Common stock valuation is the process of determining the value of a share of stock in a company. The holder of one share in a company that has one million shares outstanding is actually the owner of one-millionth of the company; the value of that share should represent that percentage of the company's worth. Stock valuation is typically done using one of two basic approaches. The first is based on looking at fundamentals such as discounted cash flow and earnings analysis. This is similar to bond valuation, but the cash flows are more difficult to predict making stocks a riskier investment. The second is by studying market conditions — supply of and demand for the stock and general trends of the financial markets.
