Eruption from submarine volcano creates new island in the South Pacific

05:17
The volcanic island formed in January 2015 in between two older islands known as Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha'apai. It's thought the new island might give NASA scientists clues about how volcanic landscapes interacted with water on ancient Mars. The island, hasn't been officially named, but is known as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai or HTHH. It is covered in black gravel and light-colored clay mud rather than sand. Vegetation is springing up and a barn owl lives there.Dan Slayback (bottom right) of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, visited the island in October 2018. Episode 2 of 5 Check us out on iTunes! http://testtube.com/podcast Please Subscribe! http://testu.be/1FjtHn5 Have you ever wondered why some volcanoes erupt viciously and shoot hot ash and lava miles into the air while some just slowly ooze out of the top and sides? + + + + + + + + Previous Episode: Why Does Earth Have Volcanoes?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVHdaFaU3c4&index=1&list=PLwwOk5fvpuuKyfaTO3IMv9GGFm9eCHZtT + + + + + + + + Sources: Volcano World: Eruption Styles: http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/eruption-styles “Scientists realized long ago that no two volcanoes erupt the same. Some, like Mount St. Helens, burst violently and send ash and gas high into the air. Others, like Kilauea in Hawaii, ooze red hot lava which runs like maple syrup down the slope of the volcano." Types of Volcanic Eruptions: http://geology.com/volcanoes/types-of-volcanic-eruptions/ “The most common type of volcanic eruption occurs when magma (the term for lava when it is below the Earth's surface) is released from a volcanic vent." What Causes A Volcano To Erupt And How Do Scientists Predict Eruptions?: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-causes-a-volcano-to/ “When a part of the earth's upper mantle or lower crust melts, magma forms. A volcano is essentially an opening or a vent through which this magma and the dissolved gases it contains are discharged." Volcanoes, Magma, And Volcanic Eruptions: http://www.tulane.edu/~sanelson/Natural_Disasters/volcan&magma.htm “Since volcanic eruptions are caused by magma (a mixture of liquid rock, crystals, and dissolved gas) expelled onto the Earth's surface, we must first discuss the characteristics of magma and how magmas form in the Earth." Mount St. Helens Eruption: Facts & Information: http://www.livescience.com/27553-mount-st-helens-eruption.html “Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980. The volcano, located in southwestern Washington, used to be a beautiful symmetrical cone about 9,600 feet (3,000 meters) above sea level." Predicting And Preparing For Volcanoes: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/geography/natural_hazards/managing_hazards_rev1.shtml “Unfortunately volcanic eruptions and earthquakes cannot be prevented. Managing hazards such as earthquakes and volcanoes can be done by: prediction and preparation." Can We Predict Eruptions?: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/vesuvius/predict.html “In a word, yes. But that assertion, like saying we can predict the weather, bears significant caveats." Scientists Develop A New Method For Predicting Volcanic Eruptions: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/10/151028084917.htm “Researchers from the Department of Earth Sciences at Royal Holloway, University of London, have developed a new method which could more accurately determine the conditions needed for a volcano to erupt." + + + + + + + + TestTube Plus is built for enthusiastic science fans seeking out comprehensive conversations on the geeky topics they love. 6 types of volcanoes, fissure volcano, shield volcano, volcanic dome, cinder cone volcano, stratovolcano, caldera volcano game: http://www.purposegames.com/game/types-of-volcano-game Convergent plate boundaries Main article: Convergent boundary Subduction zones are places where two plates, usually an oceanic plate and a continental plate, collide. In this case, the oceanic plate subducts, or submerges under the continental plate forming a deep ocean trench just offshore. In a process called flux melting, water released from the subducting plate lowers the melting temperature of the overlying mantle wedge, creating magma. This magma tends to be very viscous due to its high silica content, so often does not reach the surface and cools at depth. When it does reach the surface, a volcano is formed. Typical examples for this kind of volcano are Mount Etna and the volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire. "Hotspots" Main article: Hotspot (geology) "Hotspots" is the name given to volcanic provinces postulated to be formed by mantle plumes. These are postulated to comprise columns of hot material that rise from the core-mantle boundary. They are suggested to be hot, causing large-volume melting, and to be fixed in space. Because the tectonic plates move across them, each volcano becomes dormant after a while and a new volcano is then formed as the plate shifts over the postulated plume. The Hawaiian Islands have been suggested to have been formed in such a manner, as well as the Snake River Plain, with the Yellowstone Caldera being the part of the North American plate currently above the hot spot. This theory is currently under criticism, however.[1] Volcanic features Lakagigar fissure vent in Iceland, source of the major world climate alteration of 1783--84. Skjaldbreiður, a shield volcano whose name means "broad shield" The most common perception of a volcano is of a conical mountain, spewing lava and poisonous gases from a crater at its summit. This describes just one of many types of volcano, and the features of volcanoes are much more complicated. The structure and behavior of volcanoes depends on a number of factors. Some volcanoes have rugged peaks formed by lava domes rather than a summit crater, whereas others present landscape features such as massive plateaus. Vents that issue volcanic material (lava, which is what magma is called once it has esc\a vent of an igneous volcano. Fissure vents Main article: Fissure vent Volcanic fissure vents are flat, linear cracks through which lava emerges. Shield volcanoes Main article: Shield volcano Shield volcanoes, so named for their broad, shield-like profiles, are formed by the eruption of low-viscosity lava that can flow a great distance from a vent. They generally do not explode catastrophically. Since low-viscosity magma is typically low in silica, shield volcanoes are more common in oceanic than continental settings. The Hawaiian volcanic chain is a series of uptions of mostly small pieces of scoria and pyroclastics (both resemble cinders, hence the name of this volcano type) that build up around the vent. These can be relatively short-lived eruptions that produce a cone-shaped hill perhaps 30 to 400 meters high. Most cinder cones erupt only once. Cinder cones may form as flank vents on larger 3. Volcano Eruption

02:54
Volcano eruptions (or volcanic eruption) is a phenomenon in which lava, dust, rocks, and gas compounds are ejected from the Earth's interior through a volcano. Volcano eruptions affects the ecology and destroys the plants and animals in that area. This video explains the complete process and causes of volcanic eruption along with its after-effects. It is also explained that apart from land and sea, volcano eruption can also occur underwater and the erupted often lava solidifies to form islands above it. VOLCANO ERUPTION game UNBOXING. Volcano Eruption game | Beau's Toy Farm

03:39
SUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/JoinTheFARM VOLCANO ERUPTION game UNBOXING takes a look at the contents of this toy manufactured by Grafix. It's part of the "Weird Science" series of science experiments for children. This morning we're unboxing "Volcano Eruption" which is a weird science experiment and look... It REALLY erupts - says so on the box! It's made by Grafix and the only thing extra you need are normal household malt vinegar and newspaper, because it does get very messy. We will be carrying out the experiment and review in the next video where Beau himself makes his very first channel appearance and will be erupting the Volcano (about time he did, this is his channel after all!). Beau is hilarious, so don't miss the next video whatever you do, I even provide a link here! Right, so inside the box there's a clear plastic carton and inside that contains all the contents. On top of the carton is the included volcanic card play scene. It has two flaps that open out so it stands up. The idea is that you can put this behind the volcano and then video the volcano erupting in front of it for maximum effect. You get a pair of clear plastic goggles. In the next video you will see why these are needed! You get a lot of bicarbonate of soda powder... Enough in here for erupting the volcano a dozen times. The plastic bag leaked for us, fortunately it's inside another resealable plastic bag. Also in the box is some red dye. It's used to mix with the vinegar to give it that distinctive lava colouring. It's actually a powder, not a liquid as you will see. Then there's the volcano mountain itself made out of brown plastic. There's a pin hole in the screw top where the lava escapes from. This screws off and there's a larger hole for pouring in the vinegar, the dye powder and finally the soda powder. They give you two funnels which is generous I have to say. One of them is to pour in the vinegar, the other is for the soda powder. You also get these plastic gloves, which do come in handy as the experiment can get quite messy. Finally, they also give you a nice colourful instruction booklet which include pictures of what to do and what not to do! Although it does say aged 8+ on the box, Beau is just 5-years-old and as you will see, he demonstrates the experiment perfectly! Remember though that adult supervision at all times is most definitely recommended! And that's about it for the unboxing of Volcano Eruption. It's a very reasonably priced item and enjoyable to do the experiments, except for the mess, which is tremendous as you will see by clicking on this link and watching Beau do his thing! Interesting article on real volcanic eruptions and types of them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Types_of_volcanic_eruptions Where you can buy this game on Amazon, for the crazy price of under £5 !! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Grafix-Weird-Science-Volcano-Eruption/dp/B009RNP7ZE It's just £4 in Tesco here: http://www.tesco.com/direct/grafix-weird-science-volcano-eruption/193-9193.prd Interestingly, the recommended age on the new boxes is 5+ You can also buy it in the Entertainer for £4 here: http://www.thetoyshop.com/Electronic-and-educational-toys/Science-and-nature/Weird-Science-Volcano-Eruption/p/489278 In other countries, a volcanic eruption is known as: Vulkansatz (German) Vulkaanpakket (Dutch) Equiper le Volcan (France) http://www.transcendentfilms.com http://www.kriskoster.com About Beau’s Toy Farm Beau's Toy Farm is a toy's best friend! Volcano Eruption in Iceland 2014! Holuhraun / Bardarbunga Volcano - What's On in Iceland

03:01
In September 2014 What's On (http://www.whatson.is) travelled to the eruption site at Holuhraun, north of Bardarbunga in the middle of Iceland with the purpose of getting amazing footage and writing about the experience. This video includes footage from air, shot during a scenic flight a few days before driving to the roots of the eruption. This is an unsafe area, inaccessible to the general public and we took every precaution necessary, travelled with seasoned experts and had appropriate permits for everything. A volcanic eruption is a magnificent thing to see, but has to be respected to full extent. Visit http://www.whatson.is for our full coverage of the 2014 eruption in Iceland, to book a Volcano Sightseeing tour, as well as loads of interesting articles and other stuff. Dramatic footage of Guatemala's Volcano of Fire erupting

00:52
Emergency crews (right) worked through the debris on smouldering terrain still hot enough to melt shoe soles a day after Guatemala's Volcano of Fire exploded in a hail of ash, smoke and molten rock. Bodies were coated with thick ash (inset) and rescuers were forced to use sledgehammers to break through the roofs of houses buried in debris up to their rooflines. It came after searing flows of lava, ash and rock mixed with water and debris gushed down the volcano's flanks, blocking roads and burning homes. The fast-moving pyroclastic flows overtook people in homes and streets with temperatures reaching as high as 700C (1,300F). Fire was still too hot in many places to pull out bodies so thickly coated with ash that they looked like statues. The death toll has reached 69, but officials said just 17 had been identified so far because the intense heat of the volcanic debris flows left most bodies unrecognisable. Thousands gathered to bury the dead last night (left). Russian Volcano First Major Eruption in 600 Years Following Mini Ice Age Cycles (339)

05:50
Unexpected eruption in the southern tip of Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia of the Kambalny Volcano. Ash already up above 26,000 feet and the eruption continues. This follows the pattern of increased volcanism as the Earth descends into a grand solar minimum. Earth's volcanoes occur because its crust is broken into 17 major, rigid tectonic plates that float on a hotter, softer layer in its mantle. Therefore, on Earth, volcanoes are generally found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging, and most are found underwater. For example, a mid-oceanic ridge, such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has volcanoes caused by divergent tectonic plates whereas the Pacific Ring of Fire has volcanoes caused by convergent tectonic plates. Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching and thinning of the crust's plates, e.g., in the East African Rift and the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field and Rio Grande Rift in North America. This type of volcanism falls under the umbrella of "plate hypothesis" volcanism. Volcanism away from plate boundaries has also been explained as mantle plumes. These so-called "hotspots", for example Hawaii, are postulated to arise from upwelling diapirs with magma from the core–mantle boundary, 3,000 km deep in the Earth. Volcanoes are usually not created where two tectonic plates slide past one another. Erupting volcanoes can pose many hazards, not only in the immediate vicinity of the eruption. One such hazard is that volcanic ash can be a threat to aircraft, in particular those with jet engines where ash particles can be melted by the high operating temperature; the melted particles then adhere to the turbine blades and alter their shape, disrupting the operation of the turbine. Large eruptions can affect temperature as ash and droplets of sulfuric acid obscure the sun and cool the Earth's lower atmosphere (or troposphere); however, they also absorb heat radiated from the Earth, thereby warming the upper atmosphere (or stratosphere). Historically, volcanic winters have caused catastrophic famines.

Yellowstone Volcano Eruption DISCOVERY: GSM OBSERVATIONS

07:26
Here we have an article from express.co.uk, they are known to sensationalize headlines and skew perception. Let’s take a look at this article https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/934844/yellowstone-volcano-eruption-2018-magma-plume-supervolcano-news-latest Yellowstone volcano eruption DISCOVERY: Magma plume from MEXICO found under supervolcano YELLOWSTONE National Park researchers have made a shock discovery of a magma plume beneath the park that runs all the way from Mexico heightening fears the supervolcano is about to blow Stephen Grand and Peter Nelson, from the University of Texas, believe they have discovered a column of hot volcanic ash, which is a mixture of particles and gas emitted by an eruption. The plume, which stretches from the core-mantle boundary beneath the park could be the answer to increased volcanic activity at Yellowstone. It comes after experts at Yellowstone National Park claim to have seen the world’s largest geyser erupt on the evening of Thursday, March 15. Stemboat facts: Steamboat's major eruptions last from 3 to 40 minutes, and are followed by powerful jets of steam. Steamboat does not erupt on a predictable schedule, with recorded intervals between major eruptions ranging from four days to fifty years. The geyser was dormant from 1911 to 1961. Minor eruptions of 10 to 15 feet (3–5 m) are much more frequent. After an eruption, the geyser often vents large amounts of steam for up to 48 hours.[4] Cistern Spring, located nearby, will drain completely during a major eruption of the geyser; the spring refills within a few days. he last ten major eruptions were on the following dates:[9] May 2, 2000 April 26, 2002 September 13, 2002 March 26, 2003 April 27, 2003 October 22, 2003 May 23, 2005 July 31, 2013 September 3, 2014 March 15, 2018 This activity has sparked fears among volcano watchers that the supervolcano, located about 15 miles south of the Steamboat Geyser, is due to erupt. The article then states: And to make the situation even more terrifying, there has been 11 earthquakes in the region since the geysers blew – more evidence of the subsurface action in the magma pits. Now the title alone is alarming it obviously did its job because many people are clicking on it and sharing it through out social media. So lets take a look at the paper they are referencing on Nature.com, Essentially they are dissecting how the volcano originally formed in that particular location. They conclude by suggesting that there is likely a thin plume stretching from the core-mantle boundary beneath the park and that it is responsible for the volcanism seen at Yellowstone. But they also acknowledge that more research is required because there are still questions regarding how Yellowstone exists in its current location. They theorize that it is possible because the plume is held steady by a part of the Pacific large low-shear-velocity province. They finish by suggesting that current methods used by other researchers to study plumes may not be adequate because global tomography is not capable of capturing thin thermal plumes such as the one they suggest lies beneath Yellowstone. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-018-0075-y Last November a similar finding made headlines when NASA DISCOVERed a MANTLE PLUME ALMOST AS HOT AS YELLOWSTONE SUPERVOLCANO THAT'S MELTING ANTARCTICA FROM BELOW That team concluded the Marie Byrd Land mantle plume formed 50-110 million years ago—long before the land above was hidden by ice. Heat from it, they say, has an “important local impact” on the ice sheet—and understanding these processes will allow researchers to work out what will happen to it in the future. http://www.newsweek.com/antarctica-melting-below-mantle-plume-almost-hot-yellowstone-supervolcano-705086 As you can see with the media it sometimes is hard to discern and look at things objectively. We all must slow down, zoom out and be objective with out jumping to conclusions. Victims of the volcano eruption in Guatemala are underway

01:42
The death toll from Guatemala's volcanic explosion has risen to 38 as a hot flow of mud, ash and gas swept down from Guatemala's Fuego volcano on Monday following a new explosion in the morning. The second explosion hindered rescue efforts today as disaster workers pulled bodies from the brown sludge that engulfed the village of El Rodeo, after the volcano near Guatemala City exploded in a fiery display of ash and lava on Sunday. The death toll rose from 25 on Sunday but it was unclear whether more bodies had been found or whether more people died in Monday's eruption and pyroclastic flow, as rigid bodies were found caked in ash (top right). Pictured left: cars and vehicles damaged by the eruption; bottom right: the volcano in eruption seen from Alotenango. Russia's Karymsky Volcano Erupts - Amazing Aerial Footage

01:49
Amazing aerial footage of Russia's Karymsky Volcano, Kamchatka. A Volcanic Ash Advisory has been issued for the region. Twenty-seven-year-old Aleksandr Ostrowski, is a local tour guide. "I filmed this eruption during a helicopter ride on the way to the Valley of Geysers," he said. "This eruption could be described as a vulcanian eruption," he added. Vulcanian eruptions occur when magma forms beneath the surface of a volcano, which is then hurled into the air by more magma accumulating below. Karymsky Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in Kamchatka, where there are over 100 active volcanoes. This footage is being managed exclusively by Newsflare. Quake and Volcano Eruption Patterns: Watching New Guinea 12.19.2018

29:20
Hi Team: I am seeing an earthquake/new-volcanic-eruption event pattern supporting my hypothesis that New Guinea is about to be hit by a big earthquake event over the next few days. Open your EQuake3D program and note this 6.3 Quake at the 10-k depth: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us2000isw3/executive This quake struck on December 12, 2018, when the deep-magma-plume-wave action was pushing East through Corridor 2. Then, just today ... https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us2000iuya/executive This 6.2 Quake was triggered by deep-magma-plume-wave action returning from the terminal end back towards the Indonesia-Fiji Seismic-Volcanic where a "convergence event" of all the returning waves come together at the New Guinea location. Then, https://www.sott.net/article/402854-Turrialba-Volcano-erupts-in-Costa-Rica Costa Rica is hit with a volcanic eruption on December 12, 2018, when the magma-plume pressures were moving towards the terminal end position of Corridor 2. https://www.sott.net/article/403092-Mexicos-Popocatepetl-volcano-roars-to-life-with-two-spectacular-eruptions Four days later Mt Popo roars to life with two spectacular eruptions four days later on December 16, 2018, when the magma-pressures are returning to the Origination Zone. We see the same pattern along Corridor 1: https://www.sott.net/article/403108-Volcano-erupts-on-Kuchinoerabu-Island-Japan We appear to be looking at strong evidence to suggest that Quake #4 in the 7-Quake Series will strike near New Guinea like we saw in 2016. The time differential between the third and fourth quake event in that series was 9 days based upon the evidence shared with the Team on December 16, 2018 shown below. This scenario produced a series of 7.9 Papua Quakes in 2016 and the 7.5 Papua Quake from the 2017 Earth orbit cycle, but now the deep-magma-plume formation is much bigger than from two years ago. However, if rising horn formations in the South Pacific are any indication (6.3 and 6.2), then the expected event could be even bigger. Please write and let me know what you think. Blessings, Terral ============= https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_2016 We start this 7-quake series with two events at the backside alignment in Weeks 41 and 42, just like for 2018. We then see the 7.8 Solomon Islands Quake striking on December 8, 2016: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us20007z80/executive#executive This quake would correspond to the 7.1 Sandwich Islands Quake as the third in the seven-quake series for Week 44 of 2016. Then, you see the next event coming in Week 45 with the 7.9 Papua Quake striking on the very last day of the reporting period on December 17, 2018: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us200081v8/executive#executive These two events are separated by 9 days, even though they are recorded in consecutive reporting periods on the 2016 Seismic Chart. Here is the interesting part: M 6.0 - 132km WNW of Arawa, Papua New Guinea 2016-12-10 16:24:34 (UTC) 5.659°S 154.473°E 142.6 km depth https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us20007ztn/executive#executive This 6.0 Papua Quake struck two days after the 7.8 Solomon Islands Quake from above that struck on the 8th. This 6.1 Papua Quake is going to closely mirror this 6.0 Quake coming between the third quake (7.1 Sandwich Islands) and the fourth quake (projected 7.5+ Papua Quake) in the seven-quake series. The third quake struck on December 11, 2018 and adding nine days brings us to about December 20, 2018, which can obviously come later or earlier based upon Deep Magma-Plume Formation Dynamics driving the seismic triggers. If my suspicions are correct, then this could be a really big quake striking the New Guinea region, because of how the Deep Magma Plume Formation has grown, but time will tell. Hopefully, I am wrong, and the dynamic shift reveals a new pattern, but this is what I am seeing today based upon the available evidence in this case.

Breaking News - World's deepest volcanic eruption creates a hellish landscape

01:36
A nightmare garden of lava has been found 14,700 feet (4,500 meters) below the surface of the Pacific Ocean (pictured) Share this article Share 12 shares The world's deepest volcanic eruption has created a hellish 4.5-mile (7km) wide landscape of black glassy tendrils under the sea, scientists have revealed This strange landscape called the Mariana back-arc is where the Pacific tectonic plate subducts beneath the Philippine Sea plate The arc is a zone of seafloor spreading and active volcanism, according to the study published in Frontiers in Earth Science. The volcano was discovered by researchers searching for new hydrothermal vent sites The new lava flows range in thickness between 130 and 450 feet (40-140m). Dr Chadwick said that in the last 30 years, scientists utilising improved technology and exploration methods have detected evidence of about 40 undersea eruptions The new observations showed a rapidly declining hydrothermal system on the lava flows, suggesting the eruption had taken place only months before its discovery the previous year AutoNews- Source:https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-6315941/Worlds-deepest-volcanic-eruption-creates-hellish-landscape-black-glassy-tendrils.html?ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&ito=1490

Please do not forget to visit the site http://scribol.com Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/Z4nZcg ************************************************************** It’s a clear July day in Hawaii – at least, in the area around Kilauea, one of the most volatile volcanoes on the planet. As a photographer circles the erupting feat of nature in a helicopter, he gazes into its belly – and what he sees almost blows him away. Kilauea can be found along Hawaii’s south shore and represents a fifth of the volcanoes that make up the island state. And it’s pretty old, too, since it’s thought to have originated anywhere from 300,000 to 600,000 years ago. -------------------------------------------------------- ►Article link:https://goo.gl/gocJdK --------------------------------------------------------- What’s more, Kilauea has been erupting continuously for over 30 years. That makes it among the most active volcanoes on Earth – so its name, which translates to “spewing” in the Hawaiian language, is particularly fitting. And while all eruptions of the volcano recorded within nearly the last 200 years mark it out as relatively docile, geological evidence shows that Kilauea was once actually prone to more violent, explosive activity further back in time. Indeed, in 1790 a massive eruption caused the deaths of at least 80 people – or perhaps even hundreds. ************************************************************** ►You can support the channel: PATREON https://goo.gl/KtaKrp ►Image credits: YouTube/Storyful News https://goo.gl/fJrE8B ►web: http://watchjojo.com ► SUBSCRIBE US: https://goo.gl/Z4nZcg *Thank you :Robin Lewis ► Follow Us On Google Plus: https://goo.gl/JYf9Rr ► Like us Our Facebook Page: https://goo.gl/C5Rv92 ► Follow On Twitter: https://goo.gl/PZ2U1R ►For more articles visit: http://scribol.com #watchjojo

CSAV Hawaii: Volcanic Eruption With Aa

02:09
On Kilauea, several aa flows meander along gentle slopes, then cascade down the steep pali. Clinker falls forward, exposing the hot molten interior of the flows; vegetation is buried. Footage shot in 2008 (private property) and in 1992 & 1993 (above Kamoamoa, in HVNP). Video shot & edited by UHH Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV). Why does Hawaiian basalt sometimes produce pahoehoe flows, and other times aa? Please read this pdf article for details on the difference between aa and pahoehoe: http://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/pp1676/pp1676_05.pdf Our main web site: http://www.hilo.hawaii.edu/~csav
