In principle, any object that produces sound can be considered a musical instrument—it is through purpose that the object becomes a musical instrument. The history of musical instruments dates to the beginnings of human culture. Early musical instruments may have been used for ritual, such as a trumpet to signal success on the hunt, or a drum in a religious ceremony. Cultures eventually developed composition and performance of melodies for entertainment. Musical instruments evolved in step with changing applications. The date and origin of the first device considered a musical instrument is disputed. The oldest object that some scholars refer to as a musical instrument, a simple flute, dates back as far as 67,000 years. Some consensus dates early flutes to about 37,000 years ago. However, most historians believe that determining a specific time of musical instrument invention is impossible due to the subjectivity of the definition and the relative instability of materials used to make them. Many early musical instruments were made from animal skins, bone, wood, and other non-durable materials. Musical instruments developed independently in many populated regions of the world. However, contact among civilizations caused rapid spread and adaptation of most instruments in places far from their origin. By the Middle Ages, instruments from Mesopotamia were in maritime Southeast Asia, and Europeans played instruments from North Africa. Development in the Americas occurred at a slower pace, but cultures of North, Central, and South America shared musical instruments. By 1400, musical instrument development slowed in many areas and was dominated by the Occident. Musical instrument classification is a discipline in its own right, and many systems of classification have been used over the years. Instruments can be classified by their effective range, their material composition, their size, etc. However, the most common academic method, Hornbostel-Sachs, uses the means by which they produce sound. The academic study of musical instruments is called organology.

Such an instrument sounds by outputting an electrical, electronic or digital audio signal that ultimately is plugged into a power amplifier which drives a loudspeaker, creating the sound heard by the performer and listener. An electronic instrument might include a user interface for controlling its sound, often by adjusting the pitch, frequency, or duration of each note. A common user interface is the musical keyboard, which functions similarly to the keyboard on an acoustic piano, except that with an electronic keyboard, the keyboard itself does not make any sound. An electronic keyboard sends a signal to a synth module, computer or other electronic or digital sound generator, which then creates a sound. However, it is increasingly common to separate user interface and sound-generating functions into a music controller (input device) and a music synthesizer, respectively, with the two devices communicating through a musical performance description language such as MIDI or Open Sound Control. All electronic musical instruments can be viewed as a subset of audio signal processing applications. Simple electronic musical instruments are sometimes called sound effects; the border between sound effects and actual musical instruments is often unclear. In the 2010s, electronic musical instruments are now widely used in most styles of music. In popular music styles such as electronic dance music, almost all of the instrument sounds used in recordings are electronic instruments (e.g., bass synth, synthesizer, drum machine). Development of new electronic musical instruments, controllers, and synthesizers continues to be a highly active and interdisciplinary field of research. Specialized conferences, notably the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression, have organized to report cutting-edge work, as well as to provide a showcase for artists who perform or create music with new electronic music instruments, controllers, and synthesizers.

The yalabajah is a musical instrument made out of bamboo. It's originally from eastern Nepal and belongs to the Limbu people ( the original natives), whose forefathers used to make them. It produces a drum-like noise like the Nepali "madal". Only one or two people from the tribe really know how to make a yalabajah. The instrument is very rare and unique. The video was filmed in Therpu village in Panchthar (eastern Nepal) and the person whom you see is a local teacher, Man Kumar Mabo, who learned how to make this instrument just by observing adults at an early age. Those memories and observations and allowed him to become a self-taught expert on how to craft the perfect yalabajah instrument. The process of making a yalabajah is stunning, and its music is magical! Don't forget to leave a like and subscribe to our channel for more interesting videos! List of national instruments (music) | Wikipedia audio article
This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: List of national instruments (music) Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. You can find other Wikipedia audio articles too at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuKfABj2eGyjH3ntPxp4YeQ You can upload your own Wikipedia articles through: https://github.com/nodef/wikipedia-tts "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." - Socrates SUMMARY ======= This list contains musical instruments of symbolic or cultural importance within a nation, state, ethnicity, tribe or other group of people. In some cases, national instruments remain in wide use within the nation (such as the Puerto Rican cuatro), but in others, their importance is primarily symbolic (such as the Welsh triple harp). Danish ethnologist Lisbet Torp has concluded that some national instrument traditions, such as the Finnish kantele, are invented, pointing to the "influence of intellectuals and nationalists in the nationwide promotion of selected musical instruments as a vehicle for nationalistic ideas". Governments do not generally officially recognize national instruments; the only exceptions are the Paraguayan harp, the Japanese koto and the Trinidadian steelpan. This list compiles instruments that have been alleged to be a national instrument by any of a variety of sources, and an instrument's presence on the list does not indicate that its status as a national instrument is indisputable, only that its status has been credibly argued. Each instrument on this list has a Hornbostel-Sachs number immediately below it. This number indicates the instrument's classification within the Hornbostel-Sachs system (H-S), which organizes instruments numerically based on the manner in which they produce sound.Images and recordings are supplied where available; note that there are often variations within a national musical tradition, and thus the images and recordings may not be accurate in depicting the entire spectrum of the given nation's music, and that some images and recordings may be taken from a region outside the core of the national instrument's home when such distinctions have little relevance to the information present in the image and recordings. A number of countries have more than one instrument listed, each having been described as a national instrument, not usually by the same source; neither the presence of multiple entries for one nation, nor for multiple nations for one instrument, on this list is reflective of active dispute in any instance. Alternative names and spellings are given. These mostly come from alternative spellings within English or alternative methods of transliterating from a foreign language to English, such as the Chinese yangqin, also transliterated yang ch'in and yang qin. Others reflect regions or subcultures within a given nation, such as the Australian didgeridoo which is or has been called didjeridu, yidaki, yiraki, magu, kanbi and ihambilbilg in various Australian Aboriginal languages. All non-English words are italicized.

Rig Rundown - Dave Cobb
Article & photos: http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/25095-rig-rundown-dave-cobb Dave Cobb had a big year in 2015, having won Grammy awards for producing Chris Stapleton’s Traveller and Jason Isbell’s Something More Than Free. Cobb has moved his studio to the legendary RCA Studio A, which was opened by Chet Atkins in 1965, and has since produced projects for Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown, and a ton of other top-billing acts. Between sessions, Cobb took PG on a gear tour of his studio where we were treated to a bevy of vintage beauties. Cobb keeps a ton of vintage gear handy for anybody recording in his studio. His arsenal of guitars includes this 1952 goldtop Les Paul. At some point it was converted to a ’57 with a neck reset, stop tailpiece, and vintage PAF pickups. Originally, Cobb thought the red finish on this 1966 Fender Esquire was the work of an inexperienced DIY-er, but turns out that what’s left of the Fiesta Red was the original finish. India’s first 3D Printed Musical Instruments developed & tested by Divide by Zero Technologies
Paresh Vijay (drummer/percussionist) and Manroop Manjunath (vocalist) from CombustUs – a Mumbai-based experimental Psychedelic rock band discusses the possibility playing 3D printed musical instruments. All the instruments are developed using Divide By Zero Technologies home-grown technology. So far this technology has been in automotive and other industries. However, 3D printed musical instruments being developed and played was unheard of. In the interview, the music band also mentioned that Divide By Zero Technologies was able to print a range of instruments such an electric guitar, a djembe (African drums), a kanjeera, an egg shaker, a Chinese ocarina called Xun and Ukulele. The music band also talks about the tonal similarities of all the 3D printed musical instruments. CombustUs and Team Divide By Zero Technologies plan to take this collaboration ahead by working closely in the near future. Electric musical instruments are an example of electric music technology. It is also known as an amplified musical instrument due to the common utilization of an electronic instrument amplifier to project the intended sound as determined by electric signals from the instrument. Two common types of instrument amplifiers are the guitar amplifier and the bass amplifier. This is not the same as an electronic musical instrument, like a synthesizer, which uses entirely electronic means to both create and control sound. Most electric or amplified musical instruments are electric versions of chordophones (including pianos, guitars and violins). Some of the most commonly used electric instruments are electric guitar, electric bass and electric piano. Other electric instruments include the varitone, an amplified saxophone (part of the aerophone family) that was first introduced by The Selmer Company in 1965; and the Hammond organ which uses tonewheels to generate electric sound.

What is more, Mozart is a supreme master of the art of instrumentation. Yet here we have a work, perfectly suited to winds, in a new arrangement. Well, the diverse nature of the piece – its many movements and moods – make it a suitable candidate for a more flexible approach. It’s even possible to argue that the more operatic character of several movements, such as the Romanze, can be more vividly conveyed and appreciated when heard with an ensemble of string players. Tracklist: 00:00:00 Serenade No. 10 in B-Flat Major, K. 361 “Gran Partita”: I. Largo - Allegro molto (Arr. Mordechai Rechtmann) 00:09:59 Serenade No. 10 in B-Flat Major, K. 361 “Gran Partita”: II. Rig Rundown - Modest Mouse's Jim Fairchild
Article and photos: http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/24540-rig-rundown-modest-mouses-jim-fairchild In 2005, Jim Fairchild began working with Modest Mouse, a band he’d come to know while on tour with his own band, Grandaddy. Fairchild not only tours with the band but participated in the writing and recording of the band’s 2015 album, Strangers to Ourselves. Before their July 2016 gig in Nashville, Jim met with PG in his dressing room to take us through his Fender-heavy gear. Jim Fairchild is a long-time Fender fan and still tours with the first good Strat he ever owned. This ’95 Strat boasts a matching headstock along with Lollar Vintage Blackface pickups. (He carries a 2013 American Standard Strat with the same Lollar pickups as a backup.) To get a beefy humbucker tone, Fairchild plays his Epiphone Sheraton loaded with Seth Lover pickups.
