Why Private Investment Works & Govt. Investment Doesn't

05:54
From transportation to energy, and everything in between, should the government invest money in as many promising projects as possible? Or would that actually doom many of those ventures to failure? Burt Folsom, historian and professor at Hillsdale College, answers those questions by drawing on the fascinating history of the race to build America's railroads and airplanes. A company going bankrupt is not news. But Solyndra was not just any company. Its biggest “investor” was the federal government which had given it $500 million dollars. That was news. But, really, it shouldn’t have been. If history is any guide, it was quite predictable. The government is a very poor investor. And always has been. There are countless examples, but two should serve our purpose here. After the Civil War, American leaders were anxious to bind the country’s North, South, East, and West regions together with transcontinental railroads. Congress therefore gave massive federal aid to build the Union Pacific, the Central Pacific, and later the Northern Pacific Railroads. But all three of these roads had huge financial problems. The Union Pacific, for example, was mired in financial scandal from its inception, went bankrupt several times, and had to rebuild large sections of track thanks to shoddy construction practices. At that same time, James J. Hill, with no federal aid whatsoever, built a railroad from St. Paul to Seattle -- the Great Northern. How was Hill able to do with private funds what the Union Pacific failed to do with a gift of tens of millions of federal dollars? The starting point is incentives. The Union Pacific was paid by the government for each mile of road it built. It was in the railroad’s interest not to build the road straight. The more miles it took the UP to cross Nebraska, for example, the more money it made. Hill, by contrast, used his own capital. To make a profit, he had to build his Great Northern Railroad sturdy and straight. Hill’s company remained in business for almost a hundred years until 1970 when it merged with other railroads. The original Union Pacific, riddled with corruption and numerous other financial misdeeds, including the wholesale bribery of public officials, went broke within ten years. The story of the airplane is even more stark. By the opening of the twentieth century, the major nations of Europe and America were frantically at work trying to invent a flying machine. The first nation to do so would have a huge military and commercial advantage. In fact, leading American politicians of the day, such as Teddy Roosevelt, President William McKinley, and others argued that building an airplane was a national emergency. There was no time, they argued, to wait for private industry to get the job done. The government needed to pick the best aeronautics expert and give him the money he needed. That expert was Samuel Langley, the president of the prestigious Smithsonian Institution and holder of honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, Oxford, and Cambridge. Langley was already an accomplished inventor and he had written a highly praised book Experiments in Aerodynamics. Federal officials gave Langley funds for two trial flights. He immediately set to work. His theory was that his plane needed to be thrust into the air from a houseboat on the Potomac River. The big engine on the plane would then propel it through air for several minutes. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/why-private-investment-works-govt-investment-doesnt

A bond for the planet: 10 years of EIB's Climate Awareness Bonds

04:23
Back in 2007 the European Union launched its plan to fight climate change. At the EU bank, we needed an idea to mobilise the force of capital markets for a good end: raise money for green projects. This is how the world's first Green Bonds, which we called Climate Awareness Bonds, were born. "What Green Bonds bring to the market is transparency," says Philippe Zaouati, CEO of Mirova Responsible Investment in this video. Discover in images some of the projects financed and what difference Green Bonds can make for a healthier planet. Project Management Simplified: Learn The Fundamentals of PMI's Framework ✓

50:41
✅The best jobs no longer go to the best candidates. Times have changed. They now go to the people with the best strategies. We transformed over 5,000 careers. Join me at LIG and let me show you how yours will be the next career transformed; http://lig.academy Welcome to this week's episode where I make project management simple for you. To make it applicable to the majority of the audience, I am teaching Project Management Institute's (PMI) project management framework. ________________________________________________ Textbooks and frameworks are always boring. So, to make project management more interesting for you, I ran a project to demonstrate what steps to take and when. You won't regret spending 50 minutes to learn the basics of a wonderful practice called project management. You can also download all the templates I used in the session here (no need to register); https://thecareermastery.com/career-tips/project-management-simplified/ Although I strongly recommend you watch the entire session without skipping, for those of you who are just looking for snippets of information, you may find below the index of the video; 03:03 What is a project, program, and portfolio and how are they different from operations? 04:08 Project = Project Life Cycle + Project Management Process 04:43 Project Life Cycle 06:52 Process Groups 09:27 LIG, PMP certification or CAPM certification, which one is right for you? [Hint: I am biased!] 11:53 Process Groups - Initiation 13:06 Process Groups - Initiation - Project Charter 16:50 Process Groups - Initiation - Stakeholder Identification 18:17 Process Groups - Planning 20:30 Process Groups - Planning - Collecting Requirements 22:45 Process Groups - Planning - Defining the Scope 24:41 Process Groups - Planning - Scope Baseline 25:12 Process Groups - Planning - Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) 32:22 Process Groups - Planning - WBS Dictionary & Scope Creep 34:39 Process Groups - Planning - Time Management / Developing a Schedule 36:00 Process Groups - Planning - Gantt Chart 37:38 Process Groups - Planning - Fast Tracking a Project & Project Crashing 38:52 Process Groups - Planning - Cost Management 39:42 Process Groups - Planning - Budget development (for PMP or CAPM takers) 41:02 Process Groups - Executing 42:04 Process Groups - Executing - Gold Plating 43:16 Process Groups - Monitoring and Controlling 45:00 Process Groups - Monitoring and Controlling - Earned Value 47:57 Process Groups - Closing Process Group _______________________________________________________________ What is even a project? It definitely has a sexy tone to it right? Project… I just love the way it sounds. I wonder how cool it must sound in French. Proje… Well, project is a temporary endeavor to create a unique solution. Yeah that’s operations. No Well, the difference between a project and operations is fairly simple. A project ends. So, it’s temporary. You implement your project, you close it, you create a unique product/service/ or whatever outcome you wanted then you are done. Whereas in operations, it’s on-going and repetitive. You may have also heard about the terms program and portfolio. Let me just quickly explain them here. Program is multiple projects put together. Combined. And Portfolio is similarly. Multiple programs put together. So, it’s project, program, portfolio. Now before I go further, and dive deep. You need to understand something crucial. To run any project, you need 2 methodologies. The first one is a project life cycle and the second one is project management process. Most people confuse these 2. And if these are not clear, you can kiss the PMP certification goodbye. It’s absolutely amazing how many content creators in YouTube confuse these two. They are not interchangeable. You cannot afford to confuse a project life cycle with a project management process. Don’t worry I am going to make it very simple for you. Let’s start with Project Life Cycle. Project Life Cycle is unique to a project, to an industry, to your needs. It’s highly customizable. Think of it like this; a human development is a project. So, your life cycle is; 1) Conceiving 2) Birth 3) Childhood 4) Teenage hood. Teenage hood. Is that a word? Teenaging? 5) Adulthood 6) And death Easy stuff right? So, now if it was an IT project. I am not an IT but it would like something like this; High-level design Detailed Design Coding Testing Installation And Turnover This is project life cycle. The term cycle is a bit confusing here. I think. But who knows. This video covers; project management project management institute pmp project management professional certification project life cycle project management PMI managing a project project management fundamentals fundamentals of project management project management for beginners project management course

Philippine Economy Entering A "Golden Age"

04:50
The Philippine's Golden Age (ECONOMY & INFRASTRUCTURE) Build Build Build An official from the Asian Development Bank said the Philippine economy is going through a “golden age,” with the country’s growth seen outpacing its peers in the region on the back of strong investment and domestic consumption. ADB projects the Philippine Economy to grow by 6.8% for this year. Kelly Bird says Domestic demand & the government’s infrastructure program will fuel growth for the next few years. “The Philippine economic growth in 2017 was very strong. It was driven by robust domestic demand, we see this period as a golden age. It is the highest economic expansion in over 40 to 50 years.” “This growth will be sustained in 2018 and 2019.” “Along with domestic demand, the government’s infrastructure investments will fuel the country’s growth in the next few years, supported by a sound economic policy setting,” Bird said. “We expect this growth to further lift wage employment numbers, add to household incomes, and benefit more poor families across the archipelago.” The ADB said investments would be supported by large public infrastructure projects that include the Philippines’ first mass transit subway. “If we are experiencing a golden age of economic growth, this did not happen overnight. First of all, it took a lot of work,” Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said at the regional press launch of the Philippines’ hosting of this year’s 51st ADB Annual Meeting. Dominguez then gave credit to the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for surviving the 2008 global financial crisis, the deepest world recession for a generation. The finance chief also lauded Arroyo’s successor, Benigno Aquino III, for providing the country with “a lot of cash savings” that helped the current government. But “more importantly, the Filipinos elected a very dynamic leader in President Duterte, who has a vision for his country,” Dominguez said. In its Asian Development Outlook report, the ADB kept its 2018 growth forecast for the Philippines at 6.8 percent, faster than the 6.7 percent clip in 2017. For 2019, the Manila-based multilateral lender said the Philippine economy will likely accelerate to 6.9 percent. The ADB’s projections were below the government’s 7-8 percent target set for this year until the end of Duterte's term. The current government plans to spend more than P8 trillion on infrastructure to spur gross domestic product growth until 2022. “We have a very young and talented workforce. Our average age is 23, and these are people who have very good basic education, willing to work, and have the interest to be trained,” Dominguez said. “We also have very mild inflation worldwide for the last seven or eight years. So all of these factors came together,” he added. Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/InnovationPhilippinesOfficial/ For Business Inquiries: [email protected]

Investment Plan flagship project: Smart meters, UK

Europe needs investment to create jobs, make Euro more competitive, to strengthen the single market and support small businesses. A first major initiative of Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission is therefore the Investment plan for Europe. In one year time, it mobilised more than €100 billion of investment, with 249 approved transactions via the European Fund for Strategic Investment (EFSI). This money is aimed at projects that find it difficult to secure finance in the market. With more and more projects being chosen each month, the target of mobilising over €315 billion by 2018, is well underway. Here is Smart Meters' case. Infrastructure as an Asset Class

57:52
The World Bank, the G-20 and other multilateral institutions are encouraging new investments to address the need for improvements in global infrastructure. Traditionally, countries have relied on project finance to cover the cost of building roads, power grids, communications networks and water systems. However, a growing interest in reliable, long-term investments is drawing attention to alternatives, such as publicly traded funds and public-private partnerships, which can attract a wider variety of investors. The search is prompting some to ask if infrastructure will become the newest asset class. What are the challenges to creating bankable infrastructure projects around the world? And what are the best practices for accelerating growth of infrastructure investments as an asset class and reduce uncertainty regarding projects? Join us as leaders in infrastructure share their outlook and discuss where infrastructure fits in their portfolios.
