Economics of International Trade Law
BOOK REVIEW ECONOMICS OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE LAW Volumes I and II Edited by Alan O. Sykes Edward Elgar Publishing Limited ISBN: 978 1 84542 650 7 www.e-elgar.com ECONOMIC APPROACHES TO INTERNATIONAL TRADE LAW DISCUSSED IN 47 LEARNED ARTICLES An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers Published as part of the 'Economic Approaches to Law' series from Edward Elgar Publishing Limited, this thought-provoking two-volume work of reference places a wealth of high quality, original academic research on the economics of international trade law literally at your fingertips, so you don't have to plough through a daunting list of academic journals to access it. Economists and lawyers alike will find the contents of these hardback volumes impressive, incorporating, as they do, the no less than 47 essays and articles on this specific subject by top academics and published in an array of highly regarded professional and academic journals worldwide. Like other books in this series, this is a valuable reference source in the area of law and economics, international trade of course being one of the many areas where law and economics are inextricably linked. Writing in the introduction, editor Professor Sykes of the New York University School of Law, points out that the papers chosen for inclusion in this text all impact directly on law and legal institutions and additionally, are regarded as being pivotal in the development of the modern economic theory of trade agreements, with the emphasis throughout being theoretical rather than empirical. The topics covered are too numerous to mention here but suffice to say that the papers presented within these two volumes are logically grouped under a total of eight major categories starting with the basic theory of trade agreements and subsequently covering such areas as most-favoured nation obligation, dispute resolution, safeguard measures, subsidies and countervailing measures, anti-dumping measures and international trade and domestic regulation. Finally, Part V of Volume II deals, in two relatively recent articles, with developing countries in the WTO. Certainly, the work offers much to intrigue. Take the section on anti-dumping, for example, which reveals the effects of environmental regulation (or lack of it) on international trade and vice versa. 'Why Are So Many Antidumping Petitions Withdrawn?' asks one rather eye-catching title, which refers to cases that are 'settled' before duties can be imposed. If you're a practitioner, economic adviser, or academic, we would say you'd do well to add this useful and extensive two-volume set to your professional library post haste.

The trade routes that threaten biodiversity
One of the major threats to biodiversity worldwide is international trade. The production of goods for export often involves logging, mining, fishing or other activities that can damage natural habitats. To figure out where the drive for these goods is coming from, researchers traced the production of goods in one country to consumers in another. The maps in this video show how consumers in the US and Japan are endangering animal species in 'threat hotspots' around the world. Expert Schools James O'Brien On Brexit With Evidence Based Facts
Expert Schools James O'Brien On Brexit With Evidence Based Facts. An expert in international trade educated James O'Brien on what will happen after Britain leaves the European Union. Jason Hunter has negotiated billions of pounds-worth of deals both inside and outside the European Union. And he told James what will happen in the case of a no-deal Brexit - and spoiler alert, it doesn't look good. Speaking about Article 50, Jason said: "There's no part of it that says we can get a deal? None of it. We leave. There is no deal to be done, there never was. "It says the treaties will cease to apply. "Once this stops, we can then begin to negotiate our way back in to all of these things. "The EU are treating this as a legal, technical process. The UK have been playing silly political games, thinking that it's a negotiation. And it isn't." He then went on to give his expertise on manufacturing, World Trade Organisation tariffs and international trade negotiations. Afterwards, James said: "I'm supposed to school callers on Brexit. I'm not supposed to get schooled by them." Uk Politics World News GE2018 Brexit G20 OJW Donations Welcome. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=DPK4PYVL8ZSZN

No harm in looking. * Willing to do a special video list for (insert band, actor, etc.) if you have something on my ISO (not being mean, but it takes time to clear my space, film, and edit; I just want us to have a good chance of a trade before investing that time) * Trader with lower feedback/confirmation videos sends first

America's $60 Billion Plan to Counter China Overseas
A new front in the US-China trade war has opened up and that’s foreign investment. In the beginning of October, President Trump signed the Better Utilization of Investments Leading to Development, or BUILD Act. It combines several smaller government agencies into the new US International Development Finance Corporation, or IDFC with 60 billion dollars to invest in developing nations around the world—mostly in Africa. The goal is to counter Chinese investment in Chinese leader Xi Jinping's Belt and Road Initiative. America Uncovered relies on viewer support. Mathur, Member of Parliament) in 1965. At present Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under Ministry of Commerce, is the cadre controlling authority of the ITS. DGFT has 38 regional offices across India, and plays a significant role in promoting India's international trade with its policy formulation and implementation. The Department of commerce is headed by a Secretary who is assisted by a Special Secretary & Financial Adviser, three Additional Secretaries, thirteen Joint Secretaries and Joint Secretary level officers and a number of other senior officers. Keeping in view the large increase in workload in matters related to World Trade Organization (WTO), Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs), free trade agreements (FTAs), Special Economic Zones (SEZs), joint study groups (JSGs) etc., two posts each of Joint Secretaries and Directors were created in the Department during 2008-09. The Department is functionally organized into the following nine Divisions: International Trade Policy Division Foreign Trade Territorial Division Export Products Division Export Industries Division Export Services Division Economic Division Administration & General Service Division Finance Division Supply Division

Handbook on the Law of Cultural Heritage and International Trade
BOOK REVIEW HANDBOOK ON THE LAW OF CULTURAL HERITAGE AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE Edited by James A.R. Nafziger and Robert Kirkwood Paterson ISBN: 978 1 78100 733 4 Research Handbooks on Globalisation and the Law EDWARD ELGAR PUBLISHING LTD www.e-elgar.com A NEW AND IMPORTANT COMPILATION OF ORIGINAL WRITINGS ON CULTURAL HERITAGE LAW An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers This recent publication from Edward Elgar presents an excellent collection of highly detailed essays to conclude a project from the Committee of Cultural Heritage Law of the International Law Association. A team of no less than twenty-six authors from almost twenty different jurisdictions worldwide have contributed. Almost literally, you are offered a world of insights into the complexities of the law of cultural heritage and international trade. The learned editors, Professor Nafziger of the Willamette University College of Law in Oregon and Professor Paterson of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver -- have produced an important research resource. Cultural heritage law, they say is 'a young and exciting field of research and practice' which has evolved mainly in the last half century in largely response to the frequent and widespread looting and trafficking of valuable art, artefacts and other cultural material. The focus, they say, is not merely on ownership. The emphasis in much wider, in that the book examines domestic, regional and international law that encompasses property issues that pertain to absolutely anything of value, whether on land, underground, underwater, or even in outer space. With all this in mind, the editors' explanatory introduction to the concept of cultural heritage law is especially well worth reading. Here, the term 'cultural heritage', is closely defined. An important distinction is drawn between 'property' which connotes ownership and its related rights and 'heritage' which doesn't, or doesn't necessarily. The term 'cultural' does have various connotations, but in general, it refers to 'the myriad manifestations of culture that human beings have inherited from their forebears.' Numerous problems relating to heritage (which are virtually insoluble) have emerged fairly recently in the wake of war, conflict and revolution; from stolen art hoarded by the Nazis, to the nationalization of private property during the Soviet Union and much, much more besides. The subject matter of the book is consequently wide ranging. Fundamentally it pivots around the topic of international trade, with emphasis on a number of key legal instruments, including GATT -- the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the 1970 UNESCO Convention, which has established procedures for registering culturally important objects and archives. Overall, the articles generally tend to emphasize the cultural heritage of human kind in general, rather than, in many cases, specific territorial claims. With its copious footnoting and extensive index, the book emerges as an important, readable, and authoritative work of reference for researchers and practitioners involved in this growing and often sensitive and controversial area of law. If you are a comparative lawyer, or involved in global business, you need this book. The publication date is 2014.

China's Currency Manipulation is Harming America. Fair Trade Would Restore US Jobs and Prosperity
From http://VideoThink.net : US-China trade should be mutually beneficial. Unfortunately, China has undervalued its currency against the US dollar, to gain an unfair advantage in world trade. It's non-tariff barriers limit imports from the USA. And it has obstructed investment by foreign companies in China. Since entering the World Trade Organization in 2001, China has abused free trade with a mercantilist trade strategy that has severely damaged the economies of the USA, Europe, and nations around the world. Yet under both President Obama and President Bush, the United States Treasury Department has consistently refused to name China as a currency manipulator. This has prevented Congress from imposing import duties on Chinese goods. The result has been enormous trade deficits for the USA, huge job losses and chronic unemployment, a reduction in USA government tax revenues, and higher social safety net payments. This has worsened the stubborn US budget deficits and the ballooning national debt. Meanwhile, the Chinese economy has grown rapidly, year after year. In manipulating the renminbi / yuan, China has amassed staggering foreign currency reserves and a massive hoard of US Treasury bonds. It may be trying to hide these in Belgium's EuroClear bank, to disguise its currency manipulation. US Corporations have contributed to this problem by relocating their manufacturing facilities to China, to exploit China's cheap labor. This has enriched US corporations with soaring profits, while impoverishing many Americans who are unemployed or under-employed. China is now using its export wealth to acquire strategic natural resource and high tech industries in the USA, Europe, and worldwide. The long-term consequences of China's currency war for the USA could be very serious, and all Americans should be very concerned. Clarification: By 2013, China's money supply was 9 times as large as it was in 2000. That translates to 800% growth. In comparison, the US money supply only doubled. Can the €URO surpass the DOLLAR? - VisualPolitik EN
The Euro is a strange animal amont the currencies. It does not represent a single country but several of them instead: all the members of the so-called Eurozone. So different economies have made so many famous economist such as Milton Friedman or George Soros have severe concerns about the future of this currency. During the financial crisis of 2009, many suggested the possibility of two different euros: a strong one for the rich EU countries and a weaker one for the poor, southern ones. Nonetheless, far from having disappeared, the Euro is one of the most stable and most commonly used currencies in the world. 30% of the international trade is done with it. And the European Central Bank has demonstrated to be as responsible as the American Federal Reserve But… Could the EUR substitute the USD as a reserve currency? How to Fight Global Poverty - Learn Liberty
CORRECTION: At 0:16, Dr. Davies says "In 1990, the United Nations set very ambitious Millennium Development Goals." The Millennium Development Goals were set in the year 2000; several of these goals use 1990 as a starting point. Learn More: https://www.learnliberty.org/ Have you heard the news? The number of people living in abject poverty—defined as living on less than $1.25 per day—has been halved since 1990. How did that happen? Prof. Stephen Davies explains that extreme poverty has been on the decline in part because two of the world's most populous countries, China and India, have embarked on a path of economic liberalization and development over the past two to three decades. As more countries have embraced free trade and market-friendly policies, we have seen encouraging news of poverty reductions and greater access to clean drinking water. If such policies continue, Prof. Davies says, it's not out of the question for extreme poverty to be eradicated in the foreseeable future. These gains are likely to be lost, however, if we make poor economic decisions that take us back toward protectionism and economic controls. With good economic policies and free markets, we can help many of the poorest people in the world. Ron Paul @ Google - US foreign policy and trade - part 3
2008 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul in discussion with Google executive Elliot Schrage as part of the company's [email protected] series. http://youtube.com/watch?v=yCM_wQy4YVg For more about Ron Paul, articles and videos, visit: http://hempsavetheworld.wordpress.com IN THIS VIDEO: Ron Paul explains his positions and views on trade as the means to good foreign relations. He believes the government should not interfere in any social contracts - it's responsibility instead is only to protect people and their contracts. Part 3: How should US foreign relationships be? Ron Paul: We should permit trade - as fast as possible. If it's possible I want low tariffs. Tariffs are taxes and it doesn't tax the wealthy, it taxes the poor person who would like to buy cheap products. Why were you opposed to NAFTA? Ron Paul: Because it's government management of trade for special interests. It's not really free trade. So a company like Google - it going to do business in China - you think it was a good thing for us to begin operations... Ron Paul: That's right. That's your right given by the Constitution and your right in a free society. Your contract is your business [not the government's]. It's the government's responsibility to protect you if someone violates that contract. So clearly then, your position on issues like gay marriage, you're supportive of that? Ron Paul: I'm supportive of all voluntary associations and people can call it whatever they want. Prostitution...? I think that's been around a long time and I'm sure they haven't been able to stamp that out. Again, consistent with the libertarian philosophy: what people do on their own time, so long as it doesn't hurt other people... Ron Paul: That's the rule. === The government today does not simply protect our contracts as it is supposed to - it regulates the contracts and breaks the rules of the free-trade market by not following the rules of contract. The government should not be making legislation to contraol the ways of the free market. The economy will take care of itself. Groups (such as consumer reports) form themselves without the need of legislation. If we didn't depend on the government to take care of us, we would have better consumer protection.
