How women and men approach money differently: risk, investment, and return | Sallie Krawcheck

06:51
Women have different financial strategies and insight than men, argues Sallie Krawcheck, the co-founder and CEO of Ellevest, a digital investment platform for women. Female investors have a different sense of why they want to make money, pursue specific goals more readily, and show a unique sense of risk awareness. Krawcheck says it's important for women to play the market and plan financially because there is a real retirement savings crisis in this country which disproportionately affects them. Read more at BigThink.com: https://bigthink.com/videos/sallie-krawcheck-how-women-and-men-approach-money-differently-risk-investment-and-return Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink So if you think about investing today it tends to be all about outperforming the market. It tends to be about making more money and it tends to be about picking and choosing the right stock, the right mutual fund. Mutual fund versus an ETF. The right money manager. And that has worked eh, I was going to say well for the population, but frankly it has worked okay for the population. Why? Because the goal that the industry set itself a long time ago of active management and outperforming the market…well less than one percent, well less than half a percent of money managers outperform the market consistently over any five year period. Okay, so back up. When we did our research with women the concept of “beating the market” fell completely flat. The concept of “winning” fell flat. In fact, even the concept of “making more money” fell pretty flat—sort of surprising to me, it seemed like a pretty good goal. What worked for women were actual goals. So okay, if I’m going to put my money aside and invest my money, I want to be able to in X number of years buy my dream home, have a child, start a business, retire well, take that trip around the world that I wanted to. And so we found that women tend to be more goals-oriented and focused than men. Another finding for us: Men tend to, if you ask them the question about their risk tolerance—which, by the way, the whole industry does—men will answer. By the way, they don’t know what it is. We only ever learn what our risk tolerance is really when we go through downturns. But women we found were, “Oh, oh my gosh. You know what, I’m going to think about that. Let me think about that and I’ll get back to you.” And they never do. It really shuts down the conversation. And so we instead of asking a question we know people don’t have the wherewithal to answer, instead we say “Okay, let us learn about you through taking you through the product and the capability. Tell us what your goals are and then we’ll tell you essentially how much risk you can afford.” So for an example you and I are the same person. We make the same salary. We have the same level of education. We’re the same age. And you don’t have an emergency fund so you don’t have cash set aside for a rainy, rainy day and you want to have a baby in four years. I just need to retire, right. It doesn’t really matter what I think my risk tolerance is. You don’t get a lot of risk. I get plenty of risk. And so we tweaked things like that as well as really – so making it goals based, approaching risk differently, taking into account again that women live longer and salaries peak sooner, forecasting out their life curves. And then the most important change we found is that most people think of and describe women as risk-averse investors. What we found, maybe a subtle point, is women are risk-aware investors. And what they wanted was not hey, explain risk to be in standard deviation and “Let’s really go through that statistical analysis,” but more, “Hold on, how bad can it get?” And so what we would do is we track you, track women to their goal and say in X percent of markets it could be this bad and in Y percent that bad. And if you fall off track, if you fall off track to reach your goal we’ll reach out to you, tell you you’re off track and tell you what you have to do to get back on. Deposit another thousand dollars, retire six months later. So those are a few of the differences, some of which are straightforward (and others of which are more subtle) that we found were barriers to keeping women from investing.

Joe Bae: Investment Approach

01:45
My Perspective: Investment Approach Joe Bae: When we look at a company, I think one of the hallmarks of KKR is the depth and rigor in which we analyze businesses and industries and it's that ability to really understand the nuances in a company, the nuances in an industry, and understand business strategy over a long period of time -- which we bring to bear on every one of our investment decisions. In every investment we make, as part of our investment thesis or analysis in due diligence of a company, we try to underwrite -- specifically, what are the things, as owners of this business, that we think we can improve. These are not necessarily short term changes, but longer term initiatives where, if we get one or two things right, we could really improve the fundamental value for shareholders in a company, the company's cost positioning, its competitive advantage in the marketplace, and that starts with our initial 100-Day Plan, where we try to assimilate all the due diligence we've done over an extensive period of time into a core set of key action items and operational value drivers in a business. At the heart of it, I think, private equity in what KKR specifically does well is we take a very long-term perspective, in terms of how we work with companies. We have a very active form of governance. We're not passive investors in businesses. We're constantly looking for ways in which we can work with management to drive operational improvement, to drive growth in companies, to prove return on capital in businesses -- and taking a long-term perspective to do that. More recently, I think, some of the biggest contributions we're making are around stakeholder management issues in these companies, which -- again -- over a long period of time, help to differentiate and drive value in the businesses that we own.

Session 11 (MBA): Cost of Capital & First Steps on Investment Analysis

01:27:07
We started the class by completing the last pieces of the cost of capital puzzle: coming up with market values for equity (easy for a publicly traded company) and debt (more difficult). We then began our discussion of returns by emphasizing that the bottom line in corporate finance is cash flows, not earnings, that we care about when those cash flows occur and that we try to bring in all side costs and benefits into those cash flows. Defining investments broadly to include everything from acquisitions to big infrastructure investments to changing inventory policy, we set the table for investment analysis by setting up the Rio Disney investment. We will return to flesh out the details in the next session (after the break). Approach to investment management

07:40
St. James's Place Wealth Management recognises that no single investment house has a monopoly on investment expertise, and we do not employ in-house investment managers. Instead we carefully select a number of external managers of outstanding ability to manage our range of funds. This has a number of advantages: It gives us the freedom to select first-class managers from the global investment market to manage our funds on behalf of our clients It enables us to change any of these managers at short notice if we have lost confidence in them, without any charges, or tax, or inconvenience to our clients It offers our clients a real opportunity to diversify their investments by spreading their money across funds managed by different managers with different styles https://www.sjp.co.uk/our-investment-approach/investment-management-approach

Investment Strategies as Bitcoin Approaches $6,000

02:10
It’s https://www.investdiva.com/ ‘s Kiana with News BTC and here is your cryptocurrency update. Bitcoin appears to be perfectly approaching the $6,000 support level from back in February. With this, it is obvious that the market sentiment is getting a bit gloomy, and the doomsday analysts are crowding the media. But of course, there are also alternative strategies to profit from the crash. One classic strategy for those who believe cryptocurrencies are here to stay is to buy the dip. If Bitcoin breaks below the $6,000 support level in April, we could even see further drops towards the next support levels at $4,922, and $3,482. You must keep in mind that it took Bitcoin a very short amount of time to break above all these levels to reach the all-time high last year. The golden rule of any financial market is that what goes up, must come down, and Bitcoin is not an exception. Of course, those who bought the digital currency at the highs must be feeling a bit down at the moment. Pun intended. Here, another golden investment saying comes into play: patience is a profitable virtue. And that good things come to those who wait. Some analysts are suggesting shorting Bitcoin as an alternative strategy. To me, this would be as risky as buying it at an all-time high level. Thanks for watching, invest responsibly, and I’ll see you with more updates tomorrow.
