deal scenario. Pro-Brexit ministers are furious that Remainers have had their own way in Cabinet over recent months. The clash is a sign of how powerless Mrs May is to hold her warring Government together even as the clock ticks on the Brexit process. After last night's crushing defeat for the PM's Brexit deal, Parliament will today vote on whether or not to approve a No Deal exit in 16 days' time...
